stillawakeat3am I'm thinking of putting together a static hosting site similar to neocities and nekoweb, but with a few differences:
#
IWDiscord <stillawakeat3am>
#
stillawakeat3am 2) Less oriented towards a younger audience and more toward people who want their own website but would prefer to build within a community as it is difficult to be seen in current search engines
#
stillawakeat3am Does anyone have some thoughts on this, or other things they would like to see in a project like this? I don't want to build something nobody else would want to use.
#
stillawakeat3am 1) A strong social communication layer which allows the community to connect within the platform itself, rather than needing to create third party spaces in reddit or discord

osteophage stillawakeat3am[d]: Can you say more about what you mean by a social communication layer?

#
stillawakeat3am A set of ways people reach, follow, and talk to each other, where an individual's own domain is their identity. The conversations happen over open federated protocols (Matrix primarily).
#
stillawakeat3am Neocities already has some of this. I want to take it a bit further though to include rooms and discussion threads and so on. Right now I'm pretty vague on details and just playing with the ideas

osteophage That sounds pretty ambitious. I'm always curious about little alternative social projects like that (longstanding interest of mine), but it sounds like a much bigger undertaking than just a static web host.
#
stillawakeat3am it is very ambitious - I can pull it off, but my fear is ending up with something nobody is that interested in using after a significant amount of time developing it
#
osteophage I have more thoughts but would need some time to organize them. Are you planning to put up any kind of interest check post?
#
stillawakeat3am [tantek]: good point
#
stillawakeat3am osteophage[d]: I'm keeping it informal for now, but yes, if this goes further

WinnerWind stillawakeat3am: the biggest problem i see with hosting is that it gets pretty expensive after some time. not to mention you would probably be liable for the content people make on your hosting platform and will be hammered by bots. but good luck!
#
WinnerWind id say to start small. we already have neocities, why not work only on the unique aspect that you want to introduce and later add the hosting things? that's how i'd go tbh
