[capjamesg]: You might also want to look into the u-audio in your podcast, MF2 parsing doesn't fetch the audio URL: https://xray.p3k.app/parse?url=https%3A%2F%2Fweb-weaving.jamesg.blog%2F5&pretty=true
#
[capjamesg]
Oooh yeah I don’t put the u-audio on the home page.

I don't know if this is too random for the dev channel, but here goes. I have a few clients who sort of let their email services run away with them, and they have a load of old email addresses they no longer actively use, but keep paying for because they never migrated, or they don't want to migrate for some reason, but they aren't wanting to receive new email. So I've set up a sort of email-archive variant of Dovecot with optional
#
[rose]
Roundmail for viewing said emails, and integrated imapsync so it can all be moved to and from a real email account. I was wondering if it's worth sharing on github or just not very useful: people who need it probably can't implement it, people who can implement it probably don't need it....
#
[capjamesg]
I don’t add the audio to the home page because the individual pages have richer context.
#
[capjamesg]
One way I get around this on my personal site is to have https://jamesg.blog/longform-feed which is a h-feed that contains all of my post contents.
#
[capjamesg]
I could do something similar here I suppose.

[capjamesg]: The articles pages themselves have the u-url in the <audio> instead of <source> i mean
#
[rose]
....Incidentally, I approve of not putting the audio on the home page. Even when going to a site about a podcast/music/etc., I prefer to choose when I download and listen to stuff.
#
[capjamesg]
Ooops my bad.
#
[capjamesg]
I have just pushed a fix.
#
[capjamesg]
Let me know if it looks good now!

I have felt a similar tension too in that something being open source doesn’t necessarily mean people can use it.
#
ZodiacalComet
[Rose]: I would say to publish it even if you don't know that, you never know when someone stumbles upon it and makes their life easier
#
[capjamesg]
I think that’s good advice ^^
#
[rose]
No worries James, I sort of came in randomly and interrupted.
#
[capjamesg]
No worries! Because we don’t have threads here this happens all the time 😄
#
[rose]
And yeah that's also the same tension I have. Like, I have so many crazy, crazy useful scripts... but they are useful *to me*. 😄
#
[rose]
As in, not necessarily everyone else. But yeah like you said Comet - never know who might find it useful.
#
[capjamesg]
I don’t think a lot of my open source projects get attention but I am glad they are out there both for personal reference and in case any of the code would be helpful to someone.
#
[rose]
This is a weird one cos it's something I'd never need: I'd just sort out my syncing straight away. No need for more. But god, my clients, why do they all end up paying hundreds a year for email accounts they stopped using?! 😄
#
ZodiacalComet
[capjamesg]: Looking good in XRay and in mf2py too btw
#
[capjamesg]
Yayy! ZodiacalComet++ thank you!
#
[capjamesg]
Are you working on a project that involves feeds / audio?
#
[rose]
then when I say let's fix it, they are reluctant and feel they first need to go through the data. Well, maybe a tool to download things, but keep things browsable and transferrable, would be good for them...
#
[rose]
btw James (tagging cos of you mentioning you have multiple OS projects): What level of handholding do you do with your OS project instructions? I'm never quite sure when it comes to supporting stuff like nginx config settings. But I guess I can include my own as an example for people to look at for inspiration...
#
ZodiacalComet
[Rose]: The paying a lot for something you don't use is crazy to me, how is that possible?
#
[capjamesg]
That’s a great question. It depends on the project. For some I’ll only add the notes I would need to get the project up and running, but if I think others may want to use the software I will write full installation and setup instructions.
#
[rose]
Comet - it's freelancers. I'm also a freelance translator and copywriter, so my first clients after getting permission to offer tech services as a freelancer ended up being friends in those professions.
#
[rose]
People justify a lot if they think they need it for their business. Even if they don't.
#
[capjamesg]
https://github.com/capjamesg/jamesql I think shows the kind of format I like to use for a big project.
#
[rose]
There are also evil hosts like IONOS who constantly upsell and automatically add services people don't need.
#
[capjamesg]
I’ll do intro, sometimes a demo video, installation, quickstart, and usage instructions.
#
[capjamesg]
That project in particular took me months though so it’s on the more extreme end. Most of the time the README is a couple of hundred words max.
#
[rose]
Whaaaa you're very pro about it, James!
#
[capjamesg]
I used to maintain technical documentation at work so I kind of love the docs part of a project 😂
#
[rose]
nice project. me - I'm the "let's just throw it together with json and js" type.
#
[capjamesg]
I was trying to find a more recent example but most of my projects lately have been single HTML files with some JS 😂
#
[capjamesg]
The simpler, the better 😂
#
[rose]
Buuuut... that's a point. This thing I am doing for a larger client - I can offer more extensive documentation and instruction videos as an add on, if they wanna pay for it, actually.
#
[capjamesg]
Absolutely.
#
[capjamesg]
I always appreciate when someone hands off a project with clear docs so I can pick it up without losing all the context.
#
[rose]
Basically a tool to present characteristics about a range of products with weird and wonderful characteristics, with some sorting where appropriate. I've proposed JSON for efficiency and maintainability - but instructions so they don't have to go through their IT team (which is a bit slow) each time might be an option...
#
[rose]
I think the plan here was to hand it off to their IT - so not really any major docs provided, just notes. But with more details, it might be possible for marketing people to manage.
#
[rose]
You've got me thinking there. 😄 But yeah, I love a good JSON. JameSQL looks like a cool project - has it taken off at all?
#
[capjamesg]
It has one user: me 😂
#
[capjamesg]
It works well for blog-size data but nothing bigger, and there’s a technical limitation that would take way too long for me to address.
#
[capjamesg]
With that said I’m happy!
#
[rose]
It's a cool project. 🙂
#
[capjamesg]
Thank you!
#
[rose]
I mean, I did go further with instructions with my biggest project, but I ended up being more comfortable away from Github for that content. Again, my bias comes into play - I'm a copywriter/content designer specialised in tech, too, so felt more comfortable when I could control the formats. Susty Icons - an icon set. So I have a page about https://sustyicons.com/understand-the-ui/, and another about
#
[rose]
It's less technical than yours though - kind of a different audience.
#
[rose]
Videos are a good idea for the more technical projects.
#
[capjamesg]
I agree that it’s not ideal for many projects to have all their docs on GitHub.
#
[capjamesg]
I have seen projects with only technical setup instructions on GitHub but most of their content on a website.
#
[capjamesg]
And thanks for sharing Susty Icons again! I have seen this before but I haven’t used it in a project yet.
#
[capjamesg]
I love the “green energy flower solid” icon.
#
[rose]
I think it depends a bit on the complexity of the project, and the best way to actually deliver the contents...
#
[rose]
But when I need to clone a project or copy docker compose instructions or similar, clearly laid out and non-distracting Github is good.
#
[rose]
I found a website with all those adjustable settings is more appropriate for something that is *literally designed to be flexible and used in web design and development*.
#
[rose]
The green energy flower ones are some of my own favourites! That and the solid snail.
#
[rose]
Some projects suffer for not having the clearest instructions/websites - it's not always better. I tell a lot of people to try out https://www.ventoy.net/en/index.html, but have to sort of persuade them to not judge the tool by the website.

