I'm pretty upset at the current state of marketing around VPNs
#
[morganm]
It makes total sense and I could probably figure out in a few hours how to setup a VPN and use it self hosted wise, but what confuses me and seems somehow like almost guaranteed to be misleading or have drawbacks are these marketing claims about the various providers and what they do
#
[morganm]
My instincts tell me trying to use a location vpn service will basically trip you up into a lot of extra captcha checks and auth and verification steps and do little to anonymize
#
[morganm]
Probably a self hosted VPN if you tried to use it with AWS or something, to access the web would get flagged a lot
#
[morganm]
what is self hosted
#
Loqi
self hosting is the practice of running the software for your personal website on hardware under your own physical control, typically on a home server, or sometimes refers to only the aspect of running web applications on a (possibly virtual or shared) server under your control but not necessarily in your home https://indieweb.org/self-hosted
#
[morganm]
Im using the term semi correctly it seems, yeah like other computers just under your control (somewhat)

I run tailscale now and route all my traffic through my home internet when I travel. I previously used wireguard (which is what tailscale is under the hood) but tailscale just makes it so easy
#
[morganm]
Ive used that in work contexts, Ill take another look at it for home use potentially

the #1 reason I have a VPN is to route traffic outside of my country, so I feel like self hosting just isn't an option 😄

so https://pcarrier.com loads to the middle of page unless JS is turned off. there is almost no JS on the page, only in iframes. can iframs affect outer scrolling? o_O
