*catching up* - I use Jellyfin and Nginx, not the proxy manager, @WinnerWind....
#
[rose]
RE: Static IP addresses, I think there is a way, but the best practice is to not rely on IP addresses but docker names or ports, when applicable. I personally use ports for proxy_pass - it may be because I also found that easiest, less crashy.

sorry still catching up on the thread - and yeah pcarrier said the same thing. But basically the thing to remember is you don't need everything to be on port 80 on the host - you just need to map it to port 80 in that container... You don't expose things directly to the internet.
#
[rose]
So to give an example... @WinnerWind -
#
[rose]
`root@cloudword:/srv/it-tools# cat docker-compose.yml`
#
[rose]
`it-tools:`
#
[rose]
`services:`
#
[rose]
`image: 'corentinth/it-tools:latest'`
#
[rose]
`ports:`
#
[rose]
`- '127.0.0.1:8085:80'`
#
[rose]
`restart: unless-stopped`
#
[rose]
`container_name: it-tools`
#
[rose]
```root@cloudword:/etc/nginx/sites-available# cat http://tools.codewordcreative.com
#
[rose]
server {
#
[rose]
listen [::]:443 ssl;
#
[rose]
http2 on;
#
[rose]
listen 443 ssl;
#
[rose]
listen 443 quic;
#
[rose]
listen [::]:443 quic;
#
[rose]
http3 on;
#
[rose]
add_header Alt-Svc 'h3=":443"; ma=86400';
#
[rose]
# include /etc/nginx/snippets/block-sensitive-files.conf; (these are my custom block scripts)
#
[rose]
# include /etc/nginx/snippets/compression-base.conf; (and this is for brotli)
#
[rose]
location / {
#
[rose]
proxy_set_header Host $host;
#
[rose]
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
#
[rose]
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
#
[rose]
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
#
[rose]
I have a general separate block for port 80 redirects, so that's why that's not in there.
#
[rose]
So my personal IP address issue only crops up in one scenario, but it's the subnet for Nextcloud and its interaction with Collabora - I resolved it by allowing everything on the internal subnet so it never breaks.
#
[tantek]
[schmarty] hahaha brilliant. Needs to be an alternate theme / style sheet.
A random trend I've observed, and sort of wondering what others think:
#
[rose]
• I see in some web dev groups, a lot of people are getting AI to make sites in Astro. For sustainability, tbh, this is probably a net gain all round, despite the AI use... provided the resultant assets are also optimised...
#
[rose]
• But... Why do all these sites look the same? I thought it was cos of AI, but so many of the Astro templates look similar...
#
[rose]
(Loqi told me this should move here - I thought it may be general enough for indieweb)
#
[rose]
I was exploring other SSGs but tbh sort of happy with Hugo from my initial experiments.
#
[schmarty]
anecdotally i've noticed that a lot of LLM-generated sites look the same in general. LLM-generated stuff tends to regress to an average, so they're probably reproducing the most common examples in the training data. common template sites, copy-pasted Tailwind styles. slop in / slop out. 😅
#
[rose]
the templates... ahhhh. yes, the templates themselves in Astro are samey, so that makes sense. But then I wonder why the Astro sites are all so similar.
#
[rose]
sorry, the templates.
#
[schmarty]
i'd guess some combination of who curates those templates and who submits the templates and their various goals, haha
#
[schmarty]
for example, https://astro.build/themes/ says "Professional themes designed and developed by our sponsors"
#
[schmarty]
so i'd guess that a lot of these themes are very low-effort ways for sponsors to advertise their own services 🫠
#
[rose]
Yeah, and I guess that's why some are similar... nore chance of being seen!
#
[rose]
for example, this one is nice - very lightweight - but oh that colour scheme and gradient design is everywhere.
#
[rose]
I mean, spot the difference?!
#
[schmarty]
a collective loss of design imagination :}
#
[rose]
It's funny. The colour reminds me a bit of a certain shade of nail polish that EVERYONE had when I was maybe 12-14.
A lot of it comes down to the fact that you have developers “designing” websites now, and since they don’t know how/what makes good design, they leave it up to AI, or just copy and existing websites style
#
tdrayson
You also have the complete opposite end of the spectrum with Anthropic’s Claude “design” style
#
tdrayson
Good design comes with the little details. You can tell who has spent even a fraction of time on the design, since you as a person will have some sort of opinion
#
[schmarty]
sounds like the Astro theming community needs more brave souls willing to mine the past https://aesthetics.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Frutiger_Family
#
[capjamesg]
I love the Frutiger Aero aesthetic.
