The time zone makes it a bit tricky for me. I don’t think I’ll be there remotely.

now that I have another pretty active community using meetable I am considering how to facilitate recurring events better. They have several groups that meet weekly or biweekly, and the organizers are struggling to clone the event every week
#
aaronpk
so i'm curious if folks here have any similar struggles, and if you have any opinions on how you would like to see it solved

If an entity can post operating hours, and can commit to staffing those operating hours across time and space it absolutely is a great feature to have a regular event. But it ought to be able to adapt to a cancellation, or to an adjustment because of a holiday - I recall the generated ics/calendars generated on events sometimes have had events "stuck" despite being cancelled. History of those ought to be findable in chat logs here.
#
[tantek]
Agree with [artlung]. Auto-repeating events have a history of poor ICS interop, especially when exceptions are made (the syntax iş ugly so it's not surprising it's not well supported)
#
aaronpk
i'm not talking about ICS
#
[tantek]
Sure, I also think anything auto-repeating that's non-corporate puts a lot of social / emotional pressure on folks and can burn them out.
#
[tantek]
IMO repeating events are not "humane" design
#
[tantek]
They feel like something corporate that's a holdover from the factory / industrial age
#
[tantek]
aaronpk, maybe there's the possibility of exploring either auto-suggested cloning of events (when the event ends, a button appears to clone it, and it does so by looking at the previous few for a frequency) or maybe even semi-automatic (feels riskier, still requires frequency UI)
#
GWG
Could you compromise and expand cloning to allowing a clone of more than 1 but less than 5 or such?
#
[tantek]
Before going in on repeating events, I'd say there's an opportunity to "connect" events in a "series" that could show up in a list etc without having to resort to tags to fake a series
#
[tantek]
Like cloning an event would add to the series
#
[artlung]
There is nothing essentially inhumane about a recurring event: regular family Donn
#
[artlung]
Dinner at 6pm on a Friday. A Sunday church service always at 1030
#
aaronpk
i have an idea for creating a kind of "event template" that would create actual events on the calendar some weeks in advance
#
[artlung]
It’s about what structure supports that event occurring
#
[tantek]
Daily habits feel different, and church services are still done by someone paid to do them
#
[artlung]
12 step groups are volunteer based and there is probably a meeting occurring right now in your city.
#
[tantek]
It's more about unrecognized unpaid labor, or even not recognizing the additional burden of responsibility
#
[tantek]
That's a good example [artlung]
#
[artlung]
Support groups recognize contributions by volunteers. 100% they do.
#
[tantek]
The other concern I have about repeating events is they can shift the framing of regular events from a fun labor of love to becoming a "duty" and then that can alter the tenor of such events. Something about the explicit creation step feels like it reinforces a greater sense of agency, of "choosing" to do something
#
aaronpk
that's definitely true for the kinds of events on the indieweb calendar
#
[tantek]
Right, for any creatives community I'd expect
#
[tantek]
Like there are plenty of corporate tools
#
[tantek]
Better to keep designing for creativity and joy IMO
#
[tantek]
I believe this is one of the reasons Upcoming was so successful at what it did and made so many fans
#
[tantek]
Maybe this is a good high level design question: are you designing for suits or artists? (Contrasting extremes)
#
aaronpk
this is definitely some middle grey area
#
aaronpk
the hot pink suits
#
[tantek]
Right it's a spectrum
#
[tantek]
lol that made me think of the Barbie movie
#
[tantek]
To add to [artlung]'s positive community examples of weekly repeating events, there are also things like trivia nights (though typically backed by the venue/bar, kind of a form of marketing), run clubs (sometimes backed by a store, sometimes paid clubs, sometimes all volunteer), swing/salsa dancing nights (usually a minimal cover charge, sometimes by venues and sometimes by organizers who rent a venue or guarantee minimum drink etc

spends)

We used to have weekly microformats dinners here in SF on Wednesdays and I certainly remember the labor of having to create the new wiki page and copy/paste/update all the details 😆. Examples on the microformats wiki. They were mostly social, a mix of community catchup and microformats topics. Free to attend though typically paid did buy food at what we venues we chose.
#
[tantek]
Aaronpk I believe this is how we met right? ^ or rather you used Google search to discover a microformats meetup and showed up!
#
aaronpk
indeed
#
aaronpk
i searched google for something like "san francisco meetup wednesday september 19th"
#
[tantek]
I remember when Google was good at such searches. 🫗

#
[tantek]
Upcoming was great at serving the community and they never had to make features for repeating events
#
[tantek]
That link is a good example. When I created the individual microformats events, it was a prompt to write an instance-specific description every time which made the events more fun, interesting, and perhaps "fresher". Repeating events with the same description can feel stale, or become boring, uninteresting, hard to distinguish why should I come this week vs next week
#
aaronpk
that's another really good example of staleness of recurring events
#
[tantek]
Are the descriptions in repeating events written for everyone including regulars (like the microformats examples) or are they glossed over by the regulars and only there for new people?
#
[tantek]
E.g. I know I struggled with this for the HWC events I organized in SF pre-pandemic. There's comfort in a regular structure in repeating events however that means less of a sense of novelty and spontaneity
