[tantek] sknebel, "browser layouting performance" is also going to depend a lot on *which* browsers (or rather, how many previous versions) you want to support. like if you only care about all the latest browsers, then grid+subgrid may be worth depending on. otherwise flexbox or even older, floats, etc. layout performance tips vary greatly depending on how good / precise you want things to look in "older" browsers
