btremWhat's really disturbing is that, bad as iCal is, it's the easier of the two services I'd like to provide via the website. The other is card dav, that is a feed of vcards that an email client can subscribe to. AFAIK, card dav is some sort of xml bastardization. But I don't know for sure, because I've never found an example of card dav output, despite my searches.
btremgRegor: Zegnat: aaronpk: If I make a post for my website out of this chat, can I include your replies/questions/etc.? Absolutely no pressure. If you'd rather I did not, I'll work around it or not make the post.
[morgan]Yeah there is a baseline expectation that this place is logged so I think theres nothing wrong with it. I just honestly kinda urge you to write sentences like "I was trying to figure out iCal, and then I asked a group and a friendly gRegor (link to their website) answered some questions for me! I learned xyz things" rather than just reposting chat logs. its really more a interest/preference/style thing than necessary any politeness
[tantek]btrem, I admire both your patience and persistence. calendaring is always challenging, with auth doubly-so, within an existing CMS perhaps triply so.
btremThe only mitigating factor is that I only need read-only. If any member of this small community wants to take some action -- rsvp attending, or not attending, etc. -- they'll have to log into the website and take the appropriate action. But still, yes, quite challenging.
btremSo read-only, info going in only one direction, from server to calendar app. But syncing, so when someone adds an event, everyone's calendar app gets updated automatically.
btremIncidentally, it appears that, with the rest export module, I could have it work both ways. So a calendar client could update an event with an rsvp. But as I said earlier, rest export only does json and xml. Imagine what might be possible with CalDAV/JSON? ;-)
[tantek]re: "It would be a one-time import" no it wouldn't! For example, Meetable only support h-event and ICS, yet I am able to live subscribe to it in Gcal because it polls the ICS
[tantek]re: "But syncing, so when someone adds an event, everyone's calendar app gets updated automatically." no that's not syncing, that's subscribing which works with just ICS
[tantek]Meetable ICS also works in the Calendar app on iOS for example, it can subscribe to Meetable ICS feed and gets updated when people add events to Meetable
btrem[tantek]: Sorry, wrong terminology. It's not syncing, it's subscribing that I want. But I think Gcal does support CalDAV. That's how the subscribe part works. Like when I subscribe to a calendar using Thunderbird, I think it makes the request using `webdav://`. BICBW.
[tantek]point being: (1) Meetable supports ICS, not CalDAV. (2) it is possible to subscribe to Meetable events (all, a single tag, etc.) using the ICS URL on the bottom of the Meetable page, in Gcal (3) QED: Gcal does NOT require CalDAV to subscribe to a calendar and get updates.
btremThat might all be true. In Thunderbird, at least, if I follow all the steps you outlined, the request is made using webdav. Probably none of this really matters. I suspect there isn't much difference between http and webdav if the cal is read only.
btremAnd I also subscribe to events.indieweb.org using TBird, using (again, I wouldn't swear, but I recall running a test when I was troubleshooting my own calendar) webdav.
btremIt certainly doesn't support the stuff in webdav that made aaronpk run away. But -- again IIRC -- Thunderbird at least makes requests using a webdav url, even when I paste an explicit http url in the subscribe window.
btremI assume you mean starting with `webdav://` and then switching to `https://`. I don't recall seeing that in the requests. But I can't be 100% sure of any of that now. It's been more than a month since I was screwing around with it, trying to figure out why it was reporting "no calendar was found."
[morgan]I accepted a small-medium quest line. Im going to help assess the sturdiness of a volunteer orgs wordpress calendar plugin. Ill make suggestions but basically I think Ive managed expectations that Im mostly an assisting source
[morgan]Semanticness, Web Performance, Accessibility, to some degree also Sustainability. Current plugin is getting some mixed feedback etc., people may be ready for a change
simpleauthorityAnyone around? Wondering about the micropub spec (or rather, implementations) -- what should be done if while processing a media endpoint upload request, there is more than one file? Since afaik it only returns one URL. Should it error, or just ignore the rest?
[schmarty]Morning, simpleauthority! The spec is pretty explicit that a Micropub media post means one file. So a client sending more than one is out of spec. It's up to you how strict to be about that, if the spec doesn't say.
GWGI was trying to review [pfefferle]'s FedCM work, but I went down a rabbit hole...anyone know where I can get an update on the status of Firefox support for the FedCM stuff?
