snarfed I also seem to be having issues getting the OAuth client credentials working, even though they're in `meetup_client_id` and `meetup_client_secret`, OAuth-dropins still isn't happy and can't see them - anything you've encountered before?

^ found it, looks liek it was looking for `_local`

snarfed: I've got https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy/pull/906/files running locally but unfortunately can't test syndication from local (unless you've got any workarounds?)

jamuetanna cool! why can't you test syndication from localhost?

[tantek] [CrowderSoup] I used to work at a startup where we developed a mobile app to connect IoT devices with your own rules. Sort of IFTTT for IoT, aimed at non-developers (don't get me started on all the home assistant open source stuff out there). I had my doubts as well but I soon found out there are some pretty interesting usecases. For instance elderly people who can remotely operate lighting, heat and yes even a teakettle. How about a

deaf person who used our app to blink his lights when someone rang the doorbell. Again, elderly people still living by themselves but they had a networked poweroutlet. This could give someone outside of the house a warning when at 9 AM this poweroutlet hadn't been used yet (coffeemachine or whatever) which might indicate the routine of this person is broken and it might indicate something is wrong at their house.

A lot of stuff might not be useful for us, but there are always other people with disabilities or otherwise for whom tech can be of good use. This doesn't really add to the whole "make a separate network for your devices" discussion but I wanted to give this point of view as well.

[frank] ++ those are good use-cases. Elderly and in general assistive care is an important use-case. Though especially in those cases I'd want something very private to avoid vulnerable populations getting taken advantage of by random IoT service upsell marketing etc.

<[snarfed] "jamuetanna cool! why can't you t"> Snarfed I didn't realise I could. I guess I can indieauth with localhost to connect my meetup account and do it that way?

↩️ I've been re-editing old posts to remove broken images. So I think that's triggered a wave. And your mention on Twitter has also triggered a Webmention :-)

Just published two minimal packages to help building #indieweb applications! A #micropub request parser and a #indieauth middleware! https://hacdias.com/2019/12/31/04/two-packages/

jamietanna you don't need indieauth, right? just run dev_appserver, log into it with your meetup account, and publish a post from your real site like normal
#
[snarfed]
btw bad news is I've been traveling without a computer, and won't be back to one until 1/7, so none of the meetup PRs will get deployed to production until then. sorry!
#
jamietanna[m]
GWG well thanks! Been happy with Brid.gy progress last few days, as well as my own personal bits. But now travelling to a friends for New Year's Eve so won't be able to get more time until tomorrow or Thursday

Snarfed ah fair enough, I've been trying to avoid posting to my live site if possible, but that's a fair shout, I can try that. I guess it's lower priority for me though if you're not gonna be able to get it deployed though, so that's OK 👍🏽 I can wait
#
[snarfed]
oh you don't have to use your live site! if you have a test site on localhost, just add yourself to LOCALHOST_TEST_DOMAINS in util and it will convert your site's URL to localhost when running in dev_appserver
