LoqiXSLT (eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformations) is a styling and transformation language for XML that some indieweb community members use to style their RSS feeds for human readability in browsers https://indieweb.org/XSLT
[Al_Abut]XSLT was my way of not having to learn SQL or JSP at my first gig, just had the devs make XML for the data instead. It worked… until it didn’t.
[lazcorp]It's a proposed standard to allow servers to ask visiting agents not to prefetch resources. Basically it's small JSON file you put at .well-known/traffic-advice, and in my case I've just set it to "go ahead and prefetch if you want"
[tantek]For folks that actively use a separate Mastodon account on someone else's server rather than federating their personal site, what are you use-cases for that? Or is it simply a matter of "easier", i.e. too much work to setup BridgyFed / WP plugin to federate?
to2dsA separate Mastodon account can be helpful for troubleshooting should one be daring enough to implement an ActivityPub server from scratch on their personal website.
[Al_Abut][tantek] way easier to set up. Occasionally I’ve been curious about using something like masto.host so I could have a fun URL like alabut.design or something, but not enough to make me lose the state I’ve built up so far.
[Al_Abut]Plus it turns out that domains for mastodon hosts don’t matter as much as they do for something like a website or email address. Some apps like Ivory even hide the domain part by default to have clean usernames.
[tantek]Thanks all, these are good answers. I feel it may be worth capturing some of this on either /federation or perhaps first /Mastodon since it's (nearly?) always people creating a Mastodon account in addition to their website, rather than some other software/service
[tantek]Having been disappointed in so many "go where the people are" places, sorry to say I'm done with that philosophy. That's how you end up investing time into things which die and go offline.
[tantek]the alternative is, instead of *going* to "where the people are", *distribute* to "where the people are". Hence POSSE. That way when those places disappear, you don't lose what you wrote, created, contributed etc.
to2dsFor longevity question, all those LLM crawlers slurping up the Internet, there's bound to be many copies of our personal sites in their cold storage :)
to2dsBF tried to pull my profile JSON and responded with 401 "Couldn't load https://toddpresta.com/todd to verify signature" when I attempted to reply to capjamesg post on his bridged website.
