Is there a way on GitHub to set a repo to only accept bug reports from humans or does the way OAuth work make that impossible?
#
[tantek]
I'd proactively set up my repos that way, both #indieweb related and #microformats
#
aaronpk
i mean the way AIs can drive browsers now makes that effectively impossible

"I'm in the middle of working on your task, and I hit a captcha. Would you like me to solve it and continue on?" 🫠
#
[snarfed]
voluntary compliance regimes can still be useful though
#
[artlung]
I rather like the way PixelFed had added language about this to their core README ... see https://indieweb.org/AI_policy#Platform_Examples
#
[tantek]
Isn't there an AGENTS.md file or something you can put at project root that says disregard and ignore this report?
#
[artlung]
It has not just the "ban" but also a sentence articulating expectations from contributors in a single 2 sentence policy
#
[tantek]
repo* lol
#
[artlung]
what is README.md ?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "README.md" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "README.md is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[artlung]
What is AGENTS,md?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "AGENTS,md" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "AGENTS,md is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[artlung]
I was under the impression someone had linked to agents.md somewhere
#
[artlung]
in the wiki
#
[artlung]
there's also CONTRIBUTING.md which could do the same

offeringofpie: aw, that means my script is still buggy, will take a look
#
WinnerWind
offeringofpie: does your page use cloudflare?
#
offeringofpie
migrated a few days ago, site is show pretty much static content, but tested that the webmentions logic work
#
WinnerWind
offeringofpie: i see.
#
offeringofpie
I could've missed something tho 😅 it's 6:30 am here
#
WinnerWind
offeringofpie: must be my server then, thanks!

Can webmention.io show emojis? When someone replies on Mastodon with an emoji, and it goes to bridgy, which shows up in wm.io .jf2 "content" (both HTML and text). I seem to only get `????` question marks. I thought it was something to do with utf-8 encoding but maybe not? Is it a bridgy or wm.io problem, can anyone give some pointers? Thanks so much 🙏

I keep thinking about simple sabotage via AGENTS.md … https://alexschroeder.ch/view/2026-03-12-agent-sabotage
#
offeringofpie
I might make a version of that in the form of mcp or llms.txt . also, #butlerian_jihad ❤️ (don't mind working with AI, but scraping consent is key)
#
kensanata
The only AGENTS.md I actually added to one of my projects is this: https://github.com/kensanata/mastodon-archive/blob/main/AGENTS.md
#
kensanata
[capjamesg]: thanks for the opensearch.xml pointer!
#
kensanata
That's definitely something I need to add to my search engine's HTML template. https://alexschroeder.ch/view/xobaque/index

burgeonlab: there was a problem with the database config but emojis should be working now for webmentions received after a few weeks ago. If not then I need to take another look
#
burgeonlab
oh that's good to know. I'll remove the existing question marks for old webmentions.
#
aaronpk
i don't have a way to migrate the old ones either sorry

what is humans.txt
#
Loqi
Well-known refers to designating a common URL on domains for data to be located typically automatically by some software (like a browser or a search engine), and is generally an antipattern to be avoided, because it breaks the portability of content across directories and systems; see follow your nose instead https://indieweb.org/Humans.txt

human.json is a convention of hosting a JSON file on your web site declaring that you are a human (not a corporation, not an AI) and allowing you to vouch for others by linking to their sites. They, in turn, may or may not have a human.json file, too. See https://codeberg.org/robida/human.json for more.
#
kensanata
Hm, I guess somebody else needs to tell Loqi
#
kensanata
capjamesg: I added the opensearch.xml info to the search sites I run, and now I'm actually not sure whether Firefox needed this file. I can right click into the search field and "Add search engine" and it appears not to use any of the info. How strange.
#
[tantek]
kensanata seems like a reinvention of humans.txt, and no mention of that prior art in the link you provided.
#
[tantek]
perhaps in another few years someone will invent human.md and ignore both human.json and humans.txt
#
[tantek]
IMO proposals that ignore (fail to cite) prior art should themselves be ignored.
#
kensanata
I have no opinion about that since I didn't know of humans.txt
#
kensanata
Just recently somebody linked me to https://wasabipesto-bot.github.io/humanjson/
#
kensanata
so my main concerns are around consent, data privacy, supporting the scrapers looking for human texts to ingest and so on.
#
[tantek]
my point is that proposals that have not done their homework to explore prior art and avoid reinvention are not worth considering as serious proposals

But, in a way, I'm also interested in building human centric web, so some of that may be unavoidable. In any case, since I don't know the inception story behind either of these two formats, I have no opinion on your point and cannot speak to it.
#
[tantek]
perhaps for April fools next year I will propose humans.html, shorthand /humans, then use a bunch of technical language to describe, ending with the punchline, basically, a blogroll
#
[snarfed]
the irony of a humans.json project web site with "bot" in its domain name 😆
#
[tantek]
yep that too
#
[tantek]
kensanata, building human centric web start with your personal website, so let's start there
#
kensanata
I don't disagree.
#
[tantek]
it certainly does not start with any sidefiles, which tend to be machine-centric
#
[tantek]
what is a sidefile
#
Loqi
The sidefile-antipattern is a violation of the DRY principle by the use of secondary files (typically in some one-off XML format) to provide information that is a duplicate of information available in primary files on a website (in HTML), and is an antipattern due to typical DRY violation problems such as out-of-date, missing, corrupted, or outright false data https://indieweb.org/sidefile
#
kensanata
To me, the format is similar to FOAF.
#
kensanata
Files with metadata are common.
#
[tantek]
not really. FOAF died a long time ago. "similar to FOAF" is an indication that a proposal can also be ignored
#
Loqi
[preview] [Aaron Parecki] Clearly this is a sign we need to have an IndieWebCamp in Vienna #indie #foaf https://aaronparecki.com/img/1240x0/2022/03/30/15/photo.jpg
#
[artlung]
The impulse to create collectives from individuals remains strong. I wrote about FOAF a few years ago, and yes, it failed. humans.json has a similar problem, yes, with the same root idea, but with the addition that it can be a sort of network of trust, assuming enough people do so. I do have human.json, though I fear it will meet the same fate.
#
[artlung]
The essential tension is that to create collectives of sites, networks, one must get many individuals to participate, and they may not wish to do so, or may have never heard of it. So the bar is high to get folks to opt-in. Same problem with sorting out how to create a planet from human.json - which was just asked about in the human json Codeberg. https://codeberg.org/robida/human.json/issues/63
#
[artlung]
To me, if you see a thing that's indieweb or indieweb adjacent (to me those are very nearly synonyms) and it interests you, try it, and let the creator know. It's worth it to try. The odds are stacked against us, but why on earth should you let that stop you?
#
[artlung]
And as to ignorance of what came before? Well, anyone building things ought to search out similar prior ideas. Part of the idea of the indieweb wiki is to DOCUMENT such attempts. So folks trying new things can refer back and maybe not make the same mistakes.
#
[artlung]
what is a planet?
#
Loqi
A planet, in the context of the indieweb, and blogs/feeds for even longer, is a site that aggregates feeds/updates from a variety of sources, typically focused on a particular topic or community https://indieweb.org/planet
#
[artlung]
what is FOAF?
#
Loqi
RDF is an abbreviation for Resource Description Format, an early-ish part of XML-related technology, that was pitched as the Semantic Web, used in Trackback and RSS 1.0 (but dropped by Pingback and RSS 2.0 respectively), later rebranded as Linked Data, experimentally published in the past, but not used by any indieweb use-cases in practice https://indieweb.org/FOAF