#
[capjamesg]
Windows Vista was the best operating system.
#
[schmarty]
capjamesg: i'm down a rabbit hole looking for started templates for frutiger sites. there's a lot of good collected inspiration but not a lot of starters that i'm seeing.
Got RSS feeds working :)) fully automated too. https://x0.at/JCsX.png
WinnerWind++ nice work!
thanks! it outputs rss AND atom at the same time
finally, an end to the content syndication wars :P
The designs looks the same problem reminds of when people complained Wordpress sites all look the same or had a certain look
#
[tantek]
Or perhaps it's the LLM equivalent of the nanotech dystopia problem, instead of grey goo we get grey slop!
#
ZodiacalComet
[Rose] That would make a pretty funny Who Wants To Be A Millionaire style game: "Which of those is the template X?"
#
ZodiacalComet
And cheers for getting your feeds set up, WinnerWind!
#
[rose]
[tantek] I feel like... I, too, am guilty of sticking to patterns that I know work, especially in terms of SEO. But what bugs me immensely about these sites is that you also see the same accessibility (and therefore conversion!!!) failings over and over again.
#
[rose]
Centre-aligned text just does not convert as well - as well as being poor on accessibility. But all these AI-driven layouts have multi-line centred text headlines
#
[rose]
@ZodiacalComet - You jest, but my friend Nick seems to be able to recognise themes used by others even though he doesn't use themes himself! 😄
#
[rose]
Themes and templates I should say.
#
[tantek]
I suspect (haven't tried myself) that those adept with prompting eg Claude may be able to ask it to find accessibility problems in site code and then ask it to fix them and review the fixes
#
ZodiacalComet
The thing is knowing about them and explicitly prompting for it
#
ZodiacalComet
[Rose] crazy
#
[rose]
@ZodiacalComet - that's the point. With AI's confidence, you will have to do the spotting yourself.
#
WinnerWind
ZodiacalComet: thank you!
#
[rose]
lmao I am browsing through and keep finding more
#
WinnerWind
(adding my two cents) those kind of themes LOOK cool but they get old really fast. i think that such a vibe doesn't really fit the indieweb, personally. To me, the indie web is about being uniquely you on the internet, and such themes just look like every other page....
#
WinnerWind
if you like using them, who's to stop ya :P
#
[rose]
Yeah... I mean, like many on here, I also do stuff for clients. And I find myself sometimes being compared to company websites or indeed agencies with these off-the-shelf themes. But they do look so samey.
#
[rose]
I feel like... even if it's client work, I still want it to feel individual.
WinnerWind
[Rose]: i think your certificate expired on your website
#
[rose]
oh which one? I might have taken it offline in the meantime.:D
#
that's not me?
#
oh, my bad! i saw it in Chat Names and i though it was you
who is [Rose]
#
Loqi
Rosemary Orchard is a developer at the Technical University of Vienna, and eats entirely too much chocolate https://indieweb.org/User:Rosemaryorchard.com
#
[rose]
lol I see may need to use a different handle..
#
[rose]
We can tag her actually.
#
[rose]
[Rose] - Your certificate needs renewing!
#
WinnerWind
on my side it looks like you tagged yourself, haha
#
[rose]
If you hover, though, you can see it's a different Rose.
#
WinnerWind
can't hover on IRC, unfortunately ^_^`
#
[rose]
Ahh. I'm on Slack.
#
WinnerWind
yup, can see that :)
#
doesnm
slack doesn't like my country
#
WinnerWind
anyway, on the subject of themes, many of them look samey but i guess that's because its much easier to reuse many of the components instead of starting from scratch every time
#
[rose]
Off-topic, but my husband is using a plugin USB fan and I swear every few minutes I notice it and panic that I have some background process using resources and triggering the fan.
#
[rose]
And yeah, I guess so re: the reused components, but it's also the colour schemes, and the bloody centred text.
#
WinnerWind
the centered text makes sense in some use cases, but it does become annoying when it's everywhere
#
[rose]
It's not very good for usability, especially more than one line
#
WinnerWind
how come?
#
[rose]
A friend who uses text zoom has trouble with it - she has to play "find the titles"
#
[rose]
and then when she's on the next line, it's unclear where that will start.
