What is a URL?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "URL" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "URL is ____", a sentence describing the term)

wonders if Loqi announcing the newsletter draft should go into the meta channel as well

aaronpk: btw, how does Loqi get the wiki edit notifications - doesn't seem documented on the wiki (or I missed it)
#
aaronpk
via mediawiki recentchanges API
#
sknebel
just polling? seems surprisingly fast for that
#
aaronpk
lemme see what it's called now
#
aaronpk
no there's a hook mechanism
#
aaronpk
used to be the RecentChanges IRC bot
#
aaronpk
but they changed it up in a later version
#
aaronpk
it sends a UDP packet to the perl bot on each edit
#
aaronpk
that's how Loqi started
#
sknebel
ah, that thing
#
aaronpk
hm it's still using that, i thought i had changed it
#
aaronpk
wgRC2UDPAddress is the config option
#
sknebel
wondered if we couldn't relatively easily convert that to a websub ping to e.g. switchboard, and get websub on the wiki that way
#
aaronpk
weird, it says it was removed in 1.24
#
aaronpk
i mean at the very least i could make Loqi ping switchboard
#
aaronpk
just need to find a topic URL that makes sense
#
sknebel
does switchboard do wildcard subscriptions?
#
aaronpk
i don't think so
#
sknebel
hm, otherwise it could just have been the page url
#
aaronpk
you want to subscribe to the recentchanges feed right?
#
aaronpk
not changes on each page
#
sknebel
same difference in a way ;)
#
sknebel
if it's just for Kaja it'd probably be easier if we just gave it the UDP feed too
#
sknebel
but if we could get the wiki WebSubified that might be neat
#
sknebel
theres also a pubsubhubbub extension, but I'm not sure if it still works/is maintained

#
aaronpk
that was a PITA getting the headers wrangled in mediawiki tho
#
aaronpk
mediawiki apparently sets a Link header and overrides any previous Link header that has been set
#
aaronpk
which is an unfortunate side effect of WebSub re-using the Link header
#
tantek
sounds like a MediaWiki bug
bear joined the channel
#
aaronpk
that or i just can't find the specific mediawiki hook to tell it to add an HTTP Link header
#
aaronpk
i tried using the php header() function in the config file but i was overruled

greetings bear :)
#
tantek
what do you mean by post-browser devs?
#
bear
it's what I call the class of devs that grew up with modern browsers and see the world in either "it's all js or nothing" or "it's all php or nothing"
#
bear
especially those that seem intent on rewriting *everything* in some js or derived language
#
bear
I don't mind javascript or php - great tools for creating web applications - but there is a class of dev that want to do *everything* in nodejs when a call to an already existing library would do the trick
#
tantek
post-browser is confusing then, as the js-only devs IMO are doing browser-only dev, (nearly no server)
#
tantek
nodejs itself is confusing. is it a language, a framework, an http server?
#
bear
I could pick a better name than post-browser, sure
#

ok time to iterate on the "Changed Wiki Pages" section of the newsletter which is getting quite long (and not as useful perhaps)
#
tantek
like maybe a paragraph for each # s of edits?
#
tantek
1 edit: page 1, page 2, ... etc.
#
tantek
2 edits: page 1, page 2, ... etc.
#
tantek
or is it useful to show *who* edited each page?
#
tantek
I'm also wondering if it would help to block certain pages from the "Changed Wiki Pages" summary that are *always* in there
#
tantek
e.g. "Events" - it's edits are already reflected in much greater detail earlier in the newsletter
#
tantek
oops my copy/pasta of a photo in a future event made it into the newsletter online version
#
bear
would love to see substantial edits or new pages bubble to the top and then have a list of other changes - then it will be easier to spot new or significant updates
#
tantek
new pages have their own section in the newsletter already
#
bear
huh, I always thought ... well cool then
#
aaronpk
wow yeah that section is way too long now
#
tantek
I think 5 might be a good threshold for # of edits to make it "interesting" enough to list on its own
#
tantek
maybe 4
#
tantek
and any page with fewer edits that that can be grouped into a paragraph with inline list of linked pages
#
aaronpk
so the current list of changed pages would stop after the ones with 4 edits, then everything below is just one long list of page names?
#
aaronpk
removing the information "X edits" and the username for all pages with <4 edits?
#
tantek
no three paragraphs of page names
#
tantek
1 edit: ... ... ... ...
#
tantek
2 edits:
#
tantek
3 edits: ...
#
tantek
not in tha order obv
#
aaronpk
that could work
#
tantek
is it ok to omit the author info on low # s of edits?
#
tantek
or ironically are those the ones that someone should look at?
#
tantek
aaronpk: I don't suppose the newsletter could de-dupe image urls it finds?
#
tantek
i.e. ignore latter re-uses of the same URL?
#
tantek
(to avoid this happening in the future)
#
aaronpk
was that the same mediawiki url?
#
aaronpk
i thought it did that already actually, i wonder what happened
#
tantek
two mediawiki URLs, but same .jpg
#
tantek
ok done with https://indieweb.org/content_management_system for now - if anyone has any other CMSs to add, in particular the one you yourself as using, please do so!
