#
[chrisbergr]
https://indieweb.org/sparkline#IndieWeb_Examples is something different. But this thing I've seen on Jeremy's page and also on yours with the graphical statistic is something I wan't to do also.
#
aaronpk
yeah, it's debatable whether the little mini profile photo on the wiki with the {{ }} syntax is actually a sparkline, but oh well
#
[chrisbergr]
I'm surprised that David doesn't have a wordpress plugin for this yet ^^
#
[tantek]
aaronpk it's the terminology that Tufte uses even for things that don't look like little charts
#
aaronpk
I knew that was going to invoke a tantek
#
aaronpk
I said it was debatable, not that it was wrong
#
[tantek]
so I haven't bothered arguing it despite the seeming implication from the components of the name
#
[tantek]
I agree that the implied meaning of the name is more specific than Tufte's use. decided to just stick with his use since it's his term
#
aaronpk
even tho his examples include little tiny diagrams, I think stretching that to a photo is a bit much
#
[tantek]
I don't have his book(s) handy, but he literally defines it as images that fit in a line of text, including the classical diagram of Saturn inline in I think Galileo's text
#
[tantek]
lineart vs photo I suppose that could be an additional stretch
#
aaronpk
sure, but at some point common usage overrides the original definition of a word
#
aaronpk
anyway this is really not important
#
[tantek]
the name of the template definitely hurts usability, we've seen plenty of evidence for that
#
[tantek]
so I'm not unsympathetic
#
aaronpk
the important thing is that the instructions on https://indieweb.org/wikifying#Step_Four:_Add_a_sparkline are not good
#
aaronpk
or rather, that paragraph is fine, but what it links to is not
#
aaronpk
yes, it's not clear that's the thing on the page to look at
#
aaronpk
imo that should be the first thing on the page because that is the most common thing people are going to be reading this page to do
#
gRegorLove
I think that wikyfing section heading should be changed from "Step Four: Add a sparkline
#
gRegorLove
" to something more userfriendly, and yeah, link directly to the how-to section on the sparkline template page
#
gRegorLove
Maybe even changed on the template how-to section, in case people are like "what's an h-card template?"
#
gRegorLove
Will think more... don't have immediate alternatives
#
aaronpk
tbh I actually didn't even realize "make a small h-card template" is the thing I was trying to do when reading the page
#
gRegorLove
"Set up a template with your avatar, name, and URL"
#
aaronpk
I gave up on the page and went to my /Template:aaronpk page, copied that, and changed the values
#
gRegorLove
what is wiki signature?
#
Loqi
The sparkline template is used to display an inline photo with an optional class attached, e.g. to make a u-photo microformat. It is commonly used to create templates for users to sign their name on event RSVPs or other wiki pages https://indieweb.org/wiki_signature
#
gRegorLove
Hm, double redirect
#
gRegorLove
or not, nvm.
#
gRegorLove
wiki signature could be a friendly term for it too
#
[chrisbergr]
I guess wiki signature would be helpful if you are familiar with the usage of wikis at all.
#
gRegorLove
though even that is kind of overloaded, since mediawiki has the four tildes to add your name+timestamp... admittedly not used a lot in the indieweb community
#
[chrisbergr]
But if someone (like me) is not familiar with it.. Maybe something like "user tag" or "custom user link" would be more self-explanatory
#
gRegorLove
I combined the minimal h-card sparkline in my signature, perhaps further confusing things? XD https://indieweb.org/Template:sparkline#How_to_include_your_h-card_in_your_wiki_signature
#
gRegorLove
[chrisbergr], Was the first place you wanted to use it on an event RSVP or an examples section of some other page?
#
gRegorLove
Or just setting it up as part of getting started
#
aaronpk
examples section
#
[chrisbergr]
yes, examples section. Aaron started explaining me this here at 11:30PM
#
[chrisbergr]
Back when I did the getting started, I didn't understand it and just left it out.
#
gRegorLove
Gotcha. Good feedback.
#
gRegorLove
It's underused, but I could maybe expand https://indieweb.org/Template:user to use the sparkline template under the hood... then the "user template" docs wouldn't have to refer to sparkline.
#
gRegorLove
oh, it already is... it links to the personal site instead of wiki user page.
#
gRegorLove
I tried to improve the docs for hypothetical updates to the user template: https://indieweb.org/User:Gregorlove.com/sandbox#How_to_set_up_your_user_template
#
gRegorLove
Feedback appreciated^
#
[chrisbergr]
This is quite understandable, especially inserting the name and clicking on it to get to the template. But if you are not familiar with the wiki terms, the "sign your name" might be a bit scary. Maybe "set your name" or "put your name" would be less official. Or it's just me and the fact that english isn't my first language.
#
gRegorLove
How about "A user template allows you to add your name and photo on a wiki page with a link to your user page."?
#
gRegorLove
"sign your name" does sound pretty formal
#
gRegorLove
It's a wiki, not a contract :)
#

That's better. Definitely.

#
[chrisbergr]
[gRegorLove] If the page name remains 'Template:sparkline', the section can also be called 'How to set up your sparkline template'. That's how I understand the context. At the current version it's called 'How to make a small h-card template' and I didn't know that this is what I want because h-card wasn't mentioned above.

#
gRegorLove
[chrisbergr], Makes sense. I'm thinking this would be a "new" template, so that documentation would be on https://indieweb.org/Template:user and it wouldn't refer to sparklines at all. Then the wikifying page linking to it would have something like "Set up your user template"
#
gRegorLove
And yes, these are mostly use when linking to people from session notes, examples section, RSVPs on the wiki events, and in brainstorming discussions.
#
[chrisbergr]
Okay, I guess that would be fine, too. The most important thing is to find your way around starting from "getting started".
#
gRegorLove
Definitely
