Happiness is fixing the annoyance bug when the same file is parsed in the same way for two different layouts and has one tiny difference from exactly the same source and code parsing the array. Moving to `trim` parse that commas out of the string fix the problem.

Just talkin’ bout video pipelines
#
[Al_Abut]
[artlung] interesting stuff. I’ve glued together some Automator scripts on my mac for processing images and hosting on AWS, doing that with video is on my backlog
#
[artlung]
Video infrastructure comes in many forms. A certain admintax always exists. The default is “put it on YouTube, I get upload, transcription, transcoding, a permalink, CDN. I also get silo lock in and moderation oversight. Vimeo same deal. All those parts gotta come from somewhere.
#
[artlung]
I added a reel yesterday and improved my workflow a tiny bit. But it’s still more manual than automated. https://artlung.com/reels/
#
[artlung]
Everything is a process.
#
[Al_Abut]
Beautiful sunset.
#
[Al_Abut]
I wish I could get off youtube embeds but without it, I don’t know how to make posts for RSS feeds where the video actually shows up in feed readers

what is vimeo
#
Loqi
Vimeo is a video hosting silo https://indieweb.org/Vimeo
#
Kolev
I wish I could host large files but I'm on Codeberg Pages
#
gRegor
^ I don't know what the current state is, but as of a few years ago they hiked prices, so may not be as good an option for personal sites.
#
gRegor
Otherwise, I've historically thought they were a pretty great alternative

Vimeo just got bought. Seemed like people don't trust the new owners.
#
[Al_Abut]
Definitely don’t trust the new owners. Bending Spoons is a notorious chop shop.
#
[artlung]
I have some videos I uploaded to Vimeo 15 years ago and as owner and uploader I cannot download the original files.
#
[Al_Abut]
That sucks so hard
#
[Al_Abut]
Yeah, any media I upload now is duplicated locally, I’ve learned the hard way too.
#
gRegor
Was just reading in the See Also section how they hold them hostage if you don't keep up a paid plan. Bad behavior!
#
[artlung]
It may be a weird oversight as of this moment, but nonetheless, it's telling of priorities.
#
gRegor
Feel free to add any criticisms you've written on your site!
#
[artlung]
I'm adding a todo for myself to reach out to support.
#
gRegor
> "For those not following: if you upload videos to vimeo when you're on a pro or plus account and then step down to a free account you can't access your older videos anymore. It's like a hostage situation and you're forced to pay up."
#
[tantek]
sad about Vimeo. even "friendly" silos are vulnerable to this sort of thing
#
gRegor
I'll bump that up in the criticisms section
#
[artlung]
It's possible preventing download was a measure they took against traffic scrapers and logged-in user (me!) are also affected.
#
[Al_Abut]
It’s super sad. Bending Spoons has no regard for community. They gutted Komoot, a popular cycling app in Europe.
#
[artlung]
I was never a paid member, but I feel like I remember when I *could* download.
#
[Al_Abut]
I’m on tenterhooks that someone will do that to my beloved ridewithgps because it’s the closest to a good actor left in the biking world
#
[Al_Abut]
Speaking of video, for short form vertical video I just started playing with Loops, an activitypub-enabled app from the creator of Pixelfed.
#
[Al_Abut]
Here’s my first quick test of a recent clip of rain here in SD, would love to know if it loads ok for others or if it has some of the same hiccups I’ve seen with Pixelfed: https://loops.video/v/b72FY3ZT2d
#
[Al_Abut]
If it does, I might PESOS through them just to pipe back the optimized video, because yes dealing with it locally really is that much harder and annoying than images
#
gRegor
[artlung], interested to see what you hear back, feel free to update https://indieweb.org/Vimeo#Lock-in_if_you_do_not_keep_a_paid_account, including that subheading if it's too long :)

I was able to download my video on Vimeo last week. But, 3rd party video downloaders still work.
#
[social]
The embed I had for my video stopped functioning a couple years ago. I’ve thought about remakng the video.
#
Kolev
Maybe I need a special sybdomain for big files
#
[social]
[artlung] The download option looks like it still is there, but moved behind the 3 vertical dots in the heading area next to “Share”
#
[artlung]
I stand utterly corrected. It was very hidden on a page with many many other edit and modification and manipulation options. Thanks! [social]++

Download isn’t where it used to be.
#
[tantek]
opportunity for a bookmarklet to trigger a download of the current video?
#
[artlung]
Even more, on the edit page, there's a "Viewer permissions" subsection with a "Downloads" subhed and a purple flag saying "upgrade" next to a grayed out round slider.

Does anyone know or have made a audio portfolio website? such as for a small time producer or musician?
#
[morganm]
Tantek insisted It was good to dicuss the general project here-- Im really going to see if I can interview and show a bunch of sample websites to really gauge how much I can bite off to chew, the client (my friend, a small producer in New Zealand) has little tech expertise and just knows he "doesnt want to use squarespace" and the maintainability is a real question
#
[tantek]
We don't often talk about the particular IndieWeb dev challenges of making indieweb sites for others, especially friends and family, and I do think it's an interesting aspect worth discussing here.
#
[tantek]
some amount of indieweb dev tech support duties
#
[morganm]
Ive gone a long break of not doing any extra work projects (except that tiny WSG demo website Ive shown a few times) so Im feeling ready to take on an audio focused project
#
[morganm]
But yeah managing expectations, that sort of thing is a thing
#
[artlung]
there's a specialized SSG just for a music site which may be... related or inspire. or irritate. Faircamp.

Faircamp looks potentially exactly what might be a good fit for him, and I can customize it a little or add some flair I imagine. Also I need to scour more related to this space and whats out there 🙂 . Im gonna link him faircamp right away though and see what his reaction is

hmmm, to be blunt, a site that claims that they built their tool to "make it accessible" that doesn't even have basic focus indicators is not one whose claims I trust
#
[Murray]
though I will say it was one of the least irritating versions of smooth scrolling that I've used 😄 (even if some of the animations feel a little broken on Firefox)

Documenting some notes from today’s jam session over zoom:
#
[Al_Abut]
• Uploaded short form vertical video to youtube, which automatically gave it the “Shorts” interface.
#
[Al_Abut]
• Right click or ctrl click to get the hidden embed code.
#
[Al_Abut]
• The embed is presumably RSS-friendly compared to a straight <video> tag but surprise! It breaks on mobile.
#
[Al_Abut]
• Shorts interface is annoying on the youtube main site but the embed is remarkably restrained.
#
[Al_Abut]
• Added a little bit of CSS to get it to work on mobile and also cleaned up the desktop view by shrinking the height while adding sidebars.
#
[Al_Abut]
• Test page is here:
#
[artlung]
yeah, mixed bag.

[Murray] yeah losing the hand to indicate clickability is a big no-no
#
[artlung]
(on desktop for sure)
#
[Murray]
I was more talking about keyboard control. I wanted to see how the scroll reacted to being jumped around the page, and honestly, it worked well, but I quickly lost track of where I was because they've removed all outlines and not bothered to replace them with anything 😅 but yeah, mouse issues too...
#
[artlung]
I ought to have added a "yes and" to your initial criticism
#
[Murray]
I'll grant that these are no necessarily issues with the library itself, but if you're claiming that you've considered accessibility, I do expect bare-minimim conformance on your product page
#
[artlung]
100% agree with that
#
[Murray]
ah fair, yeah, a good thing to note as well 🙂
