I will continue to learn about this. In the spirit of this community I have decided to remove the google analytics i added a couple days ago (was planning to track where my traffic was coming from as a habit from having an internet marketing background). I think for this site I will let go of that tool and judge my reach based on engagement and natural interaction, and concentrate more on writing. At some point I will list my

what is analytics
#
Loqi
analytics is the collection, analysis and reporting of a websites traffic https://indieweb.org/analytics
#
gRegor
Whatever you're comfortable with really. I don't think removing analytics in particular is a key part of the indieweb. There's various reasons people may choose different analytics options, or to not have them.

Another view of analytics is that like anything indieweb, ask yourself what specifically are you getting out of putting something on your personal site? if you're not sure what you're getting out of it, remove it. the simpler a personal site, the better. less admintax, better for the users/viewers/environment etc.
#
[tantek]
or consider, do server logs alone give you "enough" analytics that you don't need script based analytics?
#
cupparex
gRegor: I appreciate you pointing me in the direction of the Gdpr and analytics pages so I can make a fully informed decision and for doing those tests. eRegor++

[tantek]: My main reason is I want to see where traffic is coming from and what posts are being interacted with the most. I wanted to use traffic as a way to figure out what places are worth my time when implementing POSSE
#
[tantek]
server logs would seem to be sufficient for that, which (popular) posts to POSSE, and which sites are referring you
#
[tantek]
cupparex++ for a good use-case for referrer analytics -> which referrers to keep POSSEing to (or not)

#

what is a server log
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "server log" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "server log is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
cupparex, there's lots here that lots of us have (nearly?) never heard of or used, so you are in good company πŸ™
#
gRegor
server log is /log
#
[tantek]
what is log
#
Loqi
πŸͺ΅ A log in the context of the IndieWeb is likely a web server log, like an Apache log or nginx log, logs for IndieWeb services like Bridgy, possibly short for weblog, or the IRC chat log https://indieweb.org/log

The ever expansive wiki, heh
#
cupparex
this week i've been surfing it by clicking the random page thing on the side bar
#
[tantek]
whoa amazing! have you found any gems that way?
#
cupparex
oh i have about 20 saved
#
cupparex
actually just shared in #indieweb one that i found really interesting and I think the concept could be fleshed out to help people see the value in indieweb
#
cupparex
what is use case
#
Loqi
Because there is as broad an array of types of websites as there are people, a motivating personal factor for joining the IndieWeb may entail a particular use case one has in mind for what they want to do online or how they'd like to interact with others https://indieweb.org/use_case
#
cupparex
I also found generations, the blogging challenges, webrings, digital gardens, the to do page, and a whole lot of pages that are above my knowledge base to understand right now
#
cupparex
I know generations is an abandoned concept, but I do think that even if the levels are abandoned, the core concept of helping those that know a little less than you are how communities grow
#
cupparex
been finding some cool blogs by using the random blog link on the sidebar too
#
cupparex
what is obsidian
#
Loqi
Obsidian is a free, multi-platform application for writing and maintaining plain text notes (for longevity) as markdown files that you can publish to your personal-domain https://indieweb.org/Obsidian
#
cupparex
this one was also really great.
#
cupparex
As an aside - I absolutely love how the wiki links out to show examples of different things in use. It's interesting to see how different things are implemented and how tools are combined by people differently.

CuppaRex[d] : I fully understand your sentiment! I quite noticed how much "implement your own" is prominent within the community--despite the "own a website then you are" (yes, this is technically correct but not how the average person will feel). I am actively working on a product that can work off-the-shelf (without limiting custom implementation) for people who are not technical enough, don't have the time, etc.

well I thought it was fixed. it works here https://indieweb.org/Template:cupparex but when i use the {{cupparex}} in my profile template as a test it's not showing as clickable. I have no idea what's going on
#
gRegor
It's all good. Wiki links to the page you're on don't work
#
gRegor
You can see it in action on some of the event pages too. For example, at the bottom of https://indieweb.org/events/2025-10-14-front-end-study-hall, the "10-14" is bolded instead of a link, because that's the page you're on. I should update the tutorial to note that, thanks for bringing it up!