[Rose] if you can summarize your email portability tips in prose, no need for GitHub, blog it instead, even if It’s something you've only helped a few people with
#
[tantek]
Like my recent post about adding more site-specific search engines, there was no need for GitHub so no repo etc. not every helpful thing fits into an open source shaped hole
#
[rose]
Thanks for that, [tantek]. Yeah, I think the other problem is that I tend to keep tinkering and tinkering to the point it's not so "portable". What WAS a simple solution has evolved into a bit more - using Dovecot and imapsync for the most useful aspects, but also Roundcube for browsing and cleaning up the archive, plus Authelia to give Roundcube the 2FA it naturally lacks... And suddenly it's more complex.

Right? So often I make something small and useful and think oh I should share this on GitHub after. But by the time I am done messing with it, it's so tailored to my own system it'd be hard to recommend to others without simultaneously committing to provide support for a few far more complex packags I've integrated…

Wait, I realise there is a short tip to be given here: Authelia is a reaaaally nice FOSS 2FA enabler for any static website or lightweight service that doesn't have 2FA built in. It can also use passkeys. It wasn't tooooo hard to set up and it’s very lightweight. Good for anything when you want a bit more security than basics http auth.
#
aaronpk
wonder what it would take to add indieauth support to it
#
[rose]
This is first-party anyway - it doesn't integrate with Google, GitHub or whatever.

#
[rose]
Ah you mean as a supplement rather than replacement… yeah, that'd be cool.
#
aaronpk
i mean having it _be_ an indieauth server
#
[rose]
Yeahhh I get you now. It's not far off. In my head I was going back to why I chose it over alternatives - others were heavier and required using a third party like Google or whatever.
#
[rose]
It's very lightweight btw.
#
aaronpk
i might try deploying it at home, i need a better solution for stuff running out of my house. right now i'm just using gitea and an nginx reverse proxy
#
[rose]
Here. My server is 8 core 16 gb, cheapest Hetzner type. I've included the stats for Nextcloud for comparison. Plus the other containers I set up today (note that dovecot and roundcube are being used for archiving, so this is lower use than normal).
#
[rose]
Authelia needs a bit of configuring and a subdomain. And it can use just text files for verification, which is fine if you never grant anyone else access. I think my use case will be secure stuff I might want to share with others. Less secure, http auth. Ultra secure, could use headscale… or tailscale! I should probably switch to headscale but that's a whole thing.
