ruecharli any ideas on how i might go about pixelating a whole font
#
ruecharli theres this one font i really like and would love to use in my site but i wish it was pixelated, with like a 48px height for one of my heading styles
#
ruecharli would it be best to use some software to just make the font myself? as its for headings i really wont need any fancy characters, so maybe i should
#
[capjamesg] You may want to look for fonts that have been specifically designed as pixel fonts, like the ones on https://fonts.google.com/?query=pixel.

ruecharli so i started making it
#
ruecharli this is going to take a while.... ive been doing it for over an hour and ive only done uppercase A through M
#
fafau06 ruecharli: this is usually my go-to for pixel fonts, hopefully you can find something a bit similar to what you want there
#
ruecharli i appreciate this. do you happen to have any resources that will allow me to search by size? i need something around 48 pixels tall
lavandula, ax562, cotsuka and Tiffany joined the channel
#
fafau06 that is unfortunately a *very* uncommon size for a pixel fonts, since pixel fonts at those size are practically indistinguishable from regular fonts with anti-aliasing turned off
#
IWDiscord <fafau06>
#
fafau06 that said there are some relic of bitmap fonts around that size, but since it's bitmap you'll have to convert these first into a proper font format first (ttf/otf)

#
ruecharli yeah :( seeing as my whole page is pixel art, it would just look wrong if even the large text is anti aliased
#
ruecharli i'll take a look at the link
#
ruecharli ooh helpful!
#
ruecharli thank you!
#
fafau06 yww^^
#
fafau06 ruecharli: that's so interestingg i wanna make my web be pixel art based too but im still on the edge about that.... can i see yours whenever you're done/comfortable sharing?^

[Trevor_Morris] I recently read this about pixel fonts: https://dithernaut.com/posts/pixel-scaling/
[Trevor_Morris] and ax562 joined the channel
#
fafau06 that was the thing with fonts back then yeah; every size, every weight, every variation, needs their own separate file, thus a font file can quickly bloat out in storage since you have to store so many of them.
#
fafau06 i didn't think anyone would reuse the same technique again now but glad i'm proven wrong.... tho my browser really did not like the font displayed on that web (there were splits in the glyphs, not sure why)
#
[Trevor_Morris] Well, the entire article describes how you can't just scale pixels and still have a pixel style (art or font). 🤷

ruecharli sorry, not sure how to mention someone
#
ruecharli to fafau - of course! it is very painful and i am still suffering with anti aliasing (not working on firefox??) but it is fun

ruecharli this small pixel font is mostly fine, but none of the larger ones work. oh, and, it is vertically misaligned by half a pixel on some browsers. WHY https://lounge.zomboid.pro/uploads/c8faf67356243e08/image.png

#
ruecharli yeah, im going to have to let that one go. but im also having lots of issues with getting the font size right. it needs to scale with the rest of the site, but if i had a 10px tall font for example and wanted to scale it to an image with a height that represents 20px, making the font size half of that images height doesnt work. it worked for the
#
ruecharli small font with a line height of 8 pixels, like 8/(parent height)*100cqi, but it isnt working for the bigger fonts !! still anti-aliasing and still too big or small! agdskhjlkfdjs
#
ruecharli parent height in this case is how many pixels the parent represents, not necessarily the amount of pixels the image takes up on a screen or the actual size of the image
#
ruecharli because it all gets scaled up, see
#
ruecharli everything feels very hostile to pixel art lol

#
ruecharli yeah as the container might be zoomed in and the container is the background
#
ruecharli which is pixel art

[capjamesg] I now have a way to fully sync the version of my blog on my server with my local computer.
#
[capjamesg] I was thinking about moving away from Ghost back to using the CLI to publish, but I don’t think I can go back to VSCodium for publishing blog posts.
#
[capjamesg] There are too many points of friction.
#
[capjamesg] At least now I have a good backup system!

[capjamesg] If I had a pretty local publishing UI I wouldn’t need Ghost.

[capjamesg] I would love a lightweight CMS that doesn’t require a database.
#
gRegor [capjamesg]: have you looked at https://11tycms.com/ ?
#
[capjamesg] Yeah. Ghost is a great piece of software but it is really ideal if you are going to use it for your whole site. My use case was mainly as a “headless” CMS, which ended up having a few complexities that aren’t ideal.
#
[capjamesg] gRegor I already have my site generation working so I’m not keen on adding anything 😭
#
[capjamesg] I used to have https://playground.jamesg.blog/create.html when I used GitHub, which generated a markdown file that I could publish.
#
[capjamesg] Interesting. I’ll take a look!
