[tantek]mro, yup, and there were lots of attempts to make XML it's own" thing" in the early to mid 2000s, XHTML2 etc. It didn't really get much uptake on the web so there's not a lot of incentive to work on it, when it doesn't seem to provide much (if any) marginal benefits
