[tantek]
interesting, semi-automated POSSE to Threads is being enabled by their new API endpoint
#
[tantek]
cc: [snarfed]
#
[tantek]
this might get me experimenting with manual POSSE to Threads
#
aaronpk
like the old school twitter thingy
#
[tantek]
"All of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again."
#
sknebel
isnt that also the only "automation" instagram offers?
#
[tantek]
wait does it actually offer that including image upload?!?
#
[Al_Abut]
I’ve been manually POSSE to Threads and frustrated with some of the details, like ignoring my customized open graph images.
#
[Al_Abut]
Didn’t put my latest post up because it cropped my picture so much that it was literally just my torso.
#
aaronpk
I didn't know instagram supported that at all
#
[tantek]
sknebel, docs for instagram's cross-posting URL?
#
sknebel
ah ok, no, confused it with something else. I thought that was the hack all these social media scheduling things did, but they dont
#
aaronpk
you _can_ get API access to instagram, you just have to go through a bunch of hoops

right, and the other thing is tools that just "help" you by giving you scheduled notifications to post. I thought they prefilled with an intent like this, but they don't. their "help" is that they put the preplanned text in your clipboard so you can paste it :P
#
gRegor
[Al_Abut], Might try FB's sharing debugger before posting your URL on IG: https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/
#
gRegor
I don't know if IG has one too, but I'd expect it to be similar
#
gRegor
Er, Threads, not IG
#
[Al_Abut]
Thanks, I have and still no dice :/
#
gRegor
Weird. Is it saying it didn't find the og:image? I've run into it auto-selecting odd images (usually the largest) if it didn't find the og tag
#
gRegor
"Invalid content type: Provided og:image URL, https://alabut.com/images/writing/designsprint/photo-sketching-blackandwhite.jpg could not be processed as an image because it has an invalid content type."
#
gRegor
Using the design sprints post permalink
#
gRegor
Ah, og:image url is 404 :)
#
[tantek]
and that 404 was likely returned as text/html which would be ... "an invalid content type"
#
[tantek]
lol "the chaos of the web made elegant"
#
[tantek]
wait is this movie about Facebook? Or Google/G+?
#
[tantek]
looooool "Sharing is caring"
#
[tantek]
oops sorry that was meant for #indieweb-chat 🤦‍♂️

yep, seems like it would be more useful if it told you it couldn't find the image
#
gRegor
But who needs HTTP status codes? haha

Is webmention the best way of calendar syncing in the sense that what is mentioning what?
#
[tantek]
GWG, there are more complex verbs in calendaring than just "mentioning"
#
[tantek]
think about all the things you can do on a calendar, and making those actions into verbs
#
GWG
[tantek]: I know, that's what I was asking.
#
[tantek]
if you want to walk down that path, check out the verbs in CalDAV

Do you think they'd listen to a webmention pitch for this? https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/architecture/blueprints/activity_pub/

Probably not "All communications are basically JSON objects, which web developers are already used to, which simplifies adoption."

[snarfed] I may have picked up a slight error in the Bridgy Fed docs: the instructions for verifying links (https://fed.brid.gy/docs#mastodon-link-verification) say that the `rel=me` link should point to `https://web.brid.gy/r/https://[DOMAIN]/`, but I had to change it to `https://fed.brid.gy/r/https://[DOMAIN]/` to get it to work for me.

[tantek] welcome! and lol, UX is indeed hard. they don't initially show up there any sooner than they did before, only the timestamp itself is different now. but still evidently feels more responsive 😆

[campegg] yeah that's a known issue, and complicated. BG originally put AP actor ids on http://fed.brid.gy. later (last fall), I switched to protocol-specific subdomains like http://web.brid.gy, and changed the docs to use that. but AP actor ids are immutable, so I kept the existing users on http://fed.brid.gy instead, since if their ids changed, they'd have entirely new accounts
#
[campegg]
[snarfed] ah, got it—thanks!

it's an awkward UX wart, I've been reluctant to formalize and document it, but I need to
