is there a convenient way to manually get a token for use with micropub?
#
ulhar4409
huh neat... more involved than i think i'd like, though
#
ulhar4409
maybe illustrative enough for a more streamlined implementation on my own server
#
gRegor
What is it you're trying to do?
#
ulhar4409
Basically for cases where a client doesn't implement the full sign-in flow, I'd like a page where I can quickly sign in and get a token and just drop it in

Ah. I did add in my IndieAuth server a way for admins to create a token, though it was mainly for debugging.
#
gRegor
what micropub clients don't support the full sign in flow?

[Al_Abut] [aciccarello]: I use 11ty, but I don't generate a separate RSS feed. I'm trying to avoid the RSS feed getting broken in the future after I stop checking it. So I just have an `h-feed` of `h-*`s. But even that probably doesn't make sense since I don't offer a tool to covert that to RSS.

I only just learned what Granary is. Before that, I guess I figured by microformats were probably mostly a waste of time.

Dont want to take up space with my special interest too much but Ive been on a weeks long bender of learning about CSS animations and performance in browsers. specifically about GPU enabled animating in browsers. Im going to have a bunch of stuff on my personal website in coming days, and its prepping for a talk on the 28th
#
ulhar4409
reworking my micropub stuff a bit and i accidently got it to generate paths like /2026/01/20//n2/
#
ulhar4409
(double slash...)
#
ulhar4409
it still works without the double slash so theoretically fixable but a bit awkward to deal with

if i send a webmention and the source url redirects to some different url, will it treat the final url as the source instead?

I think there is a canonicalization piece in the spec

[tantek]
It should yes. Redirects should be respected

Add this effect to the million other things that I can’t believe CSS can do these days:

@Max1 ooh I'd actually be quite interested in something like this. Not sure how much I'd be able to properly _test_ it, but if you just need people to download and install, I'd be happy giving the offline mode a spin. Always looking for a way to drop Google Timeline, but so far nothing has come close
#
max1
There will be also backend to selfhost to visualize the timeline etc. but for now just the app will be release. If you are interested I would need to add you to a closed beta group with your google/playstore mail (requirement by playstore for new developers). You can send it to colota@mxd.codes or just leave it here(however you want). Then I will add you and you will be able to download the beta at https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.Colota

I will never get this chat :D. Its basically compatible out of the box because you can modify the api field names. Only difference is it is using Unix Timestamp instead of ISO 8601. @Murray: If you join the google group https://groups.google.com/g/colota-beta-testing you can also download it at https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.Colota

It looks like Indiekit only allows one post template format. Is that correct?
#
[aciccarello]
btrem, what do you mean? It is one function but you can have it output a lot of different ways based on the properties
#
btrem
[aciccarello]: It appears like I can specify only one postTemplate but maybe I've misunderstood the docs https://getindiekit.com/configuration/post-template
#
btrem
I might be missing something. My current publishing with 11ty works backwards from how (I think) micropub works. Every content type is in its own directory, with directory data files specifying microformats properties. For example, articles are in posts, and `posts.11tydata.json` includes `type: entry`, which in my nunjucks template is output with `<body class="h-{{ type }}">`.
#
[aciccarello]
Do you have multiple files per post?
#
btrem
Recipes go in a different directory where the 11tydata.json file has ``type: recipe`. Etc.
#
[aciccarello]
The folder is based on the post type config so that is fine
#
btrem
Only in the sense that posts rely -- heavily -- on data in directory files.
#
btrem
Ok, but I also have multiple types that are all `h-entry` but go in different directories. And they have to go in different directories because they have different data needs.
#
[aciccarello]
The post template is a JS function so you can have it output different things based on the micropub properties.
#
btrem
Oh of course. So `if (foo.type == recipe) { //recipe } else if ... That makes sense. But can Indiekit handle putting different `entry` posts in different places?
#
[aciccarello]
Yep, IndieKit will automatically figure out the post type via post-type discovery. If it has a photo it is a photo post. If it has a bookmark property it is a bookmark. For recipe you might have it look for a custom ingredients property to determine the type.

#
btrem
And can I specify where in the folder structure a post will be saved?
#
[aciccarello]
Yes, that would be in the post type config https://getindiekit.com/configuration/post-types
#
btrem
When I say my current publishing flow is backwards from how micropub works, what I mean is that I don't specify microformat properties in the post. I put them in certain folders, and the combination of the 11ty data cascade and templates outputs mf props. I hope that makes sense.
#
btrem
So with micropub, I need to specify those properties in the `POST` data, Right?
#
[aciccarello]
I think that's fairly normal. The micropub spec already defines most of the standard post type formats. It's just up to your micropub server (Indiekit) to figure out what to do with that data.
#
btrem
[aciccarello]++ the post-types link looks very helpful. Thanks. I didn't across that on my own. Hard to search for something when you know so little about the topic. :/

Welcome 😁
#

[Al_Abut] re 11ty. Advantage: you can do lots with data. For example, I'm currently looking to see if I can make Indiekit work for my setup. I learned that I can configure a list of post categories (aka tags) by pointing it to a url that returns a json array of such tags.
#
btrem
It took me about 5 minutes to create a nunjucks template to output the json array in a file. Caveat: I already had a function to generate a list of unique tags. But still, pretty nice to be able to do that in such a short amount of time.
#
btrem
Disadvantage: it's javascript-based. I've learned a lot of js over the past few years. But I wish I had been learning a lot of, I dunno, maybe Python?, instead.
#
[aciccarello]
For me, the fact 11ty is JS and had a direct migration from Jekyll/Ruby was a big benefit for me. And then the flexibility around data was huge. I'm much more comfortable writing plugins for it than I was with Jekyll.
#
[aciccarello]
The variety of template languages is also a plus. And the maintainer is very intentional about reducing dependencies and long term maintenance.
#
btrem
+1 for the variety of template languages.
#
btrem
I have written a couple of plugins. I can't compare it to writing a plugin for other SSGs since I've only used the one. But it's worth noting that I'm a bit of an amateur and I still managed it.
#

Hey

tgagor
I integrated webmention.io with my blog and I query its API with JavaScript to show mentions and likes back on my site - do far all good.
#
tgagor
The thing is that, not all likes/re-posts show up. Do you know about any rate limits on this service or other reasons?
cotsuka and vriska joined the channel
#
btrem
I don't think there are rate limits, BICBW. When you say "not all likes/re-posts show up," do you mean they don't show up on your wementions.io dashboard?
#
btrem
Or they are on your dashboard, but not on your site after hitting the API?
#
gRegor
Do you have an example permalink for a like/repost that didn't show up? Are you using any other services like brid.gy that send back webmentions for sites that don't send them directly?
