[tantek]
[snarfed] [fluffy] I have just updated two previous posts with the hashtag "#focus" so I'm curious if they'll now show up e.g. in https://indieweb.social/tags/focus
#
[tantek]
and it looks like no, they do not. my latest post with that same hashtag does show up at the top however, showing that putting the hashtag on the post the first time it is federated by BridgyFed still works. so I suspect that if Mastodon supports showing posts with updated hashtags, in those hashtag results, that something may be getting dropped in the BridgyFed Update -> Mastodon portion. heads-up [snarfed]
#
[tantek]
i.e. I am seeing a different result than [fluffy] stated above, and I am using BridgyFed to federate an update, whereas Fluffy's test above was an update (with a new hashtag) directly on one Mastodon server, then showing up in that tag list on a second Mastodon server which is following that first account.
#
[tantek]
so Mastodon -> update with new hashtag -> Mastodon is working
#
[tantek]
while BridgyFed -> update with new hashtag -> Mastodon is not working (apparently)
#
[tantek]
[snarfed] LMK if you need additional details or want me to perform additional tests.
#
[tantek]
top of https://mention.tech/ right now shows my three posts and mentions to BridgyFed all responding with 202
#
[snarfed]
hmm. I see the update on one of your older posts on indieweb.social, ie with #focus, https://indieweb.social/@tantek.com@tantek.com/116713149486697128 (requires login)
#
[snarfed]
I haven't been tracking the tag feeds thing closely, and afaik BF updates are working in general, including hashtags, and including this example of yours. let me know if you find evidence that BF isn't sending those updates in other cases though
#
[tantek]
and that same post you link to on it indiewebsocial version, does not show any evidence of hashtags on the w3csocial version: https://w3c.social/@tantek.com@tantek.com/116713150838915191

[snarfed] I can confirm that the hashtag updates made it to indiewebsocial by way of this tag stream: https://indieweb.social/tags/dailyroutines (my first post of the recent three is on top there) and this tag stream https://indieweb.social/tags/prioritization which shows posts 2-3 of my recent three, most importantly 2 is the one that was updated)

[tantek]
why update are not showing up on w3csocial is unclear. both servers are running Mastodon v4.5.11
#
[tantek]
another data point: updates are not showing up in Mastodon.social either https://mastodon.social/tags/dailyroutines (top post is older than mine, no sign of my posts), and similarly the prioritization tag page https://mastodon.social/tags/prioritization is not showing my post 2 that was updated, and that server is running v4.6.0-nightly.2026-06-10
#
[tantek]
same tag pages also not showing updates on http://mastodon.online which is also on same nightly build as .social
#
[tantek]
same not showing updates on http://fosstodon.org running Mastodon v4.5.11 (but is showing latest post, as a control)
#
[tantek]
[snarfed] summary: only 1/5. i.e. indieweb.social appears the be the only server updating posts via BridgyFed. 4 others (w3c.social, mastodon.social, http://mastodon.online, http://fosstodon.org) do not. curious if you can find any *other* servers (besides indieweb.social) that are showing updates.

[snarfed] Did Bridgy Fed clear out a backlog or something today? I just got a flood of Webmentions for Instagram likes to a post I wrote in 2021.
#
[capjamesg]
Or I guess regular Bridgy.
#
[capjamesg]
It is so long since I had the Instagram thing set up.

#
[snarfed]
hah, definitely not, at least that I know of
#
[snarfed]
do you still have the Bridgy browser extension installed and set up?
#
[snarfed]
lol ok. could be some rogue third party thing then
#
[capjamesg]
aaronpk did http://webmention.io do something today?
#
[capjamesg]
I can’t figure out why I got this rush of mentions from 2021 again today.
#
[capjamesg]
Some of the accounts aren’t even on IG anymore so it doesn’t feel like these could be resends.
#
[snarfed]
[tantek] thanks for all the details. I remember looking at this with others here a while back, and the conclusion was that it wasn't clear whether or how Mastodon tag feeds worked, and why they weren't in this case. I wouldn't use them on their own to debug anything like whether Bridgy Fed is successfully sending AP updates
#
[tantek]
In this case they are completely accurate
#
[tantek]
and it's a way to view the posts (or absence thereof) on a specific server, without trying to fake a permalink on that server or having to login to that server
#
[snarfed]
you can search for yourself, then open your profile, which shows all of your posts that the server knows about
#
[snarfed]
again, when we debugged this a while back, the conclusion was that BF sent activities for posts with hashtas to inboxes on multiple instances', and got HTTP 202 responses, but those posts never appeared in those tag feeds
#
[snarfed]
so, at that time at least, our experience was that they were not accurate
#
[tantek]
right, I do that search for yourself trick like that too
#
[tantek]
in the instance of w3c.social for example, the *content* updates to the previous posts are not showing up either
#
[snarfed]
yes. that, I trust more
#
[tantek]
like it's only displaying the first time it saw the post "create", no "update"
#
[snarfed]
oh really? that's different then, if no hashtags are involved, that would definitely be a bug
#
[tantek]
the hashtags are in my content so they should be showing up visibly in the post permalink
#
[tantek]
like they should be showing up in the new content
#
[tantek]
regardless of tag feeds
#
[tantek]
same problem on Mastodon.social. posts were not updated
#
[snarfed]
ok! yeah if you confirmed outside of tag feeds, then agreed. sorry! I'll look
#
[tantek]
steps are: 1. publish a post and federate with BridgyFed, 2. edit post to add hashtags inside post content at the end of the post, referderate with BridgyFed, 3. see that the posts are not updated in multiple Mastodon servers
#
[tantek]
do some Mastodon servers have a "timeout" where they stop accepting updates to posts like after a day?
#
[snarfed]
not that I know of at least
#
[tantek]
interesting that indieweb.social is the only server I/we can find that got / shows all the updates
#
[snarfed]
yeah that's especially odd, if some instances are working but not all
#
[snarfed]
huh. I can reproduce it, *including* on indieweb.social, it didn't get my update either
#
[snarfed]
ah fediverse, never change
#
[snarfed]
[tantek] which post of yours are you talking about that got updated on indieweb.social but not the others?
#
[tantek]
The most recent three posts on my site.
#
[tantek]
EXCEPT the very most recent post I made I changed one word and that update did make it thru to every server I checked
#
[tantek]
In that case only the change was made in <24h after create. Which is why I asked if Mastodon servers have some config for an edits/updates timeout
#
[tantek]
The very most recent three posts not counting responses (e.g. that thumbs up to a GH issue)
#
[tantek]
wow fascinating, potentially two different bugs
[sockblaster] joined the channel
#
[snarfed]
yeah. all other networks we work with have explicit create/update operations, but web doesn't, so we detect whether content and some other properties changed since we last delivered it, but we have other paths that potentially refetch and store web pages, which can trip up that logic
#
[snarfed]
(I _think_. not sure yet)

Is there any chance of getting this merged: https://github.com/w3c/Micropub/pull/125 I'd be able to delete my last GitHub repo after that. If not, I'd delete it immediately.

[Sophia_wood] I just checked the ebird APIs to see if I could pull my own observations regularly into my website, but it seems the API doesn't support querying an individual (mostly by location or bird). So I think my only option is a periodic email export process which sounds clunky.
#
[aciccarello]
The export is pretty simple to use though. It's a CSV with a row per species/checklist combo. I could probably do my own aggregation which would be pretty interesting.
