Thinking of organizing an #indieweb „Homebrew Website Club“ Meeting in Düsseldorf - what would be a good German name for this? „Hausgebrautes Website Club“ doesn’t really sound as cool.

[schmarty]
[chrisaldrich] there was a smallish conversation about the not-it emoji thing this weekend and the "not it!" tendency in general.
#
[tantek]
[schmarty] you made a very good meta-point at Summit about the presence of the "not it" proposal on the indieweb wiki
#
chrisaldrich
What was that point?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "that point" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "that point is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
chrisaldrich
Not-it often leads to lack of plurality and SPOA...
#
[schmarty]
while we can't stop people from saying "someone should X" and then watching a room full of people rush to not be the one to do "X" by declaring "not-it"
#
[tantek]
Attempting to paraphrase: We have thus far avoided a culture of "not it" in the IndieWeb Community, and it would be a shame if the very attempt to develop/promote a "not it" emoji actually had a cultural impact and cause people (especially outside the community) to think that "not it"ing is a thing here (when it isn't)
#
[tantek]
I guess my attempt was close enough 🙂
#
[schmarty]
having the page on the wiki (and even taking steps to try and make art and get "not-it" added to Unicode) sure is a lot of effort being dedicated to teaching people they should be the first to opt out of volunteering for thigns.
#
chrisaldrich
and then a decade later, you've got Twitter 2018....
#
[tantek]
There was a separate criticism that the "not it" emoji would end up being (ab)used as a "picking my nose" emoji instead, perhaps even more so than the intended meaning.
#
[schmarty]
i don't know how slippery the slope is, i just think it goes against an environment of positivity.
#
[tantek]
it goes against an environment of being helpful
#
chrisaldrich
I was still never quite clear about the "IndieWebness" that prompted that page other than the idea of /fun
#
chrisaldrich
I like the idea of Santa holding his finger to his nose, giving a wink and then magic happening. Maybe that's what we should get behind? ;)
#
[tantek]
While I agree with [schmarty] about the negative cultural impact concerns, I think key question is whether it belongs on the IndieWeb wiki at all - and I can't see how/why it would. "not it" is not a "thing" in the IndieWeb Community, and I sure don't want to see it become one
#
[tantek]
Does anyone <!here> actually think there's IndieWeb relevance to the "not it" emoji proposal?
#
jgmac1106[m]
