[morgan] Just as a general rule of thumb I would say your not going to go wrong with some JavaScript for a personal website or portfolio. It's the companies and corps that force huge payloads and stuff that's a problem
#
NegateThis Yeah a bit of supplementary JS in someone's personal site isn't the end of the world
#
NegateThis Usually people's criticisms come from huge node projects that bring in hundreds of MBs of JS libraries
#
NegateThis On that topic, what's the consensus on displaying webmentions via JS vs building them into a page?

#
bubbybumble I understood the issue was that you cant read the html on some modern sites without having js enabled.
#
[tantek]3 πββοΈ NOSCRIPT++
#
[tantek]3 and when giving talks with sites as examples, I show the NOSCRIPT version, big on the screen, for everyone to see
#
bubbybumble addam89[d]: if you are a UX designer I feel like having some JS is mandatory on the site. Not sure since I went the backend route more but I would image it can only help
#
bubbybumble what is NOSCRIPT
#
Loqi It looks like we don't have a page for "NOSCRIPT" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "NOSCRIPT is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
bubbybumble oh...
#
bubbybumble i saw the js;dr page
#
bubbybumble oh its an extension, that's cool. I thought browsers had that as a feature by default but I guess not
#
[tantek]3 NOSCRIPT is /js;dr#How_to_browse
#
[tantek]3 they used to. NOSCRIPT makes it more palatable with easy to click temp or persistent allow listing of domains
#
bubbybumble ah I see
#
bubbybumble javascript as a principle doesn't bother me, not even as a language (jank as it is), it's just the lack of optimizations for websites and tech that dont need to be as laggy as they are on old devices. I wish older tech wasn't seen as obsolete so fast, especially things like phones that barely change through the years
#
[tantek]3 what is green
#
Loqi Green Computing is practice of using computers and their resources in environmentally responsible way. Community members may try to use renewable energy, recycled computers, owning rather than streaming media, and creating websites with smaller page loads https://indieweb.org/green
#
bubbybumble I try owning for selfish reasons, it's cool! I love discs of all kinds. I want a minidisc player, that's on my bucket list to find one
#
bubbybumble smaller page loads seems so obvious and important and yet big companies dont do it for some reason... same with video games now being rediculous for what they are in terms of required specs. I wouldnt be surprised if big companies are incentivized by the hardware companies to make their stuff less optimized
#
[tantek]3 NOSCRIPT is a great way to consume fewer resources (network, electricity) while browsing
#
[morgan] It seems incredibly easy to say but like whatever you are doing just feel confident in what you have to explain to people. "I used JavaScript to perform animations, nice to have, but not critical to the message, but to demonstrate my skills" perhaps is one line that works for me

#
bubbybumble [tantek]3: does it block ads
#
[tantek]3 fairly well, any ads on external script for sure
#
dashing.msi3184 The NoScript extension is wonderful, both for performance and to reduce data fed to advertisers. Before I installed it, during daily surfing on a single tab, my browser comprised nearly all of my computer processing (and or memory; I can't quite recall [no, the pun isn't intended]).
#
dashing.msi3184 Once I began to use NoScript, I saw such a relief of resource utilization. It can be a bit tedious to check each external resource, and then to allow the non-nefarious ones, but once the habit is formed, the benefits are very enjoyable.
#
NegateThis bubbybumble: There's a yearly tech exchange in my area and last year some dude had a huge stash of minidiscs and some minidisc players. I may grab some this year if he's around again. I just love how vibrant they are
#
bubbybumble NegateThis: wooooaaahhh
#
bubbybumble the ipod has me thinking about that trend of decentralizing your smartphone
#
bubbybumble I wish the internet did the same thing, sort of like the indieweb idea of not all being on one social media site
#
bubbybumble collecting CDs is so awesome but yeah minidiscs look so satisfying, I wouldnt even be surprised if that had a comeback at some point since we are currently in the vinyl+cassette comeback, CD prices are luckily low for me rn but once those comeback it will skyrocket and eventually maybe people will see these things have more benefit than just nostalgia
#
NegateThis Collecting physical music or having a dedicated music device is cool, but streaming, whether from a company or a self-hosted setup, lets you do cool stuff like displaying what you're listening to on your personal site
#
NegateThis Like what fnhipster showed off earlier
#
bubbybumble oh yeah I saw that on some sites
#
bubbybumble yeahhh
#
bubbybumble i mean if I put it into my pc to listen I could probably find soooomee way to do it
#
bubbybumble but IDK I think not having what you are listening to publically broadcast to the internet at all times is a pro not a con, unless you explicitly do it which most people dont
#
bubbybumble I had more enjoyment looking thru fnhipsters vinyl collection on the site which was also awesome
#
[morgan] https://www.morganwebdev.org/posts/music-mission/ I just felt like it was relevant enough to link to a post on my own website. I've been collecting some CDs

