↩️ Thank You. That's a start. "registerProtocolHandler"= major important to give the user a convenient feeling with independent protocols. E.g. for indieAuth or a "toot"-button you do not need to enter your url again and again. It's in the browser. Major problem is visibility (1/2)

Currently going through review with Facebook again to get Micro.blog re-approved to post to Facebook pages. I know Bridgy has already given up on Facebook and I think I may need to also... Anyone have thoughts? It's frustrating to keep going through this every year with a company who doesn't care about their API.

[snarfed]
pages seem like a very minority use case. how many m.b users use a page to interact on FB? 1%? maybe not worth it?
#
[snarfed]
maybe worth it if you really want non-people (companies, orgs, etc) to use m.b effectively and syndicate. otherwise...meh
#
[manton]
Thanks. Yeah, it's not many people but I do hear from some of them when it stops working. Feels like more trouble than it's worth at this point.
#
[snarfed]
[jgmac1106] great!
#
jgmac1106
yeah and pages are so downplayed in the timeline algorithims most companies have stopped updating…never knwo if pages in favor or out of favor
#
jgmac1106
i feel for you. Your micro.blog feed is just a stream of feature requests
#
[manton]
Heh. I like feature requests! What I don't like is trying to explain to a reviewer at Facebook how Micro.blog works and why it's useful to post to a blog. 🙂
#
[manton]
I may try one more time and then I'll follow [snarfed]'s lead and let it go.
#
GWG
[manton]: I still am looking for a feature to POSSE to Micro.blog explicitly, rather than using a jsonfeed or RSS feed
#
jgmac1106
you need to write a micropub solution in WP GWG correct?
#
[manton]
You can use Micropub but I think the missing piece that @GWG needs it to be able to get the Micro.blog permalink for a post in the timeline via the API.
#
petermolnar
[manton]: which one is "simpler" to get approved for on FB - PESOS or POSSE?
#
petermolnar
because while POSSE should be the way, if it doesn't work, there could at least still be a PESOS pull in
#
jgmac1106
Yeah I syndicate anything with #mb to micro.blog but then forget it doesn’t show in main timeline, does it.
#
[manton]
[petermolnar_] Good question, I haven't looked much at PESOS and Facebook. That is probably easier to get approved, though... It's making new posts that they have really locked down.
#
jgmac1106
petermolnar not sure you can download the json any scheduled way…it’s the entire thing. cleverdevil did it well with his wife’s ditchbook
#
petermolnar
that is archive export; PESOS would be "read my own content" from an application
#
jgmac1106
and instagram..so not sure abotu facebook, decided you don’t own the comments on your post, so the backfeed of that is tough

"you don’t own the comments on your post" - well, this is one of the tricky topics even in indieweb circles; I tend to agree with it. What you do own is the notification you got, and nobody should say a word if you only link to the comments in my opinion.
krychu joined the channel
#

!tell petermolnar had random thought about webmentions and privacy in terms of physical analogy. If you mail be back an RSVP I get to keep the response, same for a reply to a letter.
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
#
sknebel
keep yes, publish not generally
#
jgmac1106
interesting, wonder if privacy laws are histroically different there…I really have no idea about the laws on publishing correspondence in US
#
aaronpk
also there generally isn't enough content in an RSVP to be considered an original work with copyright
#
sknebel
(even if publishing is not illegal, the expectation of a reply to a letter is probably that it's kept private unless explicitly stated otherwise. of course, a letter is not made public while being sent, while a reply post typically is)

no lie I was wondering what would it take to make a 'replacement' for Facebook pages in the indieweb fashion
#

like I want to bring something to market that 1) works, 2) sustainably allows a company/SMB to do stuff and 3) works with the indieweb
#

Facebook Pages are _really_ only usable for businesses that push ads or want DDoS-prevention when they handle support/questions
#
aaronpk
we used to call that building a website
#
jacky
that's silly lol
#

i guess the question is what do businesses actually want from facebook pages?

I could imagine a tool that describes itself as a great way to build both a Facebook and web presence... It helps you create a Facebook page but behind-the-scenes maintains a web site and always links people out to it. (But how to reach people who just go straight to Facebook and don't think they need anything else?)

Hello
#
[pawel_madej]
Which microformats validator do you use recommend? I Used indiewebify.me but there is everything ok a but Google does not see any structured data
#
KartikPrabhu
[pawel_madej]: I don't think Google shows microformats in its structured data tool afaik
#
aaronpk
google looks only for specific microformats, and their validator will tell you whether they find them and what is missing
#
[pawel_madej]
Some time ago i think it showed me something
#
KartikPrabhu
aaronpk: does Google use any mf2? or is it some mf1
#
[pawel_madej]
It finds nothing at all now after i removed json-ld and kept microformats
#
aaronpk
i don't think there is a definitive answer
#
aaronpk
but most of their documentation is about mf1
#
[pawel_madej]
So it seems better to have this json-ld generated
#
aaronpk
if you're willing to maintain it, and if all you care about is whether google can parse it, then sure
#
[pawel_madej]
Well this will be auto generated via liquid template when jekyll will build rest of site So no additional work for me
#
aaronpk
maintaining templates is still maintenance
#
[pawel_madej]
Sure but when it is done once it works. Until you do not want to tweak it once more 😉
#
jacky
nah maintaining templates is so much work

composition sounds nice and is nice when it works
