It would be cool to dust off that old issue. I don’t think anything has changed on my end, but I’m still doing a lot with books.

agreed, I'd like to generalize to different media and such

tdrayson[d] James sent me a webmention which you can see here https://thamara.co.uk/notebook/2026/08/lookahead
#
tdrayson
Oh cool! looks good.
#
thamara_k
the code probably isn't relevant because mine is a static Astro site, but just in case you want to take a look https://github.com/thamarakandabada/personal-website/blob/main/src/components/Webmentions.astro
#
tdrayson
btw, one small tip with transitions, always put them on the root selector, never `:hover` or `:focus` or whatever, otherwise it does the jumpy animation when you leave hover.
#
tdrayson
css transitions *
#
thamara_k
tdrayson[d]: thanks! I will fix that
#
tdrayson
so with Astro, does it fetch webmentions from webmention.io at build time or on pageload?
#
thamara_k
On build time
#
thamara_k
I build my site almost every day so it works for me
#
tdrayson
do you cache them locally?
#
thamara_k
(Not that I get loads of webmentions lol)
#
tdrayson
surely thats a lot of api calls?
#
thamara_k
I’m not sure if they’re cached tbh. I copied this wholesale from somewhere, I don’t necessarily understand what it does (not a dev)
#
thamara_k
I’ll try to find the site again
#
tdrayson
I'd perhaps switch to loading them async on page load from webmentions directly or caching the webmentions perhaps to the repo?

Looks like you'd be pinging the site 200 times per build based on the number of entries you have.

Success! For the first time since switching to using Cloudflared instead of port forwarding, I had a power outage and my provider reset my ip address this morning. When power came back on, my hardware rebooted, my VM rebooted itself, everything reconnected itself as soon as it had a live internet connection, and my websites came back online by themselves. My online presence can survive a power loss and/or change of IP address without any

manual intervention. Sweet!
#
[capjamesg]
Oooh that’s cool!
#
[Mike]
I'm pretty pleased. It was an active worry of mine. God forbid I get incapacitated, all anyone needs to know is to connect my server to an ethernet cable with an active internet connection somewhere, and everything will come back online.

Have you written up how it all works?
#
morganwebdev
While I was traveling recently there was a momentary time, for approximately 3 minutes, where I could not find my laptop. It did induce a little panic, but in my rational head I remembered "You have Backblaze in the skies, and external hdd backups at home, the thing is full disk encrypted and lock screened, its safe, your safe, just find it..."
#
morganwebdev
I credit the learning from this group to get my backups all sorted

[Trevor_Morris] I have all the design privately documented but I haven’t written a public article or anything. I’m going to need to though, that’s worth having out there. It’s not terribly complicated, the way this works is pretty much what Cloudflared was designed to do.
#
[Mike]
(Notes for those unfamiliar, that’s cloudflared, the Cloudflare local tunneling daemon, not just the ordinary Cloudflare service. It all works with Cloudflare’s free tier though.)

Could I get some suggestions/feedback. I decided to render the backdrop image from TV shows and movies I watch in the main timeline, which looks great, but I found that when I watch 3 episodes back to back it becomes a bit repetitive. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve it? I didn't render them originally for this reason. Does anyone really care or do I just ignore it lol
