why is the #indieweb so hard the activitypub world seems so simple relatively

@jackyalcine
IndieWeb: HTML (literally that's it; sprinkle some HTTP); ActivityPub: JSON, a smidge of crypto, required content-negotation, multiple storage formats (it's like OpenGraph/Twitter Cards but too much) https://twitter.com/kixiQu/status/1274144381067423749

the idea of activitypub being easier is funny and terrifying

easier to "sign-up" and start posting & commenting ... among only other ActivityPub "sites"

that's my "guess". not implementation

Ok I signed up on https://ti.to/indiewebcamp/iwc-west-2020 which asks me if it's ok to show me in the list of registrants. I said yes but nowhere is there a visible list of registrants. Confused. cc: GWG [chrisaldrich]

ahh GWG the ticket name in tito is wrong
#
aaronpk
but since this is a 100% remote event i'm going to make a new template for this otherwise it assumes there are two types of tickets

[Zee Spencer (He/Him)] @jalcine Sorry, fell asleep. The _first_ thing that feels off is I can't go to cutesy-domain.here, sign up; and start publishing words / pictures publicly. Mastodon kind-of solves this for ActivityPub; but ActivityPub feels really TwitterIsh; and I ....
#
jacky
all of which I think are valid
#
aaronpk
yeah it's just one of the many assumptions people come in with
#
[jgmac1106]
part of the reason why I am using subdomains for tech-4-teens.club ...I can do that for free and one push in Cpanel for community members.....and then many more pushes to get IndieWeb up and going on WP
#
[jgmac1106]
though name.com sponsored the program so maybe I can get them to add Known or a WP install to default options...except they use Softalicous for all third party installs

aaronpk: Now people just have to know about it...
#
GWG
aaronpk: Any chance in future, the ti.to code might end up in Meetable? To reduce duplication of effort?
#
aaronpk
it's more than just that
#
aaronpk
one of the reasons for the 2020.indieweb.org site is to have a nicer full landing page for the event
#
aaronpk
so meetable would have to also provide enough features to make the meetable pages look more like a full event page
#
aaronpk
i'm also not super thrilled about integrating tito with it directly, but I could imagine some sort of JS embed thing so that the tito code could be hosted externally
#
GWG
For now, I just always try to think of how to lower the number of steps in future.
#
aaronpk
the other way to go is to move the tito features we need into meetable, namely an actual registration system
#
GWG
aaronpk: Also a lot of overhead on your part
#
GWG
I wonder if there is a middle ground
#
GWG
Can you have capacity at an event counted by RSVP webmention?
#
aaronpk
we've been through this a number of times
#
aaronpk
there are several reasons for using a registration system, not just counting capacity

Almost wish I was available for IWC as I would almost be a meta announcer on how to do remote conferences right....so many trainings on "how to teach online" at conferences are done with such bad teaching
#
[jgmac1106]
Maybe I will MST 3000 it after the event.....Be easier to control for jargon and focus on the topic of "Not making your online conference awful"

They are all so bad.....OER20 wasn't too bad....they had karaoke, and the sessions more interactive...Probably a lot of overlap in ethos an experience there

renamed the default branch on 2020.indieweb.org to "main"
#
aaronpk
i'm trying to rename these at least if I touch the repo
#
GWG
aaronpk: I decided I'm going to do that as I work on projects.
#
GWG
Not sure of main though, but I have no attachment to the former default
#
aaronpk
yeah, it's a lot of work to do them all at once. I'll probably do another batch at some point, but for now I'm renaming them if I push any code
#
GWG
I thought of going with stable.
#
aaronpk
"stable" definitely depends on the workflow for the repo :)
#
aaronpk
sometimes the default branch is used as the unstable working code
#
GWG
In one repo, I have a develop branch
#
aaronpk
in general more descriptive branch names is better

jacky
