[tantek]: @[tantek] I wrote a post critical of Bluesky back in January but didn't cover the public data angle. Is there anything else you remember about the post? I can try and look for it.

Not sure how the "replies" feature interfaces with the bridge but here's the message link for the older message I'm replying to: https://discord.com/channels/866577279223595018/866577430886350869/1352498588462088223

interesting, RSS feed generator that uses CSS selectors: https://github.com/TBosak/mkfd

[preview] [TBosak] mkfd: RSS feed builder created with Bun🥖 and Hono🔥- builds from webpages and/or REST API calls
#
[artlung]1
doesnm — sounds related and apt! And if they’re hosting with GitHub pages makes extra sense. Thanks!

snarfed: i got email spam overnight purporting to be from the author of mkfd 😂

[fluffy]
I got spammed about mkfd this morning too. I wish the docs had literally any information about it other than a bunch of stuff about how “easy” it is to install an entire tool chain to manage its Docker stuff.
#
[fluffy]
And apparently it runs as a fully-fledged web app and who knows what its needs in terms of runtime requirements.
#
[fluffy]
I’m super not interested in checking the project out in its current state.
#
[schmarty]
fluffy: you were kind to investigate it even that closely!!
#
[fluffy]
Give me technical information about how it works and how to use it, instead of a “trust me, bro” on installing a bunch of stuff with a curl|bash
#
[schmarty]
sounds like it might be outright malicious then
#
doesnm
mkfd?
#
[fluffy]
I doubt it’s malicious, just like, it reeks of “modern” web dev, which I am grumpy about.
#
[schmarty]
i dunno. a bunch of email spam asking people to run `curl | bash` sure sounds like an attack vector.
#
[fluffy]
I am not fond of how many projects are frameworks upon frameworks.
#
[fluffy]
The curlbash is for installing https://bun.sh
#
[schmarty]
ahh, ok. not a file directly from the mkfd repo 😅
#
[fluffy]
Right, I should have been more specific
#
[fluffy]
But like. At a glance it seems like using mkfd has larger requirements than just, y’know, generating a feed yourself. And knowing how projects like these tend to be, I’m guessing the feed itself is gonna suck.

Like I’m not sure who this is targeting… someone hand-writing all their HTML but still willing to run a bunch of typescript?
#
[fluffy]
Without more information about what it even does (or how or why) i can only speculate about which “css selectors or rest calls” it’s using and my imagination is lacking regarding why anyone would want to use this.
#
[fluffy]
Never a good sign when one of the TODO list items is “amass contributors”
#
[fluffy]
I hope that’s meant as a joke

One can do worse than be ambitious and vocally earnest, but it's not obvious to me how I would use it vs other tools with longer track records.

does anyone know of a nice introduction to web key directory?
#
[schmarty]
what is web key directory?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "web key directory" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "web key directory is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
What is reach
#
Loqi
reach is usually used to refer to the number or extent of people that see or are at least shown a specific post (of yours) in whatever aggregator or reader app, site, or home (news) feed feature of a silo that they use to view posts https://indieweb.org/reach
#
GuestZero
tantek do you imply wkd isn't viable due to limited adoption? :)
#
[tantek]
No sorry cross talk. That was in ref to the "amass contributors"
#
[tantek]
Never heard of wkd. Looks like there's some incidental material on Wikipedia though https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=web%20key%20directory&sourceid=Mozilla-search&ns0=1

intrusive thought: polyglot HTML/vCard file
#
balintm
likely can't be done in an RFC-compliant way…but maybe feasible if most vCard clients ignore lines they don't understand. sounds like a fun saturday evening hack

I also had an email about mkfd. I feel like I have had those types of "please look at my repository" emails before. Wonder if there is some service for that or something

It seems like a fun idea. It looks to just be about turning web addresses into RSS feeds. Presumably for subscribing to pages that do not have a feed at all.