WinnerWind so, my school managed to figure out how to block all the zero trust users at school, which sucks because now none of us can use our VPN
#
WinnerWind they are personally challenging me to create my own VPN to bypass theirs. small issue, UDP is blocked
#
WinnerWind challenge accepted
#
WinnerWind so here's a bunch of limitations that school wifi imposes: 1) no UDP 2) whitelisted sites only 3) no ports other than 443 and 80 4) no LAN for connected devices 5) no P2P 6) uPnP? kiss that goodbye 7) cannot use cloudflare's zero trust service
#
WinnerWind HOWEVER, i am able to text here, at school, which is running off VNC running at home, and im connected to that via cloudflared, so i wonder if i can use cloudflared to wrap a wireguard vpn
#
WinnerWind ok seems like this is an unintended way to use cloudflared
#
WinnerWind oh my god i am the best network administrator ever what the fuck i managed to pull it off in 5 minutes
#
WinnerWind i wrapped a socks5 proxy in cloudflared
#
WinnerWind okay maybe im gloating too muc, it wasnt that hard

[Trevor_Morris] I love those Digital Garden connected page graphs that appear on Obsidian published websites. So I decided to build one for my music event relationships. I love how this has turned out. For example: https://www.trovster.com/music/artists/reel-big-fish#artist-connection-graph
#
bubbybumble woahhh howd you do that
#
bubbybumble is that a library

theboeh Continuing a conversation from the indieweb channel...
#
theboeh Any recommendations for RSS readers?
#
bubbybumble lol I actually don't know what that is actually
#
bubbybumble what is rss
#
Loqi RSS is an acronym for a set of XML feed file format variants used for syndicating time-stamped content from web sites like blogs and podcasts, and sometimes a shorthand for feed file formats as a whole including Atom, or even more broadly for the concept of feeds or syndication in general https://indieweb.org/RSS
cotsuka joined the channel
#
[Trevor_Morris] bubbybumble it is using a JavaScript library to build the interface. All the data comes from my app (see the list of events above the graph).
#
[Trevor_Morris] theboeh: someone asked this the other day in another Slack. I use Feedly as a pinned tab in Firefox. I hear good things about https://reederapp.com and a friend uses https://netnewswire.com Feedbin was also recommended.
#
bubbybumble that's really cool. That view in obsidian is really neat

