so my twitter account was picked up by spam filters because my invite text were too close to being duplicate replies. I like the idea of DMing invites as way to totally avoid but if inviting folks through syndication mix up your syntax and content
#
aaronpk
was that twitter's response?

My response: Thank you for letting me know the specific violation. In the future I will only send invitations to events natively on Twitter through DMs to ensure two way following.

what is a direct message
#
Loqi
messaging refers to one user sending another user a message (memo, letter, txt, photo …) that they read sometime later; on the IndieWeb, either directly via a personal site, or from one site to another https://indieweb.org/direct_message

#
@jgmac1106
↩️ but if folks were using blogs that had #IndieWeb building blocks that power the modern social web much of this would been easy, the tools for parsing microformats so robust...but there isn't an easy way to roll these out to students (yet gimme one more year).

Yes, anytime someone uses undefined jargon in the main #indieweb channel I’m now defining it as [[Category:jargon]] just to make the point
#
sknebel
What's the point you want to make thats not done better with a friendly reminder? (especially if its someone new as it was here?)

(or actually asking for a dfn instead of creating empty placeholders like that)

I think it's actually referring to JavaScript rendering stuff
#
sebsel
I understand hydrating as taking serialized data and putting it into models / classes / structs where you can work with in your programming language
#
sebsel
I don't really see any indieweb relevance also
#
sebsel
so [tantek]: at least put a link or citation to the usage, so we can better guess the meaning ;)
#
sebsel
I only see a message from 2017-01-27, https://indiechat.search.cweiske.de/?q=hydrate
#
Loqi
[jolvera] jamietanna[m]: first render is from the server, then it hydrates the markup with React and add all the goodies. And for navigation https://github.com/zeit/next.js/#prefetching-pages
#
[eddie]
Ahh gotcha
#
sebsel
so here it's HTML, returned from the server, but rendered by React. And then in the browser, React is added again, and takes over the HTML, so that it becomes dynamic again / js without js;dr
#
aaronpk
I also think it's a silly word but oh well
#
sebsel
it could mean multiple things, and there is no indieweb-specific meaning to it.
#
sebsel
other than people using server rendered react / vue / whatevs on their personal pages.
#
[schmarty]
Do we have a way to capture jargon besides making a definition and tagging it Category:jargon?
#
sebsel
just do `jargon << term` for it?
#
Loqi
Sorry, I couldn't find a page named "just do `jargon" or similar
#
[schmarty]
Might be less confusing to do that with these terms instead
#
[eddie]
That does seem like a better scenario then having a bunch of random pages everywhere
#
Loqi
Generated a new draft of the newsletter! https://indieweb.org/this-week/2019-06-14.html
#
[tantek]
No we have no other way currently. And the plan is for Loqi to steer jargon users in #indieweb to use the dev channel instead
#
[tantek]
Since even the humans have trouble with keeping up with and encouraging such movement
#
[tantek]
sknebel++ has been doing a good job of that though
#
Loqi
sknebel has 30 karma in this channel over the last year (118 in all channels)
#
sebsel
I have a feeling that a lot of the jargon terms introduces are used by people who are on IRC, rather than Slack.
#
sebsel
We could use numbers on that, but... I feel that IRC users let the jargon flow more easily
#
sebsel
And I think it's also hard to blame them... the medium defines the message.
#
sebsel
But yes, Loqi nudging people could help.
#
[tantek]
Haha we could have Loqi call that out. “Hi I see you’ve joined us from Freenode! While customary in IRC, we prefer to discuss development topics and especially any jargon like term1, term3, and term 3 in the indieweb-dev channel. Thanks!”
#
sknebel
ugh, please no
#
[tantek]
😂😂
#
sknebel
"welcoming" is certainly something else
#
sknebel
I think any kind of automatic reminder has to be really careful and only with a quite limited word list
#
sknebel
if it's worth it at all
#
sebsel
how about bridging IRC's #indieweb-beginners to #indieweb in Slack, and #indieweb-jargon in Slack to #indieweb in IRC? :)
#
sebsel
joking here
#
sebsel
but #indieweb-beginners with Slack autojoin could be something too?
#
sebsel
!meme create all the channels
#
[tantek]
Nah users are not beginners
#
[tantek]
I dislike that framing / implied ranking
#
sknebel
agreed
#
[tantek]
Frankly most developers are (self-admitted even!) beginners at UX, design, use-cases / user flow documentation - all of which is ontopic for #indieweb
#
[tantek]
Though we are blessed with a greater than average number / % of UX-aware and user-centric devs in this community for which I’m very grateful
#
sebsel
I don't mean that the main channel shouldn't be welcoming, but for new people... it's nice to have a place that's obviously okay to talk in. A lower bar to entry.
#
sebsel
I did not mean a beginner in IndieWeb is a level 1 dev.
#
[tantek]
Jargon use tends to be more excluding than welcoming.
#
[tantek]
So I think it’s an ok balance to steer (even brand new) jargon users immediately to IndieWeb-Deb

