hey any vHWC this week? since Portland and Nurnberg are meeting?
#
tantek
since it's so quiet in here, I'd like to pose a real world (non-indieweb) example for Code of Conduct discussion
#

[@jscherni] firefox nightly I am falling in love with @Firefox all over again. It's like going back to an old girlfriend after you've both grown up!
#
tantek
So, here in this primarily male (and likely het) channel, I'm curious to see / hear if anyone see anything wrong with that tweet, or any of the replies, and why
#
tantek
I'll check back in a while. Discuss.

tantek, re that tweet, I don’t understand the analogy at all, so I do not understand how to judge any of the replies either.
#
Zegnat
Honestly, the reply saying “Great analogy” is the biggest puzzle to me…
#
jjuran
Zegnat: He left. :-/
#
Zegnat
He’ll be back and read the logs :)
#
jjuran
Ah :-)
#
jjuran
I think the romantic involvement metaphor is inadvisable, but I don’t hear anything sexualized in it.
#
jjuran
I feel a bit excluded in the sense that the speaker is referencing what’s meant to be a shared experience, but it’s not something I identify with.
#
jjuran
s/metaphor/simile/
#
Zegnat
I am not even sure the metaphor (or simile) is explaining anything about the users relation to Firefox. Which is where I get lost.
#
Zegnat
Might just be that I do not tend to anthropomorphise things, so equating anything to an ex puzzles me.
#
jjuran
Also, I don’t need to know about the speaker’s (implied) past relationships generally, and that maturity may have been an issue in particular.
#
jjuran
I’m not sure it merits a “hey, not cool”, but yeah, inadvisable.
#
Zegnat
What part would you say is the inadvisable part? The one where the user seems to imply something about their past relations?
#
Zegnat
I personally do not mind someone using terms like “ex-girlfriend”, as I expect them not to mind whatever term I want to use for my relations. But I will also be the first to admit I have been incredibly privileged when I grew up and never had to think about it.
#
jjuran
In a professional context, I think it’s best not to raise the topic of romantic relationships at all.
#
jjuran
Also, I’m not clear what the speaker was trying to communicate.
#
Zegnat
Oh, I definitely don’t bring it up in professional context.
#
Zegnat
This just seems to be a private person who has switched back to Firefox after a couple of years and wants to put the feeling into words.
#
Zegnat
If they think they can best put it into words on their personal twitter by equating to human relations. I say, let them.
#
Zegnat
That might raise the question if @Firefox should have replied
#
Zegnat
(I would have found it funny if @Firefox had replied with something like “just remember we are not exclusive!” though ;))
#
Loqi
[@firefox] @jscherni glad to have you back ?
#
Zegnat
Yeah. I am not sure that reply was a good move.
#
jjuran
When I express my appreciation of Firefox, I tend to drop stats: https://twitter.com/joshuajuran/status/536767612454068224
#
Loqi
[@joshuajuran] Holy shit. @firefox is down to 0.0% CPU when idle.
#
gRegorLove
I broke up with my ex because she didn't load websites fast enough for me.
#
Loqi
[@joshuajuran] I just launched @firefox 30 and not a single restored tab got stuck trying to load (and burning CPU). Thanks for fixing this serious issue!
#
Zegnat
Let them describe their feelings for returning to Fx however. But don’t have @Firefox then confirm the “relationship”. Maybe. Because I assume @Firefox is a “professional”.
#
Zegnat
That said, still not sure I really understand the original tweet so hard to judge if the @Firefox reply is OK or not
#
jjuran
I have no issue with @firefox’s response. It was playful and cute.
#
Zegnat
gRegorLove, make sure to put fast-HTTP-handling as a quality you look for on your dating profile in the future ;)
#
gRegorLove
"Looking for a lady who is HTTP 200 OK"
#
gRegorLove
Ok, I think I might actually do this.
#
jjuran
Wait, I think I got what’s bothering me. Comparing a romantic partner to a product (software or not) strikes me as objectification.
#
jjuran
Poor Mario keeps getting HTTP 302 In Another Castle
#
Zegnat
Ooh, that’s the opposite of how I was looking at it jjuran! Interesting! I was thinking anthropomorphisation of the product, and you objectification of the partner.
#
Zegnat
I totally see how the objectification of the partner reads as a problem.
#
Zegnat
(Someone made a playful tweet, gets ripped apart by the internet for specific word choices. I don’t think that was intended here ?)
#
jjuran
But we only ripped the OP to shreds because we were asked nicely. ;-)
#
Zegnat
I better go do something productive to counterbalance. Spread the local police’s message on Facebook looking for evidence of the attack at last week’s pride parade feels like the right thing to do.

jjuran++ IMO you got it. It's the objectification that's the primary problem with the original post.
