I was wondering about the format for the online HWCs. Most of the ones I've been to previously were only regulars, so we did the normal quiet writing hour first and it wasn't awkward.
#
gRegorLove
With the last one I hosted, we did intros, then photo, then just kind of open for discussion.
#
gRegorLove
Which I think went ok, but should there be more structure to that "open for discussion"? set topics?
#
[chrisaldrich]
or even small mini-topics for brainstorming?
#
[chrisaldrich]
That question is more important when there are a number of newer people, particularly when there is a preponderance of "regulars" who may forget to be as welcoming or could possibly seem cold as everyone else seems to know everyone else.

↩️ Exactly do not let Facebook profit from the exploitation of iour dentity work, we need to root the webs and the urls in the youth and our communities. #IndieWeb is critical #literacies

#
[tantek]
gRegorLove re: format for online HWCs, I think we need to borrow / go back to some of the original structure of HWCs
#
[tantek]
one thing we did deliberately originally, following from the Homebrew Computer Club, was to timebox specific/individual questions and answers, and then encourage folks interested in following-up further to have a side discussion about it
#
[tantek]
that way we prevented any one person from (unintentionally) monopolizing the discussion
#
gRegorLove
agreed, one person last time was new (to me?) and didn't hang out long after intros, so I was concerned about being welcoming
#
[tantek]
this requires deliberate active work on the part of the organizer as a moderator
#
gRegorLove
pretty sure it was before the griefing we got too
#
[tantek]
and *especially* at the start
#
[tantek]
like literally limiting people to 1min
#
[tantek]
right, when one person goes on and on, if it's not of interest to others, especially new people, especially new quieter people, they'll just leave rather than raising a fuss
#
gRegorLove
we did get kind of in the weeds on CSS
#
[tantek]
so it is absolutely necessary for strong moderation
#
[tantek]
yeah that's the other thing I was going to bring up
#
[tantek]
I thought about that afterwards
#
[tantek]
and I think I'd rather keep discussions on topic specifically for *indieweb*
#
[tantek]
rather than descend into anything general webdev/webdesign
#
[tantek]
like I appreciate that people find this community helpful, and that people here are helpful
#
[tantek]
however, for any future generic webdev conversation, I think we as organizers / moderators should quickly (like not even allowing for 1min of let me describe my problem) redirect that to the online #dev channel
#
gRegorLove
I think that sounds good
#
[tantek]
and deliberately instead create space for *indieweb*-specific conversation, indieweb features/UI/protocols etc.
#
[tantek]
like if someone else wants to organize a generic web dev meetup/zoom, great, they should do that!
#
[tantek]
but that's not why people come to indieweb in general, so I'd rather not let that happen by default
#
aaronpk
i joined late and was pretty confused about what was going on with that css discussion
#
[tantek]
yeah I think in general we're going to redirect any general webdev questions back to the dev channel where people can answer/ignore as they wish, or discuss other topics in parallel
[Katherine] joined the channel
#

Hangouts calls are easy to start too if people need to screen share for those webdev convos
#
aaronpk
I haven't tried it yet, but zoom also has a way to do breakout sessions where people can split off into smaller groups from a main call
#
Salt[m]
I can play with the format for HWC? How much...? Like I am happy to do some work to get it to be more online comfortable (doing this for a lot of things right now...)
#
aaronpk
I'd say go for it!
#
[tantek]
I've experienced the breakout sessions from a participant perspective and it was quite fun!

When we were using Mumble for vHWC we would always recommend people to use push-to-talk. I don’t remember if that is available in Zoom.
#

It isn’t in Slack, which annoys me now that I constantly have to use Slack for meetings at work.
#
aaronpk
it is! if you're muted, spacebar becomes push-to-talk

in zoom

I just cannot believe this isn’t in Slack :(

Every single k12 school in the USA just went online with gDocs...this will just further cement Google's position as tools for teaching and the "open" web...which in terms of access it all does just work...for the priviledged....buy two chromebooks, just sign in, and everythign just works

Just pushed a release of Indigenous which now comes with a built-in anonymous account. The reader has some default channels and you can even change the endpoints without having the need of an IndieAuth enabled site! #indieweb
