i am considering how i want to structure my "post urls"
#
ulhar4409
if there is enough textual information then make a slug instead?
#

some community thoughts and experience on the URL design page:
#
gRegor
what is url design?
#
Loqi
URL design is the practice of deliberately designing URLs, in particular, permalinks, typically for a better UX for everyone who creates, reads, and shares content https://indieweb.org/URL_design
#
ulhar4409
another issue of note, tracking urls to files and vice versa (so far my system uses the filesystem as a database, more or less)
#
gRegor
week is an interesting delineation, not sure I've seen that much before
#
gRegor
I do YYYY/MM/slug and it's worked pretty well for me. slug is usually the title (for articles), or up to first 4 words if it's another type of post
#
gRegor
The p3k storage structure might be of interest on that second part: https://indieweb.org/p3k#Folder_Structure
#
ulhar4409
i don't even remember why i go by weeks tbh
#
ulhar4409
not as short as a day, not as long as a month?
#
ulhar4409
ok, i think yyyy/ww/id/slug? for socialling, and textual toplevel folders for curating
#
ulhar4409
bonus, easier to keep posts and their attachments together

ulhar4409 or go even more date nerdy with yyyy/ddd ordinal days! E.g. today is tel:2025-353
#
[tantek]
Separately, I think we discussed this on the /edit page right? https://indieweb.social/@myobie/115745459817148227

Nordic countries, as well as Germany and sometime the Netherlands use week numbers as common time demarcations. Regular conversation will have, “the 14th week should be a good time for that” and “the Thursday of week 16 is tentatively set for launch”. Calendars all have week numbers and there are complaints that many digital calendars don’t have week number options.
#
[tantek]
I don't like week numbers because they make you display misleading year numbers at the beginning and end of years
#
[tantek]
Like the year in metadata should always be the actual year that you made your post and not the year of the week number
#
[tantek]
Having a less significant factor impact the more significant factor is just bad math, and prone to be a source of errors

The Nordic response to misleading numbers at year beginning and ends is the odd day counts at the beginning and endings of each month. The rationale is they limit the mess to once a year not 12 times a year.

I could probably use a "w" indicator in the URL to indicate the second part is week, not month
#
[tantek]
you could also ditch the historical odd 7 day weeks and instead go with 5 day weeks (1-73) which would allow you to start every year with the start of week 1
#
[social]
Oh, my favorite option is 8 day weeks so every week has 5 day work week and 3 day weekends.
#
[tantek]
I think if you design a system that depends on ISO weeks, you are signing up for quite a bit of odd bugs, debugging, etc.: https://www.google.com/search?q=problems+with+ISO+weeks
#
[social]
I collect time theories (and have since high school), so I’m enjoying different takes.
#
[tantek]
[social] I'll take the work week vs weekend discussion to #indieweb-random unless there's an actual indieweb connection to work week vs weekend 🙂
#
aaronpk
oh gosh i remember dealing with this at one point for something
#
[social]
I joined a calendar open source project for a stretch and learned the hot mess of calendaring “standards”.
#
[tantek]
[social] it's only gotten worse over time unfortunately
#
[tantek]
I'll spare you the UNICODE CLDR details 🙃

It's Google calendar that allows start and end in different time zones, which is handy for flights

(just published it even though I used the draft date in the post)

is there a particular benefit(s) to defining "post kinds" on a micropub server / using them in a client?
#
ulhar4409
the main thing i can think of is it avoids an all-powerful "general case" in whatever gets to generate the html, instead focusing on specific, well-designed examples
#
ulhar4409
or, well-defined :P
#
ttybitnik
Hmmm. IDK since I never used it. But the idea of micropub sounded nice, I recently created this 'logs' section exactly to post with more frequency / ease the process.
#
ttybitnik
Gonna check it out whenever I have the time :-)

i do know a cat furry who would probably appreciate this if they ever choose to get a domain
troojg joined the channel
#
[tantek]
If they speak Catalan they can already get a .cat domain IIRC
#
[tantek]
one fewer letter
#
[artlung]
".meow" has undeniable appeal though - furry or merely cat-enjoying persons alike agree - curious to see if they hit that steep goal. Can't remember another kickstarter to create and manage a TLD.
#
[artlung]
(it's possible others have been crowd-funded given how many there are now)
#
ulhar4409
[tantek]: I am pretty sure they don't, unless we're not as familiar as I thought :P
#
ulhar4409
oh right - re: "if they speak Catalan"
