btrem[KevinMarks]2: my last comment was somewhat misleading. Basic auth is available in Drupal. But the default auth method is cookies. I can add basic auth to a rest export by merely clicking a checkbox in the rest export view ui. Adding basic http auth to an arbitrary url is not quite so easy.
