A lot of companies just blanket ban known VPNs to help prevent abuse of their services

What do y'all think about typescript? I get it's purpose and the reason it exists, but i can't help but feel like it slows down development for type safety that isn't always 100% (because it's possible to accidentally circumvent the type hints)

it's...better than javascript? low bar though

bubbybumble, I like TS for clarity of data structures and parameters. I've also played around with using the TS compiler on JSDoc annotated JS files. Either way I generally prefer it to flying blind.

hmm alright
#

bubbybumble, type safety definitely only solves a certain class of bug which can be addressed a few different ways (JSDoc comments for instance) but I think overall TS is worthwhile. In particular, I think it makes large applications much easier to reason about.

I'm currently designing a new API service at work to replace an old RPC style API. TypeScript vs JS was one of our considerations but TS is winning out in the end,.

aciccarello, updated this to hopefully provide more clarity on the current state of proposals based on prior chat here in #indieweb-dev: https://microformats.org/wiki/source-code-brainstorming#Alternatives
#

I'd reply to Zach's post if my site was up. Feel free to link him to that section for the latest. Lots more gardening/cleanup needed on source-code related pages on the #microformats wiki

Hey my friend just bought their first custom domain. They are asking me lots of questions about email forwarding, hosting, stuff like that. Im fielding them pretty well but are really hammering questions about how to do things for free. I said this is an area which doesnt really come for free, if you arent paying anything you gotta ask if you yourself are the product? Is that valid?
#
[morgan]
Currently tossing up between proton mail, fast mail, or google workspace with the custom domain
#
capjamesg
I have had a good experience with Proton.
#
[snarfed]
[morgan] re "not free," yes, very valid. cost for non-free domain and web services is generally very cheap, at least for small personal web sites etc. given how much people generally pay for eg cell phone service, asking them to pay $5-50/yr total for a domain, web site, email forwarding, etc is something like 1/10th of that cell service cost, and imho entirely reasonable these days

we have an FAQ on that I believe

It looks like we don't have a page for "wiki gardening" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "wiki gardening is ____", a sentence describing the term)

🌳 garden is a place for deliberate growing of plants, whether trees, whether decorative, fruit bearing, or otherwise edible, that are sometimes the primary subject of IndieWeb posts, and is an area of exploration for more structured posts around planting, plant growth, flowering, bearing fruit etc https://indieweb.org/garden

Hey I'm wondering what's the general consensus around using Javascript? I'm making a portfolio as a UX designer and animator, and it seems like I need Javascript here and there to get some nice interaction feedback. Maybe I'm wrong. But it seems like I'll need compromise here and there when my field of work is largely visual

addam89: I'm a amateur self-taught webdev and I think the general consensus here from chatting with the group is that a bit of JS is okay to help with interactivity, etc but try not to rely on it fully when HTML or CSS can do the job.
#
addam89
Thanks, yeah that sounds reasonable and what I've been trying to stick with, so good to know!

It depends of course on the effect you're seeking though. There's a lot of great CSS that removes the need for JS for many presentational and

animation purposes.
