Is anyone here using Bridgy Fed for their website?
#
[artlung]
fair number of folks. https://indieweb.org/Bridgy_Fed#IndieWeb_Examples should give you a few
#
CrowderSoup
I am using Bridgy, but haven't tried Bridgy Fed.
#
CrowderSoup
burgeonlab: cool!
#
NegateThis
I like the setup I have now for my site + bridgy fed. Posts get converted to a "tweet" that is just a link to the post. Great.
#
NegateThis
I'm still not sure how I want to organize "notes" and wanted some ideas. Submitting "posts" vs "notes" to Bridgy Fed is the same process, where a note is an h-entry without a title. Since it's the same process, I was thinking of having a "/notes" slug on my website which would be a list of links to notes and each note would have its own full page. Basically the exact same way that blog posts are
#
NegateThis
But it seems a little ridiculous to make a completely new blog post page for a single lil note
#
NegateThis
So I was thinking of having notes on one infinitely expanding page, but then dealing with Webmentions would be much more complicated
NegateThis joined the channel; NegateThis left the channel
#
CrowderSoup
NegateThis: there's some folks who do that I think. I have a "full page" for each type of post (including notes) on my site because each post is a unique thing with a canonical URL on my domain.

I feel like it's too early to be reviewing and merging this big of a PR for my blog lol: https://github.com/CrowderSoup/webstead/pull/109/changes

#
[Murray]
@NegateThis: I think there can be a benefit to employing both strategies. I think of notes as content _fragments_, which means I have a /notes page which has them all in a big long list (but unlike an article feed or something, all of the content is present), which I've paginated as it got too unwieldy
#
[Murray]
Whilst not public, I'm also working on turning them into a digital garden, where they will be added automatically to topic pages based on their own tags, effectively allowing me to built out content in a digital garden style
#
[Murray]
But then each note also gets it own URL. I've found that very useful, not just for supporting things like webmentions, but also for linking to notes or sharing them. All part of being "fragmentary", it gives me the ability to use them in every way possible

#
NegateThis
Hmm I'm looking at your page and this is interesting. You've got an "infinitely expanding" feed (well, it's paginated, but still) where the contents of notes are visible, but they're also links to the full page.
#
[Trevor_Morris]
I would 100% recommend permalink pages for any "atomic" content. Share-ability, bookmarkable.
#
NegateThis
This is very smart. The feed can have your notes displayed in a way more typical of a social media feed, but then the full page can handle the webmentions, replies, etc.
#
NegateThis
I think I'll incorporate something like that
#
[Trevor_Morris]
Exactly.
#
[Trevor_Morris]
Think about Mastodon interface, a list of posts, but each has a unique URL which can be bookmarked or shared.
#
NegateThis
Yeah seems obvious in retrospect
#
[KevinMarks]
so like the oldschool blog UI where the post id on the page was the permalink?
#
[KevinMarks]
I am wondering how to improve my PESOS of note posts from twitter, mastodon, bsky, known, google+ etc, and having a page per post seems a lot for a static site
#
[Trevor_Morris]
At what scale does static content become too much? Mine is all in a database, due to volume and relationships between content.
#
[Murray]
I've heard of Eleventy sites that have 10,000s of pages, and whilst build times may start to chug along, 100,000's of pages should remain manageable
#
[Murray]
Though this is where partial rebuilds become a bit of a holy grail for me. It's something Gatsby was getting close to solving, before Netlify shuttered it; Astro has been dabbling, but still don't have a good solution
#
[Murray]
Some way to signal that only _changed files_ should be rebuilt or created, and keep the rest, would (I'd say) allow static content to scale almost indefinitely

