[artlung] on Mac I’ve used Smart JSON Editor app in the past.

Nova IDE from Panic has a couple plug-ins I’ve used to work with PHP development.

Thanks [social] - not precisely what I was looking for but I appreciate the reply. What I'm looking for is a PHP library that handles JSON feeds - loading, caching, iterating over their elements, etc, so I can use it to call feeds then interact with the results programmatically. I think you're more describing user-focused software that can handle JSON at large.

hmmm, PHP has native `json_decode()` which would handle the parsing of the data into native PHP array data.

I couldn’t stop tinkering with my prototype from this weekend’s IWC, my photo gallery now has proper layouts for desktop and mobile:

Looks great on my mobile [Al_Abut] Are you caching? Quite slow to load. Mind you, I am on a moving train.
#
[artlung]
[Trevor_Morris] yes, this is what I fell back on. The niceties I was hoping for from a feedreader library were: cache handling and expiry, iteration through items with getters and setters, setting of user agent if needed, etc.

Are there many feed-reader libraries? And/or do they support JSON feeds. I'd assume most focus on XML.
#
[artlung]
there are a few yes. I am using the antique (but it fricking works) simplepie. `composer require simplepie/simplepie`

[jeremycherfas] sorry about that, the problem is on my end. I just realized that it’s not particularly optimized for mobile beyond the layout itself. I’m not caching because I didn’t know if I could while still serving images directly from Pixelfed? Their API is undocumented and I’m guessing in the dark but I’m going to keep investigating for a bit now.
#
[Al_Abut]
I have a lot to learn about using APIs. This is like my second time.
#
[jeremycherfas]
Wasn’t really a complaint and I hope it didn’t come across as one.
#
[Al_Abut]
Not at all!

You’re one ahead of me!

Super valuable feedback, the kind that made me slap my forehead (in a good way)

I’ve spent a couple of hours on my journey home trying to wrap my head around Docker.
#
[Al_Abut]
Oof, good man. I have yet to cross that bridge.
#
[Al_Abut]
I was jealous of [Jo]’s fun tinkering this weekend
#
[jeremycherfas]
I dunno. Seems awfully complex. Like that xkcd about how much time you save compared to how long it takes you to get automation working.
#
[Al_Abut]
Haha
#
[Al_Abut]
I try to reframe it as learning vs doing but it depends on how impatient or pressed for outcomes I am
#
[jeremycherfas]
Learning all the way down.
#
[Al_Abut]
E.g. this was a useful prod to learn about how I can explore APIs that don’t have documentation. I just learned that there are indeed preview thumbnails that I should be using instead of the full res, and even blurred versions for the loading placeholders before that.

I have run Docker desktop for years on Mac, but occasionally (about twice a year) decides Docker and Mac seem to believe they are in alternate timelines and just don’t believe in each other.

@tantek I honestly appreciate your thoughts on this, but I don't know where this leaves me and any other non-coders trying to be a part of this community when we're simply using the tools we have the knowledge to use. I have no problem removing analytics, but it doesn't change the fact that the way WordPress sites (to the best of my knowledge) operate, they have ot have the gdpr options. Please correct me if this is wrong. When

your quote from #indieweb "I have deep sympathy for anyone who is just using a framework or template or some other "bootstrap" (so to speak) thing which does all this auto-cookie stuff by default." ---- so where does that leave people like me? Is there room or even a desire to have people like me who rely on the tools we have the knowledge to use? And what about people who have less knowledge than me ?(I'm comfortable with word

If you have a personal website, you are a member of the indie web community. You don't need to use a particular tool.

