Murray[d] I guess it outsources the maintenance of link rot (if I'm understanding it correctly). Rather than link directly to a source, you link to W3ID and they redirect you to the correct URL. If that URL changes, so should their system (I'm not clear on how that part works) so your link still functions correctly.
