I am using Sveltia CMS
#
lesleylai
what is Sveltia
#
Loqi
Sveltia is a Git-based headless CMS used by a few folks in the indieweb community https://indieweb.org/Sveltia

what is Littlelink
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "Littlelink" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "Littlelink is ____", a sentence describing the term)

What do http://fed.brid.gy users do to syndicate replies to a website? Only a reply to a Bluesky post shows up in my Bluesky feed (same for Fedi). Do you do something extra to syndicate a post that is a reply to a blog post? Or do you just don't show it on your Bluesky or Fedi timeline?
#
doesnm
[niklasfyi]: not sure about fed.brid.gy but default brid.gy sends webmentions which you can show as replies to your post

I was takling about the other way. Showing webmentions on my website works. I want to syndicate a post that I made on my page to Bluesky or Fedi. But http://fed.brid.gy only syndicates replies to the network they correspond to.
#
doesnm
you need to include link to fed.brid.gy or having rss IIRC

tdrayson, I agree it's dev related. I'd love to hear more about your setup and how it all works. Great content for a blog post.
#
tdrayson
Yeah I need to get an article or colophon written up on how its all setup
#
[Trevor_Morris]
I see you're using Inertia, so it's Laravel based? And Tailwind.
#
tdrayson
Yeah Laravel backend with Tailwind and VueJS on the frontend with SSR to support microformats etc.
#
[Trevor_Morris]
Nice. I'm using Blade. My site has migrated through many versions, even from FuelPHP back in the day.
#
[Trevor_Morris]
Just noticed this, I think this link is going to the wrong place. I love the popovers, too.
#
tdrayson
Ooops! good catch
#
tdrayson
Fixed 😄
#
tdrayson
I migrated this site from WordPress hahah. been really enjoying Laravel recently. pretty nice dev experience as well
#
tdrayson
the popovers where based on the microlink api. It includes images when the page has a cover photo too

I love the data, it mirrors at lot of the data I am capturing (I'd love to know which bits inspired you), but your design is better.
#
[Trevor_Morris]
It's given me a few ideas – I like the "drawing" of the map on activity pages.
#
tdrayson
your photos on the interactive map, your tagged "characters", not built yet, but I love the idea and want to add it. your heart rate, elevation charts. I also took inspiration from your activity rings, I didn't track them originally
#
tdrayson
The activity drawing I actually took from Strava 😅
#
tdrayson
Feel free to take any ideas. If you do implement anything do ping me, I’d love to see
#
[Trevor_Morris]
The photos on my map was inspired by Strava. I'd had the idea for ages, then an LLM made it easy. Characters is from Chris Glass ( https://chrisglass.com/characters/ ). I built a Web Component for the fitness rings, obviously Apple inspired – https://trovster.github.io/fitness-visualisations/
#
tdrayson
Thats good to know about Chris Glass. Gonna make a note in GH.
#
tdrayson
some of the stuff I built would have taken me decades to figure out. LLM's definitely helped 😄

Yeah, I like a good "Bento Box" but haven't found a fit on my website. They're what Apple uses to highlight new features. Ha, there is a site devoted to them – https://bentogrids.com/
#
tdrayson
you sort of have it with your "bento" style gallery on the homepage. I reckon you could extend that to other components / sections.
#
tdrayson
the only thing I found is due to how compact they are, they're super fiddly to design/build and also making sure they scale

[Trevor_Morris]
Yeah, the landscape / square / portrait can make a lovely looking grid at one specific size, but mobile/tablet designs will suffer, especially if each box is heavily art-directed and designed. Easier to change box sizes if just text, but then they don't have the visual appeal.

anyone have ideas as to how i could make a guestbook work without php support? note that i only need info sent to me, i dont need the users to be able to see other people's entries
lavandula joined the channel
#
thamara_k
I have seen some guestbooks request entries via email
#
ruecharli
oooh how does that work?
#
thamara_k
You just ask people to send you an email (which requires having your email displayed publicly — you may want to create an email address just for this if you go down this route)
#
thamara_k
Do you have a static site?
#
thamara_k
You could also use Webmentions
#
thamara_k
what is guestbook?
#
Loqi
guestbook is a way to allow visitors to your site to leave a comment about the website as a whole, instead of a comment about a specific post https://indieweb.org/guestbook
#
thamara_k
^^ some examples here ruecharli
#
ruecharli
thank you! i would personally prefer not to just give out an email address. i'll look at some examples :p

[niklasfyi] bridgy fed doesn't syndicate replies to other networks unless they're self-replies
#
[snarfed]
since the original post isn't on the other network
#
[niklasfyi]
Any way to „force“ bridgy fed to post it anyway as a „normal“ post?
#
[snarfed]
not right now. we can't translate it as a reply, and it would be awkward to post as a top-level post
#
[snarfed]
I think there's an open issue to allow that though, feel free to find that and follow along

What do people use to compress the size of videos they upload to their site? I have some short (like 30 second) clips I want to post but don't want to blow up my storage.
#
aaronpk
ffmpeg
#
aaronpk
tho i keep meaning to set up an automation to splice up my videos into HLS segments. not super important for a 30 second video, but much more necessary for longer than a few minutes
#
[aciccarello]
Cloudinary has an article on ffmpeg. Might try that

Any suggestions on codecs?
#
[pcarrier]
I'd lean toward AV1 with VP8 as a fallback if you care about licensing (I think you should, otherwise h264 is an even better fallback). refer to https://caniuse.com/?search=vp8 when making choices like this :)
#
[pcarrier]
you can compress _much_ faster through your GPU if you have one (keywords: NVENC for nvidia, VAAPI for Intel and AMD; Vulkan Video is sadly not quite consistent yet, even if it works results are often subpar)
#
[pcarrier]
(keywords are for Linux sorry)

do we have compression/hosting advice in /video ?
iberryboi[d] joined the channel
#
[aciccarello]
Thanks, pcarrier. I probably will go with a well supported codec. I don't want to exclude older apple devices and I don't want to worry about licensing questions.
#
[pcarrier]
if you don't want to offer a "good" codec and a fallback codec, then VP8 is your best bet
