Lars-Christian, are you looking for feedback or suggestions on your physical activity charts/graphs?

Sure thing, would much appreciate feedback @[tantek] :D

I have found an RSS feed that doesn’t have a URL. My database and reader relies on linking out to the site.
#
capjamesg
I imposed a unique constraint for the URL column because I thought I’d have a URL for every post.
#
capjamesg
What is the best thing to do? Remove the unique constraint and use another ID?

Thank you @jeremycherfas appreciate it!
#
[artlung]
capjamesg[d] in RSS you ought to be provided a guid field for the purpose. not a url, but a globally unique field.
#
[artlung]
Also, I just read this and was reminded how much software is not really thoughtfully put together. Let people have their last name! https://www.techspot.com/news/106907-people-named-null-punished-computers-weirdest-ways.html
#
Zegnat
Related to Mr Null, who has written for Wired: https://archive.ph/sQoCh
#
[artlung]
hah! the same fellow also cited in the techspot article [Zegnat]
#
Zegnat
Wondering if there is a good way to collect those articles. Maybe on indieweb.org/name
#
[tantek]
Lars-Christian, will do!
#
[tantek]
I got a recent simple chart example from bouldering on my Garmin Connect that also had a red green design and used them both to mean something specific. I'll upload
#
[tantek]
What is null?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "null" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "null is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
^ hey at least that works 😆
#
[tantek]
null is a programming language term and a family name for some people who due to that overlap experience problems with some computer systems; on the indieweb developers should use strings for names and test for "Null" as a valid value.
#
Loqi
ok, I added "https://www.techspot.com/news/106907-people-named-null-punished-computers-weirdest-ways.html" to a brand new "See Also" section of /null https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=100947&oldid=100946

[artlung] I see, I will still try to come to the next FrESH as I want to know more about CSS anyways, thank you!
#
[artlung]
Thanks for reaching out formercanaanite, next meeting is Thursday of next week!
#
[tantek]
What is fresh
#
Loqi
🎨 Front End Study Hall (sometimes abbreviated as FrESH) is an HTML and CSS focused IndieWeb popup meeting focused on markup, styling, design, layout, and accessibility in a loose format where participants come to learn and teach https://indieweb.org/FrESH
#
[tantek]
[artlung] that q re js / react seems like a reasonable question to ask and others might too, worth adding to a new FAQ section on /FrESH ? WDYT?
#
[artlung]
[tantek] working on something like that. that and the "when are these meetings" question are the top Qs I'm adding.

I was playing with using `.tex` for resume generation and it sure feels like it is needlessly inscrutable. multiple temp files generated and and errors not really reported back to me to explain why things didn't work. It really makes me appreciate a print stylesheet and then print -> save as pdf which works fine.
#
[artlung]
I can see `.tex` has some really thoughtful aspects to it though and I almost really like the syntax in the files.
#
[snarfed]
[artlung] welcome to the rabbit hole, you're only about 20y away from getting a check for $1.96 or so from Don Knuth 🤪
#
[artlung]
I think a flamethrower needs to be taken to all the tooling.
#
[artlung]
Compile or tell me the errors, please.
#
[artlung]
Don't litter my directory with mystery files.
#
[artlung]
And I am happy to be Knuthified! 🙂
#
Zegnat
I have had more luck with giving pandoc a style file and some other plain text format to generate PDFs with, then going down the tex stuff
#
jeremycherfas
Zegnat++ Me too. Pandoc and a custom template enables me to give clients the .docx files they cannot live without while having little do do with them myself until they come back for revision.