I definitely think the IndieWeb channel is the place for new people. In terms of the jargon, Loqi doesn't CURRENTLY support prompting people to move based on Jargon. So since jargon << term adds to "see also" could Loqi not check the See Also section? Is checking the pages in a category a lot easier?
#
Loqi

#
[tantek]
everybody 🙂
#
[eddie]
haha, not me, but have fun
#
aaronpk
nope lol
#
[tantek]
basically beyond asking "what is", I'm now taking it a step further and any use of jargon in the #indieweb channel related to indieweb is getting a new stub page so future Loqi can know to nudge people
#
[tantek]
perhaps the permalink to the chat context would help at least with someone coming by later and wanting to clean it up
#
sknebel
what is hydrate?
#
sknebel
that's not even a stub
#
sknebel
please start a list on a dedicated page instead of creating totally empty definitions
#
sknebel
and whatever future code does the nudging gets to check that list too
#
[tantek]
checking a random list in HTML is likely more than twice as much work as checking for the category, really don't want to burden the future code with that higher barrier
#

[tantek]
there's this weird culture of @-ing people on twitter with some amount of "calling out" or "implied responsibility to respond" that I kinda dislike and I think is offputting for recruitment / outreach efforts
#
sknebel
if several people tell you that's not great, please consider that feedback

Christina is a friend, she'll take it OK
#
[tantek]
this may have been more appropriate / inviting in the early "clubby" days of Twitter, but in today's toxic Twitter "public", I think it's far less friendly
#
[tantek]
whether it's "OK" is not the actual point. the point is whether it is more or less positive / successful compared to dming someone in terms of actually being sufficiently positively inviting for them to make plans and show up

what is hydrate
#
Loqi
hydrate is web developer jargon for the process of client-side JS taking over a DOM that was generated on the server, adding it to JS components, adding event handlers, … instead of generating components only on the client or entirely replacing those sent by the server https://indieweb.org/hydrate
#
[tantek]
wait why is that better? and we lost all indieweb relevance in that change

#
[tantek]
were the specifics I provided wrong? because "components" is awfully abstract and doesn't say at all what the point is of hydration
[Rose] joined the channel
#
sknebel
from my understanding, the term means this specific thing. so e.g. adding a webmention.io comment widget with js does not count, it's tied into this entire thing of JS taking over page elements generated on the server and really mostly in the context of framework liks vue/react
#
sknebel
so you take an app that'd "normally" generate the DOM with JS in the browser and add a server-side step to do the same generation with the initial data on the server, and then the JS gets added in
#
aaronpk
i guess the indieweb relevance is if someone is using a framework that does that to run their site
#
sknebel
which is the metaphor: the page is made on the server, "dried out" (turned into just HTML), sent to the browser and the "water" of all the JS infrastructure doing dynamic things is added back in
#
sknebel
maybe "page elements" or something is better than "components", which itself is heavy jargon
#
sknebel
yeah, the relevance thing is kind of an issue with general web dev topics - "someone uses it"

not the point

like for exampe, as a reviewer, do I only approve the PR? or do I approve the PR and merge it?
#
[tantek]
e.g. what sknebel did vs what aaronpk did, respectively, just minutes apart.
#
[tantek]
uh, yeah, more steps = more confusing for people in general

you're forgetting all the steps in mediawiki between edit and save
#
aaronpk
"how do i add a new section? how do I upload an image? do i need to sign this line with my name? what's the syntax for that? ~~~ or ~~~~ or ~~~~~"

"Preview" is pretty much the same in github/mediawiki and an optional step
#
[tantek]
nah that's mediawiki syntax vs markdown
#
[tantek]
content vs UI - very different debates
#
[tantek]
lol how do I upload an image. on any wiki page if you search the page for "upload" there is a link "Upload file". on github it's like wat how do I upload an image.
#
aaronpk
i don't think mocking people's difficulty with the wiki is helpful

no I'm mocking GitHub's completely undisoverability of UX in comparison
#
aaronpk
that's not really how it comes across

it literally doesn't matter
