re: dates in blogs
#
aspizu
how should I store dates in my blogs

#
[tantek]
I believe I have seen two approaches, either integer seconds since epoch start (or finer grained if you post semi-automated or passive posts that could collide on a 1s boundary), or ISO 8601 dates (and times).
#
aspizu
a standaard format would be ideal
#
aspizu
[edit] a standard format would be ideal
#
aspizu
im trying to get the modifcation date from git itself
#
aspizu
```
#
aspizu
~/work/aspiz.uk (main)> git log -1 --format=%cd package.json
#
aspizu
Sun Feb 8 20:29:31 2026 +0530```
#
aspizu
this is non-standard i think
#
[tantek]
indeed.
#
[tantek]
what is ISO date
#
Loqi
ISO8601 is an international standard for dates and times roughly in the form YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS, or with timezone offset, YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS +0000 https://indieweb.org/ISO_Date
#
MD87
Try `git log -1 --date=iso --format=%cd`
#
aspizu
nice thanks
#
aspizu
its not exactly ISO
#
aspizu
no T seprator
#
[tantek]
T separator is not required for ISO8601
#
[tantek]
you can have a space between date and time
#
[tantek]
bunch of us recommend that for better (human / developer) readability
#
[tantek]
aspizu, I use ISO 8601 ordinal dates and HH:MM times myself because in practice I don't find myself creating more than one post a minute
#
[tantek]
if necessary, my system will read / allow for HH:MM:SS so I can use that as needed
#
aspizu
```js
#
aspizu
const modificationDate = parseISO(
#
aspizu
await $`git log -1 --date=iso --format=%cd -- ${blog.filePath} || date -Iseconds -r ${blog.filePath}`.text(),
#
aspizu
)```
#
aspizu
okaay, now about the display format
#
aspizu
`Last updated February 10, 2026`
#
aspizu
or time ago
#
[tantek]
what is time since
#
[tantek]
what is since
#
[tantek]
what is relative time
#
Loqi
relative dates are a way of converting absolute date-times like year, month, day, and time into a more human friendly expression of time elapsed like "10 minutes ago" or "4 days ago" https://indieweb.org/relative_time

[tantek]
there we go

I had a fun one of those in the pub where the server time didn't match local time so my checkin was in the future
#
[tantek]
hah! add it to the wiki page! 😂

I showed up in Frankfurt about a month early for my return flight (their system had a calendaring problem when I booked the flight). I was returning on the 11th, but of which month. They put me on a flight the next day and put me up for the night and had a car service available.

I read Kevin’s note as I finished an exploration in pre-cording events. The timing was perfect.

I can't implement optional or auto-correcting slugs on a static-site

[tantek]
presumably you can create meta refresh redirects for any errant slugs to the correct slug

Errant slugs can be a big problem in web gardens :D
#
ulhar4409
you *might* be able to do that with an .htaccess if your host uses Apache
#
ulhar4409
e.g. mine does, but i know Neocities doesn't

Decluttered my blog post template a bit more by adding another non-JS popup (using the global popover attribute) to tidy away details of the "Subscribe by RSS, Email, or ActivityPub"

I agree about the link text. It's quite hard for me to read too.
#
[lazcorp]
Argh, I forgot about dark mode...
#
[lazcorp]
[gRegorLove] / [capjamesg] - the link text (in dark mode) should be lighter now - it might need a hard refresh
#
gRegor
much better!
