Okay, this is extremely messy, but I'm uploading data from Google Location history circa 2013 into Compass
#
GWG_
And it is taking a few minutes per day
uniquerockrz joined the channel
#
jacky
oh man
#
jacky
that sounds like fun and also hell
#
GWG_
If it continues at this pace, it is going to take about 18 hours a year.
#
jacky
wait are you polling against their API?
#
jacky
hm so using the exported info, I figure?
#
GWG_
It's just reading the export file.
#
jacky
what is compass
#
Loqi
Compass is a location tracking server, part of the p3k set of applications https://indieweb.org/Compass
#
GWG_
I needed to up the maximum memory used by a PHP script temporarily to load a 660mb file into memory.
#
GWG_
It is reading entry by entry, converting to geojson, then saving it
#
jacky
sheeeesh
#
jacky
I'd wonder if you could split up that file somehow
#
jacky
like into each individual entry
#
jacky
and then let it fire off based on each entry just to speed it up
#
GWG_
jacky: I thought about it.
#
GWG_
But I only have to do this once.
#
GWG_
So why optimize
#
jacky
to get it over with :)
#
jacky
18 hours a year is a lot of time
#
jacky
you got 90 hours to let it run
#
jacky
unless it's on a remote machine
#
jacky
and it'd be a bit easier to recover from if it fails
#
GWG_
If it fails, I figure then I'll split it.
#
jacky
gotcha
#
GWG_
I leave for Berlin on Thursday
#
jacky
oh you got time then
#
GWG_
Google stored 823 data points when my phone didn't move for a day.

My April 2013 was pretty boring

I have another year before I attended my first Indiewebcamp

#
jacky
patching my site to allow for an external indieauth provider and consumer is going to be a trip
#
jacky
the upside is that I can delete a lot of code
#
jacky
the downside is that I have to add more tests lol

i've gotta teach loqi how to preview youtube URLs
#
[LewisCowles]
!tell tantek maybe youtube puUPpVrIRkc adaptive loading would help you reduce site-load
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
#
aaronpk
whoa, github added a new "autolink references" section for repos
#
aaronpk
looks like it's made mostly to match JIRA tickets though
#
aaronpk
you can enter a prefix, where any string matching that prefix followed by a number will autolink to a URL pattern you specify
#
aaronpk
oh maybe this isn't new? I only see it on a private repo but not a public one
uniquerockrz joined the channel
#
jacky
I've been seeing that a bit too
#
jacky
you might be in their new testing bucket
#
[LewisCowles]
I've been very impressed with them for a while, but yeah lately GH is levelling up in ways I don't think I'd have expected. Main concern for me is that it doesn't get too bloated with features though
#
aaronpk
heh I already un-check "wiki", "projects" and now "actions" on each repo I create to avoid the tab clutter at the top of the repo

This new "pushed authorization request" spec in OAuth would solve some of our issues in IndieAuth quite nicely

Also would solve mastodon’s weird thing where they register a client and then delete it

Okay, nine hours later, and my slow and dirty code has added all my locations from March to September 2013.
#
aaronpk
Awesome
#
GWG_
I probably could have made it run faster, but I only have to do this once, I hope.

👍 how many events was it?
uniquerockrz and [mapkyca] joined the channel
#
GWG_
Events?
#
[LewisCowles]
how many locations. I called them events because it's a location at a time -> lewis brain -> point in time -> events
#
[jgmac1106]
Gwg you know how Android displays ambient songs being played on locked screen? You know how to get that data?
#
GWG_
Not off hand

Congratulations on the Conpass export! Can't wait to watch your Berlin intro and demoa

I've been chatting with a few of the Inoreader (feed reader) devs about Indieweb. They're interested in getting titleless posts (microblog sort of content) into their reader. They may pop up in chat with questions about microformats/h-feed and standards. Be sure to say hi when they stop by.
#
GWG_
[jgmac1106]: I need some good retropost ideas
#
chrisaldrich
what is retropost?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "retropost" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "retropost is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
GWG_
I don't know how to best define it
uniquerockrz joined the channel
#
GWG_
I would set the publish date in the past
#
chrisaldrich
So something like the idea of a latergram, but putting the publish date as the date/timestamp the photo was taken rather than when it was posted?
#
GWG_
I did a trip to London in June of 2015 and didn't post much about it but I took a lot of pictures
#
GWG_
I did the Israel trip in June of 2015.
#
GWG_
I was in Belfast in a hurricane in October 2014
#
GWG_
So lots of opportunities
#
GWG_
I would then do a current post linking to the set.
#
GWG_
If my site is my life, it should be in order
#
chrisaldrich
wishes my life were in order... :)
#
chrisaldrich
I've often gone back and put what I would consider to be the correct date/time stamps on items based on when they happened in the past. If it's a big enough thing I might create a current post indicating where to find the "new" stuff from the past.

In thinking about it there's a lot of stuff I post privately to my back end in real time and then later come back to make public after-the-fact while keeping the original date/time.

#
jacky
nah I'm linked too
#
jacky
I forget exactly how it works
#
jacky
oh your link doesn't seem to point to a page, maxwelljoslyn
#
jacky
like it's red on the Wiki
#

Ooh, it's working now! :^)
