I have a question... so I'm using indiewebcamp.slack.com to chat, and I was here a bunch yesterday. on desktop, I can see all that chat history, but on mobile, I see my message from yesterday at 3:48 pm, and then the very next message is from today 5:51 am. all the messages in between are not showing up. any ideas why that would be?
#
[dmitshur]
this is what Slack on mobile shows http://instantshare.win/1qosjuzybka7c.png
#
[dmitshur]
is it a bug in Slack? or maybe elsewhere? I've never seen such inconsistency in Slack so this is pretty surprising to me.
#
aaronpk
I can't think what else it could be other than a slack bug, considering that's not what i see in slack
#
aaronpk
I'd just restart slack, it doesn't surprise me that much

[dmitshur]
restarting the mobile app didn't help; let me try signing out and back in
#
[dmitshur]
woot, that fixed it. odd. first sync bug in Slack I'm seeing after being a heavy user since its early days.
#
[dmitshur]
that reminds me, I can't wait for the year when we rename the indiewebcamp.slack.com workspace to just indieweb.slack.com 😛
#
aaronpk
Oh yeah is there any reason not to? I can't remember
#
[dmitshur]
I can't think of any reason no to, other than there may be unknown unexpected issues. but only one way to find out 😄
#
aaronpk
Biggest thing is do they redirect the old url?
#
[dmitshur]
and there's gonna be some work to update all the places that still say IndieWebCamp. e.g. https://chat.indieweb.org/slack heading and page title.
#
[dmitshur]
good question. I can test on a workspace I don't care about
#
[dmitshur]
(or we can find documentation)
#
[dmitshur]
> *When you change your workspace URL:* Slack will automatically redirect the old address to the new one. However, your former URL will become available to register by another group. Once claimed, your old URL will no longer redirect.
#
aaronpk
So I could register a new one with the old name to reverse squat it
#
[dmitshur]
yep. but then it'll become a separate instance (which you may want to maintain, or at least to have some sort of redirect notice on).
#
[dmitshur]
but given no one has taken indieweb.slack.com by now, maybe no one will take indiewebcamp.slack.com either? hard to be sure though.
#
[dmitshur]
I can see redirection works, e.g. http://shurcool.slack.com/ -> takes you to dmitshur.*
#
aaronpk
Hm someone did take it
#
[dmitshur]
> given no one has taken indieweb.slack.com by now,
#
[dmitshur]
wait, is that true? it looks like it exists
#
[dmitshur]
oh no >.< I can only hope it was someone from indieweb trying to save it for our future use
#
[dmitshur]
I'm not finding any way to find out the contact of the admin of an existing workspace... 😞
#
[dmitshur]
oh well. at least we have https://indieweb.org. and I see you updated the workspace name to just IndieWeb, that's already an improvement 🙂
#
[dmitshur]
not to complain, just sharing an observation: https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/ says "9 current issues" at this time.

hi. I'm having trouble with bridgy publishing to twitter, for syndicating a new post. It doesn't work if I have an in-reply-to in the post. The reply is to another website and has nothing to do with twitter - it is not replying to a twitter post. Bridgy says " Could not find a tweet to reply to. Check that your post has an in-reply-to link to a Twitter URL or to an original post that publishes a
#
rivercat
rel-syndication link to Twitter."
#
KartikPrabhu
I think Bridgy only POSSEs replies to twitter posts
#
rivercat
no, it works fine if there is no in-reply-to
#
KartikPrabhu
yes. because then Bridgy does n't think it is reply-post
#
KartikPrabhu
if there is a in-reply-to, then Bridgy thinks it is reply, then if the reply is not to a Twitter post Bridgy does not POSSE it

!tell snarfed looks like Bridgy Publish to GitHub double-encodes escaped markup inside [code] tags, see: https://github.com/indieweb/fragmention/issues/3 vs the original it was POSSEd from. Have you seen this before? should I file an issue?
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next

GWG, didn't I see that you just shipped an update to a plugin yesterday (12/23)? Add it to the Gift Calendar? https://indieweb.org/2019-12-indieweb-gift-calendar

Will do

Webmention is a simple way to notify any URL when you link to it from your site. https://webmention.net/ https://t.co/j3GkKIWjtp

thanks for the report, [tantek]! i looked, and your post and the issue look the same to me, but I'm probably missing something

[snarfed]: [tantek] left you a message 12 hours, 25 minutes ago: looks like Bridgy Publish to GitHub double-encodes escaped markup inside [code] tags, see: https://github.com/indieweb/fragmention/issues/3 vs the original it was POSSEd from. Have you seen this before? should I file an issue?

specifically the line with "requests.post https://api.github.com/repos/indieweb/fragmention/issues" near the beginning
#
[snarfed]
oh nm i see the bad escaping in GitHub now, nm
#
GWG
[snarfed]: That u-mention situation...is that in the Bridgy docs somewhere?
#
[snarfed]
GWG no, it's not really a user visible feature that requires documentation per se
#
[snarfed]
the extra line breaks in edent's comments are a result of his WordPress setup behaving badly and interpreting whitespace in HTML as significant
#
GWG
[snarfed]: I am going to start on a new parser for webmentions in WordPress... what would make sense to do with those hidden links
#
[snarfed]
(without any CSS or other markup indication that it is)
#
[snarfed]
nothing. it's a rendering problem probably, not parsing
#
[snarfed]
find the root cause of the problem first before you try to do something about it 😁
#
[snarfed]
also for the record i vote for finishing the plug-in merge before big new (lower priority) refactorings like a whole new parser, which would be a huge project

If I write a post that references someone's URL but then syndicate it to Twitter via Bridgy, is there any way to rewrite the URL to their Twitter handle, either on Bridgy's end or on my site's markup?

#
sknebel
you can give bridgy a different text version with its special properties
#
sknebel
I'm quite sure bridgy itself does not have such logic (<insert link to snarfed's blogpost on keeping bridgy simple here>)
#
jamietanna[m]
Ooh thanks! I thought there was a way to customise the output but couldn't see it on the FAQs (but was obviously searching for the wrong thing)
#

Also folks who have a staging domain / staging Micropub server, how do you work on it with IndieAuth without setting up i.e. a second silo account for rel=me auth?
#
GWG
jamietanna[m]: I don't use relmeauth. IndieAuth doesn't require it
#
jamietanna[m]
gwg: what do you use as your IndieAuth server? I'm thinking in terms of indielogin.com or indieauth.com as I'm using a static site
#
GWG
jamietanna[m]: I use my WordPress site
#
jamietanna[m]
that's fair!
#
jamietanna[m]
Ooh it looks like it may be possible to use email authN so that could work 👍️
#
GWG
jamietanna[m]: Just, if you are testing, you might be able to put together a very simple password auth.
#
jamietanna[m]
I'm trying to avoid writing stuff if possible - the thing I want to test on staging is my Micropub server, although at some point soon I'll have an IndieAuth server to put in staging too
#
aaronpk
email and pgp keys are my go-to when i'm testing other domains and using indielogin.com

Nice email worked awesomely 👍️ Got my staging static site set up (with a handy way to test the Micropub server) now I just need to make my Micropub server have a stubbed version - that'll likely be Friday's job as tomorrow and Thursday are busy with Xmas things
