↩️ They do still happen, but as they got more popular they got harder to organise as they needed larger venues, so SF and London were tougher. There is a London one this year: https://eleven.barcamplondon.org One successor is Indieweb Camps https://indieweb.org/IndieWebCamps

Based the past few months, I'm thinking of skipping HWC SF when it collides with WaffleJS. They've been holding a great set of talks with diverse speakers, and I'd rather go participate than organize something which competes with that.

#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
#
[tantek]
what is HWC
#
Loqi
Homebrew Website Club is a bi-weekly meetup of people passionate about or interested in creating, improving, building, designing their own website, in the same structure as the classic Homebrew Computer Club meetings https://indieweb.org/hwc
#
[tantek]
I think we've grown quite beyond that
#
[tantek]
and it's not just hobbyists with their own website - that's too narrow
#
[tantek]
<!here> how's this as a new dfn:
#
[tantek]
The Homebrew Website Club is a growing world-wide network of all levels of web users who want to take back control of their online identities and content from social media content silos.
[grantcodes] joined the channel
#
[grantcodes]
Depends on the goal of the dfn, could be shortened and retain the majority of the meaning
#
Loqi
[grantcodes]: [eddie] left you a message 4 days, 21 hours ago: Great Idea! the funny thing is that is actually what the ad-hoc session page is! It’s got a place to add and +1 topics as well as some standard ideas for timing, etc.
#
[grantcodes]
Homebrew Website Club is a world-wide network of people who want to take control of their online identities and content - think that gets across the same idea

To me, that definition of HWC overlaps my definition of IndieWeb, whereas the previous definition differentiated the two
#
gRegorLove
+1 for keeping "meetup" in the dfn somewhere
#
gRegorLove
what is Indieweb Meetup?
#
Loqi
IndieWeb Meetup is a local event where people can gather to learn more about the IndieWeb community https://indieweb.org/IndieWeb_Meetup
#
[kevinmarks]
Did wafflejs change their time? I have done hwc followed by wafflejs before
#
[tantek]
There is some overlap yes, and the venues are far enough apart to be impractical without a bicycle or other method of rapid transport without parking hassle, so in practice no one has done both since you 🙂
#
[tantek]
grantcodes I think adding the "back ... from social media" indicates we are addressing a very real and present problem that people can relate to
#
[tantek]
whereas " take control of their online identities and content" by itself sounds abstract and detached from any motivation
#
[tantek]
[gRegorLove] agreed about keeping "meetup" explicitly
#
[tantek]
"The Homebrew Website Club is a growing world-wide network of meetups for all levels of web users who want to take back control of their online identities and content from social media silos."
#
[tantek]
(minor edits: de-dupe "content", add "meetups of")
