Tomorrow is the 10-year anniversary of this blog post: https://tantek.com/2011/168/b1/practices-good-open-web-standards-development — I'm considering blogging a "quick" update. Thoughts?

↩️ thanks! And your process is working great. Just merged my first set of webmentions (https://github.com/willnorris/willnorris.com/pull/22). Still need to improve rendering for replies and mentions, but working well: https://willnorris.com/2021/06/mac-and-cheese/#webmentions

What is thermal printing?
#

capjamesg: petermolnar left you a message 9 hours, 50 minutes ago: I have a laptop, which is synced to a home server, which is synced to a rented server in Germany; the servers run FreeBSD on ZFS filesystem, which takes care of the snapshots. Given that most of my life's content - photos, documents, etc - are digital these days, and that once we had been burglered, I don't feel OK without off-site backups.
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "thermal printing" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "thermal printing is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
capjamesg
Thermal printing is a method of printing that uses heat to display text and images on specially-made thermal paper.
#
Loqi
ok, I added "https://nordprojects.co/projects/littleprinters/" to a brand new "See Also" section of /Thermal_printing https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=76100&oldid=76099

Little Printer is a thermal printer developed by Berg London that let you curate publications to print on-demand.
#
Saphire
Oh nice
#
Saphire
Can you make your own printer to opt into it?
#
capjamesg
With the Little Printer? I'm not sure.
#
capjamesg
Some people are building a cloud around it I think: tinyprinter.club
#
capjamesg
Well, not a cloud so much as the infrastructure to revive old Little Printers.

capjamesg: regarding home backups & all, if you ever want to upgrade from a raspi, but you want to keep it physically tiny, there are machines like https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/desktops-and-all-in-ones/thinkcentre/m-series-thin-clients/M600-Thin-/p/11TC1MTM60010KH which used to go for peanuts on ebay

petermolnar I'm using a usb now. My raspberry pi is for the printer at the moment. I don't have any other use cases. I just feel like a usb might not be the most reliable medium in the world.
#
petermolnar
usb is reasonably reliable; I'm using 3 x usb drives in my home "server" 24x7, and so far so good for well over a year now.
#
petermolnar
the only thing to keep in mind with usb devices is their power needs
#
capjamesg
Power needs?
justBull joined the channel
#
petermolnar
yes; usb 2.0 by spec gives you max 500ma; usb 3.0 900ma. Some devices need more, than that, and if they don't get it, either the device or the source can get hurt.
#
doosboox
I've never actually consider the power needs for my thumb drives
#
doosboox
I've just assumed it to be negligible.
#
petermolnar
those usually are
#
petermolnar
but a usb ssd for example is not
#
capjamesg
I am in the same boat doosboox. That's helpful, petermolnar.

I guess the question on my mind is: are there any negative effects to having a regular usb drive plugged into a laptop 24/7?
#
petermolnar
not really, although I'd probably turn off journaling on the filesystem of it
#
capjamesg
The flash drive is ext2 which doesn't have journaling I don't think.
#
petermolnar
ext2 indeed doesn't have journaling
#
capjamesg
petermolnar what's the best way to monitor backups for errors?

I posted this morning about the potential for a Goodreads-like app based on Micro.blog and/or IndieWeb data. We’ve been improving the books support in Micro.blog from Micropub read-of posting, to linking to IndieBookClub for creating new posts, to now having an API for managing bookshelves. It feels like there is another of a foundation to really build something. https://www.manton.org/2021/06/17/building-on-the.html