deathcomestotime i can recommend FeedCity too
#
WinnerWind <theboeh> i personally use KOReader on my kindle as an RSS reader
#
WinnerWind i think Thunderbird Mail client also has a RSS reader but i dont use it
#
WinnerWind the beauty of KOReader is that you can bring it online for 30 seconds, download your RSS, then take it offline
#
WinnerWind thats what i do
#
theboeh Nice, haven't heard of KOReader, thanks!
#
WinnerWind have fun! it's pretty much optimized for E-readers only but it does run on linux, albiet not reccomended
#
WinnerWind (it makes sense if you realize that all e-readers happen to be linux nowadays)
#
fnhipster_ deathcomestotime, to answer your question about how I built the ASCII Stream from fnhipster.com.
#
fnhipster_ I took a monthβs sabbatical and finally built an idea Iβd had for a long time. Iβll probably write a blog post with the details, but at a high level:
#
IWDiscord <fβnhipster_>
#
fnhipster_ My goal wasnβt to stream video; it had to be all text. So I made a private streamer page thatβs entirely JavaScript in the browser. It captures webcam video and draws it to an HTML canvas, then uses the image's brightness to convert it to ASCII characters. Thereβs some math (that I worked out with Cursor AI, to be honest) that handles dimensions and scaling. Those ASCII strings are sent over a WebSocket to a worker I run
#
IWDiscord <fβnhipster_>
#
deathcomestotime that's so cool
#
deathcomestotime i would definitely read that blogpost!
#
[Trevor_Morris] Wow, so that ASCII stream is live from your webcam *now*?
#
[Trevor_Morris] I see the ascii-stream/watch API endpoint streaming data.
#
fnhipster_ yes
#
fnhipster_ I made it fancier by using exposing a Virtual Webcam in OBS so I can do transitions, and also stream videos
#
CrowderSoup Would you expect a microsub reader to save your interactions (likes, replies, reposts, etc.) to show alongside the posts you're interacting with? I'm building my own because this was something I wanted to see but I'm curious if I'm alone in that lol

GuestZero I have a weird problem here, maybe somebody has an idea...: We're linking to an external text source, whose pages get stuck in a reload loop then β and *only* when we're the referrer/origin.
#
GuestZero our site: nietzsche-poparts.ch β target site: text passages on nietzschesource.org
#
bubbybumble aauughh I hate that, I feel like I totally have encountered that issue before but I can't remember what causes it
#
GuestZero bubbybumble :o)
#
[artlung] `document.querySelectorAll('a').forEach((el) =>
{ el.style.border = (el.href.indexOf('http://nietzschesource.org') > -1 ) ? '3px solid red' : '1px solid #000' } );`#
GuestZero artlung in some footnotes, e.g. nr. 18 on this article: https://www.nietzsche-poparts.ch/posts/vater-sein-mit-nietzsche
#
GuestZero oh, thank you! that may be
#
bubbybumble ok I logged into the wiki, which was awesome but like, I can't wrap my brain around how it works/ how it would be secure
#
bubbybumble if this is secure I wish the whole internet had their own personal site and could do passwordless login to everything...
#
bubbybumble but like what stops someone actually from typing in my website to log in? what about my connection makes it clear it's me?

deathcomestotime does anyone have recommendations for server hardware (for small projects obviously)
cotsuka joined the channel
#
deathcomestotime no more like hardware to host from home. but thanks!
#
dashing.msi3184 Raspberry Pis are pretty affordable for small personal sites. If you have old hardware around the house you could cluster their resources (though I'm not exactly sure on how to do that)

bubbybumble is it safe to do so? I would like to avoid port forwarding but hosting from a pi sounds fun

CrowderSoup I love hosting stuff at home but my home internet isnβt stable enough for me to consider it for hosting my website.
#
bubbybumble i think there's a way to do it with a cloudflare tunnel or something like that
#
bubbybumble it would literally cost me more than just keeping it on netlify though lol
#
CrowderSoup I want to get a beelink but right now Iβm running a few things just at home (ad blocker and stuff) on an intel nuc
#
CrowderSoup Up until late last year my website was a static site on netlify. But I ended up deciding to build my own CMS for _reasons_ lol

[artlung] Still on the raw side, but I have homegrown search working satisfactorily. It first does my newer pages, then does the blog posts in WordPress. https://artlung.com/search/?q=indieweb.org ... the way I have it set up I can augment in future to search twitter and flickr posts and anything else I import. The main decision I made for better or worse is to use MySQL and natural language search and a homegrown index.
#
[artlung] https://artlung.com/search/?q=Tantek.com heh. reasonable results!
