Pretty cool, but I have a hard time squaring "Bluesky couldn't start locking off access" and "bsky.app is hardcoded into my script", but I don't have my head totally wrapped around the Bluesky architecture.

Yeah, I don't know what to make of it. I don't post a lot to BlueSky but from this I may investigate the pieces of pulling comments on linked to posts into my site. I already do this in WordPress.
#
[Joe_Crawford]
Also, a follow up from FrESH I've written my first MathML, and I have to say that syntax is very specific. https://codepen.io/artlung/pen/vYwojwL

jimwins if you want Bluesky comments without the dependency on http://bsky.app etc, feel free to try https://brid.gy/

[snarfed] thanks, not really looking to integrate comments from social networks into my own site, just not sure that I buy that outsourcing comments to Bluesky like the example is really safe from shenanigans. But like I said, I'm relatively uncertain about Bluesky architecture and I know they're just ramping up the actual federated-ness of it all, especially compared to Mastodon/ActivityPub.
#
jimwins
(Like for all the people that freak out about their Mastodon content being scraped for search and AI training and there's a lot of handling for defederation, authenticated fetch, etc, Bluesky just has "Relays" out there hoovering up all of the content all of the time?)
#
[snarfed]
it's a complex architecture, it's both more and less decentralized than the fediverse/ActivityPub
#
[snarfed]
they have a good whitepaper on it
#
[snarfed]
but yes, the relays and appviews specifically are more centralized, since they do a number of things that aren't easy (or even necessarily possible) decentralized
#
[snarfed]
wrt comments though, the Bluesky comments thing _is_ integrating comments from a social network 😁
#
jimwins
right, you couldn't quite do the same thing as easily with Mastodon/AP although there's hacks like what jwz does to pull them into his wordpress blog (which is not using WP's AP support itself).
#
[snarfed]
oh you can definitely pull Mastodon comments into your blog w/o centralization
#
[snarfed]
Bridgy does that
#
[snarfed]
the more-centralized architecture parts are needed more for universal aggregation, search, discovery, etc
#
jimwins
right, i guess i just don't think of that sort of system as "decentralized" so much as "re-centralized".
#
[snarfed]
user data is decentralized, identity is very decentralized, both arguably more than the fediverse
#
[snarfed]
worth reading more on!
#
StarrWulfe
I operate my blog as if it's a one-man ActivityPub instance actually. Bridgy handles talking to some of the other networks I don't do natively but it can can be all done with plugins and like snarfed says, it's very decentralized.
#

BTW, still trying to figure out how to get bsky.brid.gy to play nicely with Wordpress AP plugin and Friends [snarfed].
#
StarrWulfe
Big issue now seems to be replies aren't ending up in the feeds for me to see and interact with in Friends...
#
[snarfed]
hmm! which feeds are these? the ones Friends generates?
#
[snarfed]
happy to look at a specific reply if you have an example?
#
StarrWulfe
Let me try and create something on the fly right now while you're here...
#
[snarfed]
we also changed reply delivery recently, fixed https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy-fed/issues/1047 , that may have fixed it
#
Loqi
[preview] [snarfed] #1047 Local reply to bridged account should also be bridged
#
StarrWulfe
(but really, I'm a big edge case, and I'm sure nobody else but me even thinkns about using Wordpress/Bridgy/all/the/things like I do.
#
StarrWulfe
Let me check that issue and see if it fixed it though! BRB
#

Let’s see if I see it in Bsky via the bridge

[preview] [starrwulfe] This is a test note from my blog mainly to test if the Bridgyfed bridge between Bluesky and the AP plugin is two-way or not… this is only a #test. Share on federated SNShttps://starrwulfe.xyz/b/3bVT
#
StarrWulfe
(note the uglified markdownification of that last bit there... not sure how that happened...)
#
StarrWulfe
Ok, let's try a reply to it now...
#
StarrWulfe
wrote a bsky reply at https://bsky.app/profile/starrwulfe.xyz/post/3kwdw6vbjsc2f but don't see that reply coming from out of Bsky back into the fedi... hmmmmmm...
#
StarrWulfe
Friends doesn't like the activityPub feed from https://bsky.brid.gy/ap/did:plc:ke5adm7cnbxc5ek34fsrt5bt for some reason...
#
StarrWulfe
@[snarfed
#
StarrWulfe
@[snarfed] I think what's happening is that the blog never properly "registered" to get replies from the bridge? All my posts seem to go over there but nothing federates back.
#
StarrWulfe
(sorry for typos, new keyboard here)
#
[snarfed]
BF is getting a 500 error from your site when it tries to deliver the reply via AP
#
[snarfed]
I can file an issue
#
[snarfed]
should I file it with the AP plugin? or Friends?
#
StarrWulfe
both. they're complementary of each other and I don't know which one does the heavy lifting between the two
#
StarrWulfe
I don't know which one has the inbox part that isn't responding properly
#
StarrWulfe
I wonder if it still has something to do with the dot in the username issue I thought we cleared up already
#
[snarfed]
I have the stack trace, looks like the AP plugin, I"ll file
#
[snarfed]
which is closed

Thanks! Nah, grab a crowbar and reopen. Do me a favor and send a smiley or something to that thread I created via your @snarfed.org@snarfed.org so I can rule out the dot
#
StarrWulfe
...while I catch up on reading that issue thread here...
#
[snarfed]
are you on the latest AP plugin version?
#
[snarfed]
sent a reply from @snarfed.org@snarfed.org
#
StarrWulfe
got it and replied back. OK looks like there's been a regression maybe?
#
[snarfed]
maybe! I'll post to the issue

what's also strange is that my other AP account isn't seeing the bsky user's response either though.
#
StarrWulfe
@starrwulfe@social.vivaldi.net also should see since it's on the bridge as @starrwulfe.social.vivaldi.net.ap.brid.gy over there and participated in the exchange.
#
StarrWulfe
I can see it on the Bsky side but can't see anything on the AP side coming from @starrwulfe.xyz@bsky.brid.gy showing up in any federated timeline where I know I should see something.
#
[snarfed]
Thread inbox delivery is complicated, but tldr replies don't automatically get delivered to everyone above in the thread. Mastodon does that by @-mentioning in replies and accumulating those @-replies in a "canoe," but that behavior isn't standardized
#
[snarfed]
missing replies is kind of inherent in AP, so much so that they tried to account for it in the spec, https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/#inbox-forwarding , but it's still a problem regardless
#
[snarfed]
you'll probably want to add your WP and plugin versions to https://github.com/Automattic/wordpress-activitypub/issues/571

I try to account for the foolishness by @ mentioning whenever I think about it to be on the safe side usually.
#
StarrWulfe
Here's the strange thing-- I was getting everything my Bsky account posted across the bridge into friends including forwards all the way up to 3 hours ago. So it's kinda perplexing why this one thing would stop all posts from crossing the bridge.
#
StarrWulfe
I got an idea: let me try responding to a post originated by my Bsky account...

started putting a lot of animations on my landing page. I think I find them rather annoying overall. main benefit is that nothing is visible until the document has finished loading, which I found quite frustrating