[Murray]
@NegateThis one of the things I dislike most about my /notes feed is that the formatting works less well in that column-based layout than it should. I'm also still not a huge fan of how hard it is to find the permalink, but it's a good start. My notes need some general love; it's one of the reasons I'm working on a digital garden 🙂
#
NegateThis
[Murray]: Could you link your page so I can see what you mean exactly?
#
[KevinMarks]
Tantek's solution of intermediate parseable files makes some sense. I was thinking along the lines of Ben Ward's old twitter export as monthly static files (though I think it's js;dr here with the SPA parsing json files ) https://kevinmarks.com/tweets/
#
[tantek]
What is a bim?
#
Loqi
bim is short for newcal bi-month, or 61 day period (except for the last 60 days of a non-leap-year) https://indieweb.org/bim
#
[KevinMarks]
Do you serve raw bim files too? Like a microformats based PDS
#
[Trevor_Morris]
I think splitting up long archives into sensible chunks makes sense. Each page could also have in-page linking using #hash
#
burgeonlab
NegateThis: I'm only starting out with the /notes on my Hugo site via Indiekit, and I also use a feed (which will be paginated) style page that displays full content of notes and then each note has a permalink to its own page. Indiekit allows for automatic syndication to Mastodon, but I haven't gotten around to trying that yet. (I don't use bridgy)
#
[tantek]
My original blog was like that. One static file per month. Now the static files are merely "storage" that supports the each-post-has-its-own-page permalinks
#
[tantek]
I chose bims instead of Gregorian months for my backend static files because math.
#
[Murray]
@NegateThis: it's this page, you can see how the formatting is a little all over the place, and the permalink is the ⛓️ emoji, which isn't great/super accessible: https://theadhocracy.co.uk/notes
#
[KevinMarks]
they're still mf1?
#
[tantek]
Remember when "#" meant permalink icon instead of hashtag? Pepperidge Farm remembers
#
[KevinMarks]
I still have them on my blogger blog
#
capjamesg
It did? Wow!
#
[Murray]
You still see it used for anchor tags (e.g. headings) a fair bit, which feels mildly anachronistic these days
cotsuka joined the channel
#
burgeonlab
I see it as anchor tags a lot and I thought that's just Markdown for headings... but it makes sense now it is derived from the old permalink icon!
#
[KevinMarks]
no, it's still part of the web, hence fragmentions as an extension (now with standardised #:~: )
#
[KevinMarks]
note that the blogger markup still uses `<a name="116236031533275401"></a>` instead of `id` for this
#
NegateThis
[Murray], The way CrowderSoup handles it is a bit more elegant, but it may break now for longer "notes"

I'm collecting the URLs for silo social media sites that are the plainest version of "just show me posts from who I follow" since mostly these sites obfuscate how to get to that view. https://smorgasborg.artlung.com/following-urls/

[tantek]
remembers when /following used to be the page of the *people* you were following rather than their posts 🙃
#
[artlung]
I don't believe either Twitter or Bluesky provide a querystring or permalink to induce the user setting to default to following.
#
NegateThis
Per the discussions earlier regarding notes feeds, I created a rough draft: https://negatethis.com/notes/
#
[artlung]
(But would be glad to learn if there are tricks to induce it)
#
NegateThis
The Clojure library I use does two things: slurp directories to create a hash map (a.k.a dictionary) in the form {"/path/to/file" "file contents"}, and spits a hash map to a directory tree, so {"/path/to/index.html" "HTML"} becomes a file with the contents "HTML" at the specific path.
#
NegateThis
You can place key-value pairs in the page-map before spitting it to make "special pages", such as the notes feed. The notes feed maps through the children of /notes/, grabs their content and permalink, and creates a mini feed item on the special "/notes" page. This item is barebones, but the permalinked page has everything necessary for bridging through Bridgy Fed, receiving Webmentions, etc.
#
gRegor
I think the Twitter command for it is CTRL+W (or CMD+W on Mac?)
#
gRegor
Bsky defaults to "Following" for me at https://bsky.app/, are you seeing something different? Unless you mean only seeing original posts, no reposts
#
[artlung]
yeah, that's what I'm saying, there's no "special" url for it. It's a setting, often a default, but sometimes it gets overridden.
#
gRegor
gotcha
#
[artlung]
(for both Bsky and X). Mastodon seems to default to following but does not call it out, only non-following application view states get special urls
#
gRegor
Alas, bsky is js;dr too. I was going to try to find a direct link to one of the feeds (e.g. I "subscribed" to a "Mutuals" feed), but can't seem to.
#
MD87
I think following is the one feed you can't link to on bluesky, because it's a special thing handled differently to everything else. Mutuals for example you can get to via https://bsky.app/profile/bsky.app/feed/mutuals
#
MD87
There are third-party feeds that just show you people you're following, like https://bsky.app/profile/following-classic.ripperoni.com/feed/follow-orig
#
gRegor
oh nice! thanks for that link
