and here we go. anyone running NGINX, especially on your own server, make sure you've patched it since April 21: https://thehackernews.com/2026/05/18-year-old-nginx-rewrite-module-flaw.html

Doing a few searches on the indieweb wiki I don't see anyone who's done this: https://fredchan.org/blog/locality-domains-guide/ - but as a civic minded person I really like the idea of it. Of course, it's a terrible sign that the links on that page for how to do it go to the internet archive. https://web.archive.org/web/20090909141302/http://neustar.us/register/delegated_subdomains.txt

Plenty of .us domains, none with a state qualifier: https://indieweb.org/Special:LinkSearch?target=us&namespace=
#
[artlung]
(at least in the top 50)
#
[capjamesg]
I wonder how this would work if you moved physically though.
#
[artlung]
There's one us state + us and it was the snowplow naming contest https://www.dot.state.mn.us/nameasnowplow/ (an official minnesota thing). I did see a fair number of domains held by GWG. Hi David!
#
[capjamesg]
I participated in that competition. I didn’t win 😂
#
[capjamesg]
Looks like “The Life of a Snowgirl” was a winner this year. I wish I had come up with that 😂

https://teensy.news - new reader. no deficit of reader software these days. not on the wiki yet. but, there are so many not sure we can keep up.

[capjamesg] re: "how this would work if you moved physically" — that may be a good reason to register a domain like that for a logical name for your residence then rather than as a personal domain. Here in SF many people name their residences (e.g. put them on Swarm as a named venue) and most of the time they keep that name if they move within the city.

How might I get the title of a web page given its url? I'm thinking retrieve the content, parse it, first look for mf2 `p-name`, then maybe look for meta tags, and all else failing, get the (first?) `<h1>` element.
#
btrem
I imagine I'd have to parse the text content twice, though. Once for microformats, then again using an html parser.
#
btrem
Should have mentioned: I'm using node.js. So the mf parser is a no-brainer. But if I'm thinking about this correctly, then I'd welcome recommendations for node html parsers.
#
[tantek]
I believe /link-preview may have a "how to" on that

[KevinMarks]
This is assuming that the <title> tag is not the right answer as that is often SEO'd to noise?
#
[KevinMarks]
The mf parser will be calling an html parser internally, so there may be a way to get the parsed tree out of that.

[KevinMarks]: the <title> tag, unfortunately, typically includes the site name along with the page name. It's what I do, in fact. I'm sort of stuck with the limitations of html, which would have done better with a <title> tag and a <site> tag, or a <collection> tag, or some such thing. Alas no.
#
btrem
[tantek]: /link-preview mentions h-entry parsing. But not much more that I can see on a quick read.
#
btrem
There are other potential sources for the page title that I am not familiar with because I don't use them, e.g., Facebook tags, Twitter card, Dublin core, `og:title` (which I think is one of those), perhaps more?
#
[tantek]
HTML title tag was fine, it was search engine algorithms that warped publisher use of it 🫠
#
[tantek]
similarly all those other sources are "optimized" for their specific destinations, not for the "title" of the page
#
[tantek]
nevermind the invisible metadata/tag rot problem

I don’t like how much Cloudflare tracks.
#
[capjamesg]
I toggled on the Cloudflare proxy for my blog this week, in part because I was getting a lot of scrapers, and apparently they also track page views.
#
[capjamesg]
Ah I have to _opt out_ of Real User Monitoring (RUM) analytics.
#
[capjamesg]
Okay that seems to have removed the script loading on my pages and the iframe Cloudflare was using as part of it.

[snarfed]++ thanks for the gh links. Alas, I don't use python. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this before, but I do wish I had gone with a python-based ssg instead of the javascript-based one I use. I like 11ty, but I'd rather have been learning python these last few years instead of js.
#
btrem
Still, it's good to see how you did in python. It should help me with a js approach if I decide to go down this path.
