We're going to Portland for Indie Web Summit. It's a gathering with a simple mantra: Own Your Own Content. Get a domain, build a website, and use social media as a promotional tool, not as an all-consuming devourer of your time and talent. Learn more here: https://indieweb.org/2019

[aaronpk] by that I mean the determination to get everyone off of silos as soon as possible rather than accepting a silo identity as one.
#
[fluffy]
Like it should be okay if a friend I have from twitter wants to just use their twitter profile to authenticate themselves without having to go through the RelMeAuth song and dance.
[frank] joined the channel
#
aaronpk
the whole discussion in dev this morning was about doing exactly that
#
[fluffy]
Ah, I’ll have to read the scrollback.
#
aaronpk
I plan on letting people log in with their twitter accounts to my site too
#
[fluffy]
Cool. Will you add it to indielogin.com as well?
#
aaronpk
that's a different story
#
aaronpk
for one, I don't know if I want to maintain twitter API keys that a bunch of other people are going to be using to authenticate people to their own sites
#
[fluffy]
Like I’d love to see indielogin support a bunch of profile-based Auth mechanisms like twitter and OpenID 1.x (which gains dreamwidth and launchpad)
#
aaronpk
also, we made a decision long ago that the wiki only accepts logins from personal websites, so we would have to reassess that if I changed indielogin.com
#
[fluffy]
Hmm, that’s fair.
#
[fluffy]
Anyway this is the whole reason why I intend to write Authl and make that the login mechanism for Publ.
#
aaronpk
you will rarely see blanket statements like "everyone should get off silos asap" here, because it turns out there are a lot of different considerations depending on exactly what situation you're talking about
#
[fluffy]
Okay, that’s fair.
#
aaronpk
I think that's one of the more confusing aspects about indieweb too. people kind of expect "the indieweb" to have single unified opinions on stuff, but in reality we're just a bunch of people who have different viewpoints
#
[fluffy]
True. Unfortunately that’s caused a big situational impedance mismatch whenever discussing it on Mastodon.
#
aaronpk
yep for sure
#
[fluffy]
The most pithy expression I’ve seen (which I kind of agree with) was “oh, so the usual foss mess”
[kimberlyhirsh] joined the channel
#
aaronpk
ugh plz no
#
aaronpk
tbh that's another reason I don't open source everything I make. I explicitly don't want to identify with that group.
#
[fluffy]
Someday I will get around to writing another blog rant about the impedance mismatches between what I want, what ActivityPub is suited for, and the weird middle ground that’s been emerging in IndieWeb stuff, at least in my experience.
#
aaronpk
I would love to read that
#
[fluffy]
Most IndieWeb sites are difficult for me to subscribe to because there’s this big intermingling of like/comment/etc posts with the more long-form stuff. I’d love to see better feed reader client support that provides a more filtering UX. like seeing activity items as separate from primary posts or whatever.
[Rose] joined the channel
#
[fluffy]
The protocols are getting there but the tooling feels like it’s forever behind.
#
aaronpk
that's another reason I don't put likes/replies on my home page :)
#
[fluffy]
Like we have a bunch of ways of reimplementing twitter now but that’s not the experience I want out of the web. I liked the google reader approach.
#
[fluffy]
Yeah I try to keep that stuff minimal. I have my “chatter” blog section for replies and usually just add favorites etc as metadata on existing entries. I need to get better about making sharing items or something, for providing simple reposts as a daily linkdump or something.
#
aaronpk
definitely readers can help with that kind of filtering though. I have some of those filters in aperture already.
#
[fluffy]
Or maybe I’ll spin up a separate Publ site for the more streamy webmentiony things.
#
[fluffy]
I should try aperture someday.
#
[fluffy]
I looked into self-hosting it but I couldn’t wrap my head around the requirements and it wasn’t clear to me if I could just start using your instance or if it would be reliable for me to do so.
#
Loqi
definitely
#
aaronpk
yeah it's a few moving parts to set it up to self-host it. you're more than welcome to use my instance to try it out.
#
[fluffy]
Does it support OPML import/export?
#
aaronpk
not natively, but someone wrote a script that can do that via the microsub API
#
[fluffy]
Oh cool
#
aaronpk
this is also a fine line I tread, where I want to let other people use my tools, both the instances I run and the open source versions, but I also want to encourage more people to implement the protocols from scratch so that there isn't just one microsub server
#
[fluffy]
Definitely. I do like how simple the individual protocols are to support in general but it feels like there’s a huge amount of buy-in to get to the point of wanting to do them.
#
[fluffy]
At least WebSub was really easy to add to FeedOnFeeds though.
#
[fluffy]
seems like this discussion should move to a different channel by now. But I also have some stuff to take care of and typing a bunch is the last thing I need during this fibro flareup.
#
@cubeghost
imo the best way to make ActivityPub and indieweb more accessible to a wider audience is to get fandom involved