I apologise for the discourse going on in #indieweb. I think it all got conflated because someone came in trying to promote a commercial website then emotions flared.
#
capjamesg
This is maybe the first time this year someone has tried to promote a commercial site here so the wider community isn't as calibrated on how to respond to that.
#
cupparex
I can understand how that happened. I piggybacked on that conversation because I wanted to understand the group better.
#
capjamesg
We do have a bit of a coding bias in the community because many community members write code, but making sure we don't gloss over how challenging many things can be is something I hope all of us continue to work on because the web is -- and I think we all know this in our hearts -- for everyone.
#

Certainly things like cookie management are non-trivial.
#

I can tell you that going through onboarding has been insanely difficult for me. One of the things I had been planning to do was to blog about my experience and how I am impleted it so that maybe it's easier for the next person using wordpress (I can't speak to the other types of sites) I know a little html, a little css, a little this and that (just this week did helllo, world with java) but I have had to work really hard t
#
[tantek]
cupparex, what capjamesg said, if you've got a personal website, regardless of the CMS, service, "stack" it's built on, you're welcome here
#
[tantek]
the thing to do about WordPress is file a bug on WordPress that WordPress MUST NOT create a cookie on the user's browser if all they do is visit the site and scroll or click around and browser posts for example.
#
[tantek]
like you don't have to accept a cookie to read the RSS of a website, so why should you have to accept a cookie to read the HTML?
#
livebay
CuppaRex[d]: that actually sounds pretty cool. but still i recommend you could step outside of IndieWeb to feel the broader indie web some time. people and groups have much different approaches and ethos.
#
[tantek]
all the GDPR / Cookie Banner horrible UI is downstream of frankly bad/sloppy tools/services that request a cookie from a user immediately

[tantek]: well i know my setting is to allow people to not make a choice and they'r free to scroll, but i don't knwo what wordpress actually does --- i jsut don't have that knowledge to understand that yet.
#
capjamesg
Yeah! It's definitely okay to make changes if/when you want! Ultimately it's your website ✨
#
[tantek]
cupparex, you're right, WordPress makes this opaque unfortunately to the person using WordPress. This got worse I believe when WordPress started requiring scripting.
#
[tantek]
ideally as you say, users of WordPress would not need "that knowledge to understand that"
#
cupparex
[tantek]: I totally agree. When it started being required I hated it as a site owner and not thirlled about it as a user, but i also didn't want to have legal trouble 🙂
#
[tantek]
there is also ClassicPress that a bunch of folks switched over to
#
[tantek]
does anyone know if ClassicPress requires creating a cookie simply for loading / viewing the home page or a blog post?
#
cupparex
capjamesg[d]: I'm def. opening to learning more as time goes on.
#
[tantek]
what is ClassicPress?
#
Loqi
ClassicPress is a community fork of WordPress that emerged due to resistance to the introduction of the Gutenberg visual editor https://indieweb.org/ClassicPress
#
[tantek]
cupparex ^ maybe worth exploring to see if it fits your needs
#
cupparex
[tantek]: Thanks for sharing that. I don't have the ability to switch from wordpress right now, but open to learning about other options going forward.
#
cupparex
I'm putting that in my bookmarks so I can learn about it. thanks for sharing that
#
[tantek]

[tantek]: Thanks. I do keep an eye on that channel. It's not very active, but I'm hoping to be able to take everything I'm learning in this process and make it easier on the next person. I'm just really glad I didn't have to learn how to use wordpress at the same time. lol

livebay[d]: I'm def. open to venturing out and exploring. I'm only a week in from learning the term indie web. I actually found it through Chris Aldrich's site because I was learning about Zettelkasten. This community and the indieweb tools were the missing piece for me to do what I wanted to for my blog that has my name as the domain.

I don't believe WordPress core sets a cookie unless you're signing in to the admin, or you are a public visitor leaving a comment: https://developer.wordpress.org/advanced-administration/wordpress/cookies/
#
gRegor
Third-party plugins may set cookies in addition, of course
#
gRegor
GWG is on ClassicPress I think and only cookie I'm seeing set is probably also a third party analytics, koko analytics. So ClassicPress core is probably similar to WP on cookies.

I was reading the page you linked to in #indieweb and there is some language and uncertainty here "Strictly read, "no connection" could potentially mean that the GDPR is applicable to a personal website as soon as it has any connection to a professional or commercial activity, hence not only applying to commercial aspects but e.g. to a web professional discussing web technology on their perso
