I am interested in embedded programs and potentially extension features that people use to mark content for clipping out for example of a loaded page? Like lets say I wanted to visit a Silo account, but I wanted to clip out the news ticker using some sort of predictable HTML or CSS selector. Like for example Linkedins newsfeed section box, I want to clip this out each time its loaded, but have it visible that something *was* clipped
#
morganwebdev
there, just so I dont forget and thinks something is broken. Is anyone using anything like this?
#
morganwebdev
4 years ago I tried a script manager called "Tamper Monkey" which had little scripts that ran on a page
#
[Mike]
I save things with SingleFile, which to some extent can save just parts of a page, but I think it’s some more manual process than what you’re describing.

Inspired by a topic in #indieweb-random: A lot of what makes or breaks a framework or library (esp oss) is the community that supports it and the community around it. If the values of that community are in conflict with yours or especially with you as a person, seems like a good idea to avoid that framework or library
#
[tantek]
morganwebdev look into user stylesheets which can be used to blank or replace an element on a page on a site that has specific class or ID with a solid color or bg image
#
morganwebdev
I consider myself reasonably proficient for this task, but I dont know much about extensions or what people are using to do stuff potentially like this i.e "Curating" or "Cherry-deleting" websites that you may feel a need to visit but want to change the experience
#
[Mike]
Oh, @morganwebdev, I misunderstood you. I thought you meant clip out, like, save. If you meant block, uBlock Origin lets you set up rules to hide certain selectors, and you can use very complicated selectors, including modifiers like `:has-text(/regex/)`. I also have a very old, sloppy project, a userscript designed to facilitate hiding content by selector or keyword: https://github.com/kupietools/webcooler-userscript

Ive assessed my level of spoons, had a great time reading some docs about user stylesheets, but am immediately drawn to the uBlock Origin feature

Might be worth adding those links to the /YouTube and /LinkedIn pages to help more folks choose their own reading experience accordingly

Mike, I think this is a right-sized task for your commendably plastic brain! The CSS Selectors on this Linkedin Newsfeed element are all randomized machine coded selectors with no semantic meaning, presumably in an intentional effort to avoid copying or selecting or scraping
#
morganwebdev
Im gonna try it myself but maybe you could help with selecting things with CSS that have been obfuscated

spans and make them out of order in the code so you can’t just read them from the DOM. LinkedIn may be doing that as well now.
#
[Mike]
[tantek] I believe I did add the YouTube one to the Wiki’s YouTube page when I first made that post. Can’t recall if I added the LinkedIn one. It’s hard for me to use the wiki from my phone (a lot of weekend days are stay-in-bed days lately while I recuperate, the cast makes everything a pain), but next time I’m back on my laptop I’ll take a look.
#
[Mike]
There is a browser extension called FB Purity that plays whack-a-mole with FB’s tricks and seems to somehow be able to keep up with their new tactics, but I haven’t looked at it to try and figure out how it works, it’s a huge, very complicated extension. Hmmm… Claude Code might be able to figure out how it works.
#
[Mike]
@morganwebdev happy to have a look, but, Yes, now that you mention it, these are older posts and I know for sure Facebook has started using those kinds of complex tactics to obfuscate things so you can’t pick them out them with CSS selectors any more… I actually tried this trick on Facebook just about two weeks ago to try to remove posts with “follow“ in the header, and they now break every single letter of identifiable tags into sepa

[Mike] more than fair. Captured it in the page (my summary can use improvement) for now so we don't forget

I've been using nested dl elements to describe things like my keyboard builds, but a friend asked why not use subsections and headings. My answer is because the information is fundamentally just a bunch of key-value pairs. I'm wondering if it's good/bad practice to "flatten" such lists or not? Any relevant resources re: this subject?
#
wturrell
probably the kind of thing only you can answer really, everyone's content is different. DLs would be my choice for that too I think, if it feels like a key/value pair or brief FAQ. If you find yourself writing a few paragraphs on every keyboard, then it starts to justify headings etc. - but you could just link out from your list to separate pages as appropriate.

yeah, i already have a section and heading for each keyboard but then the "metadata" so to speak is a dl. but it's nested such that you can obtain for example "Key switches" -> "Bottom-out force" -> "60g"
#
trwnh
the suggestion was that "key switches" become a subsection and subheading
#
trwnh
My intuition is that I shouldn't use headings and sections that aren't really part of the page structure or "landmarks"... is it?

[tantek]: i'd change it into a two-column table with date/time on the left and text on the right

trwnh: I was looking around for the actual page, but… one thing that sometimes helps is turning CSS off and seeing if the structure makes sense without it. Think about what a screen-reader users might want too, maybe?

I recently had a blog post with common questions `<dt>` and replies `<dd>` and it worked well (well worked better when I added CSS for clarity. Then updating my category page with filters the listing of the two filter sections really fit the `<dl>` structure by the label in the “dt” and the filter option in “dd” laid out linearly worked well.

I have long loved definition lists, but oddly I have not used them much in recent years.

trwnh I am a fan of DL DT DD for key value pairs. Simpler than table markup
#
[tantek]
WinnerWind I lost context for what you are talking about for a two column table
#
WinnerWind
[tantek]: oh boy i cant find it
#
WinnerWind
you were talking about a poster
#
WinnerWind
it had timings of what i remmeber to be concerts

[tantek]
Oh right the afters for Portola
#
[tantek]
There's at least three data items. Datetime, venue, band

i'd format it as a two column table with the first column being date time, the second column being something like band (venue) or band @ venue
#
WinnerWind
the grid format just looks ugly
#
WinnerWind
hard to skim over
#
[tantek]
I’m thinking more about the presentation really like I prefer time on the x-axis and venue (roughly geographically) on the y-axis
#
[tantek]
Or vice versa
#
[tantek]
Or maybe copying the axes/design from the primary Portola set times display

Does anyone organise their CSS stylesheet contents into categories, like having a section for headings, links, tables, etc.?
#
[capjamesg]
I’m trying to figure out how to make my stylesheet more navigable.

Mine are "organised" into sections, eg site, nav and type blog, activities, photos

Then import the styles all into app.css

I organise mine into main areas, although caveat I use tailwind for most of the styling.

What CSS do you need, you use Tailwind inline, don't you?

[capjamesg] before I update my PHP to 8.x my dev test pages had timers in them, but what I was using for it went back to early 5.x or 3.x. and it stopped working in version 7. I quickly added the query and page build tests, and regular blog page is around .01 and the category page with filters was around .03. The issues weren’t code related.
#
[social]
My blog post setup I ran in 2000 on work test environment and it could handle 100k builds per hour with no noticeable difference from static HTML. My links page, which is static is often slower than my regular blog page these days with the image for bullet page build often making things slow.
#
[social]
I need to take the timer I ran the other day on a secondary lab page build and add it to a regular build.
#

For CSS I normally setup type and colors up front, and then style for inline elements. Then I add page structures and modifications of elements that are related to page structures. Keeping things together, need, and commented helps sanity.
#
[social]
I have some old legacy styles for random old pages still around. I also have CSS for a site that isn’t mine, but I loved what they did and occasionally I lean on it in pages as a test.
#
[social]
My last couple of site modifications I was broke a lot of the CSS stylesheet layout as some odd cascading was interfering with styles and I was moving additions up and down the structure. I need a serious clean-up and layout clean-up of my stylesheet.
