[Al_Abut] Lots of great points, love this discussion.
#
[Al_Abut] [tantek] and [artlung] - yeah, agreed, I’m totally uninterested in growth. My days of spamming Hacker News and having a small tight crew of people that did the same so we could upvote each others posts to get more traction are way, way behind me.
#
[Al_Abut] What I meant by the loneliness of RSS is more of the social interaction in the small, since that it’s a one way broadcast by design. So you end up having to close the gap (if you care to at all) with other mechanisms and forums, like webmentions or meetups.
#
[Al_Abut] I know that intellectually but sometimes I forget on an emotional level, you know?
#
[Al_Abut] Obviously it’s not the only feeling or even the main one, otherwise why would I even care about updating any part of my site. Usually I feel sense of ownership, pride, craftsmanship and exploratory curiosity.
#
[Al_Abut] [jeremycherfas] I know just what you mean. That’s why I don’t automatically POSSE my posts because of that dynamic you mentioned. The analogy I’ve used for people that post to a bunch of forums without actually interacting with anyone there is like showing up to a house party and not talking to anyone there, just handing out flyers for your own get together.
#
[Al_Abut] Totally agree for Twitter. It’s so bad there that I don’t even post at all.
#
[Al_Abut] On the other end of the spectrum, I’d be cool with auto-posting to Mastodon. Everything else is a case-by-case basis.
#
[Al_Abut] E.g. I wouldn’t put up a post on Linkedin about getting stuck in the mud on a bicycle ride.
#
[Al_Abut] it’s honestly corny as hell over there
#
[Al_Abut] like if I did post about my bicycle ride, I’d have to make it a metaphor about learning from failure or some other stupid nonsense
#
[Al_Abut] that’s the only thing that’s on there, ugh
#
[Al_Abut] honeypot for earnestness! Perfect description, chef’s kiss

carrvo The main reason I joined LinkedIn was that I was told straight up that >80% of the hiring in my region were through it. Not sure I believe it but that was too much to keep saying no to.
#
carrvo I *have* shared some of the IndieWeb on LinkedIn all the same.

[jeremycherfas] I’d be tempted to autoPSSE to Mastodon if I could figure out why, on the few occasions I did so, the Mastodon version looked like crap. I know and follow people there who do it with specific tags on items that they want POSSEd, which might be the way I would go.

[artlung] Speaking of reposting - Doc Searls mentioned that his blog is amplified to livejournal (I think he's done that for a long time) https://docsearls.livejournal.com ~ an odd throwback I am surprised works. I don't know anyone else I followed on LJ who still uses it.
#
[Trevor_Morris] I'm not sure I'm sold on POSSE. I only want certain content to go to certain channels. But I must make sharing stuff easier. I'm going to look to add buttons to my CMS which publishes specific items, which I currently do manually. Also "publishing on my own site *first*" doesn't really work for certain data, such as my Garmin/Strava activities – makes more sense to pull them *from* that silo.
#
[artlung] POSSE vs PESOS is sort of an odd spectrum. One thing I find is that sometimes I think of an Instagram as a PESOS source, and sometimes I think of it as a POSSE target. If I prepare the post in my text file or whatever, then post to both at the same time, it's sort of both. And yes, Strava data is by its nature PESOS because the "source" data is not the post, it's the value-added by Strava, where they turn raw data into a post, location,

[Trevor_Morris] Yeah, it's a spectrum and neither philosophy works perfectly. I *used* to use Instagram to publish my photos, then syndicate *back* to my website, but since they changed the API access, I just no longer post to Instagram, because getting *my* data out is too difficult.
#
[Trevor_Morris] Then I see entries on Mastodon, which are just title and link back to their source, which annoys me. There is RSS if I want to *follow* that content…

[Trevor_Morris] Instagram had an API and I had it all working, to sync from them. Then they migrated it over to Facebook API and I *could not fathom it.* It seemed like you needed a business IG account. So I just stopped posting there.
#
[schmarty] artlung: that. is. _absolutely. wild._

[aciccarello] My motivation for POSSE would be to allow people still in the silo to see my content.
#
[tantek] If you are on existing silos, then yes, the point is to ALWAYS* post first on your personal site, and then post a copy to the silo. This does not equate to "post everything on your personal site to THAT silo" and I'm not sure how people seemingly misinterpret POSSE like this. * = with notable exceptions where it's hard (Swarm, IG) or there's value add in what the silo does (Strava).
#
[tantek] With Swarm you can use ownyourswarm to PESOS more simply. Expand that to various responses, likes etc. per [snarfed]'s post. With IG when I was posting there, it was manual POSSE and frankly it was fine. It's helped motivate me to keep improving the photos support on my own site. Strava I have no idea how to represent on my own site. I use it a lot/mostly for private / friends-only posts which I haven't figured out yet for my own site.
