I'm not 100% sure where the issue lies, but I though Zoom would remember one's display name from session to session.
#
[chrisaldrich]
I remember changing mine to add my website and pronouns a couple of times, but I think they got dropped or missed a few times over the weekend.
#
[chrisaldrich]
Has anyone else seen this issue?
#
[chrisaldrich]
I have a feeling once or twice it may have been because I was logged in and using one of the IndieWeb accounts, but I don't think that would have been the problem for all of the instances I seem to remember.
#
[fluffy]
zoom is weird about that
#
[fluffy]
from what I can tell, if you’re signed into an account, it’ll use the name associated with the account, but if you’re not signed in it’ll use the last name used.
#
aaronpk
zoom accounts have a name, so if you change it at your account level it will use that
#
aaronpk
but every meeting it resets to your account name
#
aaronpk
changing it in the meeting does not change it at the account level
#
[fluffy]
yeah. I ahve two zoom accounts, one personal (named “fluffy (she/they)” and one for work. I always have to remember to switch to the correct account before clicking a zoom link.
#
[chrisaldrich]
Thanks, I'll double check. I just remembering having the opposite problem last month. My daughter kept changing my display name to hers, so I was always in meetings as Genevieve or ジェネビーブ for her Japanese classes. I still have people calling me "Katakana Chris" because they didn't know the characters.
#
[chrisaldrich]
And she never had access to the account level...
#
[tantek]
Or so you thought...
#
[chrisaldrich]
And oddly I don't recall changing my name in one of the IndieWeb accounts from what I would have guessed to have been a color name to my own name...

interesting per-camp category for sessions. [chrisaldrich] do you think we should move towards that instead of the per-year category?
#
gRegorLove
https://indieweb.org/Category:IWC_West_2020_Sessions seems like a short version of the schedule page, but it does also make it easy to embed a list of sessions with the #categorytree tag
#
[chrisaldrich]
I created to additional categories for this camp, one for "organizing pages" and one for "session pages". While organizing I sort of wish I'd had them for quick reference, but they also make some nice UI for finding things once the camp is over.
#
[chrisaldrich]
As I go through the final archiving process of this camp, I'm generally trying to simply comment out some of the planning portions so that future camps can more easily cut and paste moving forward.
#
[chrisaldrich]
Hopefully it will be easy for organizers to deal with these new categories (and people will find them useful) with the cut/paste/rename set up, then pieces that are needed will just have redlinks to be filled in or copied over without as much work. Thoughts?
#

#

I copied it from a prior camp page... it does embed the whole page, but it only scrolls if you're in the window to scroll it....
#

#
[chrisaldrich]
haven't gotten to that part on my list yet while on conference calls today...

I'm taking a break for a bit, but might also come back to add some of the sessions to the respective wiki pages they're broadly about (especially the more technical /brainstormy ones) in ==Camp Sessions== sections on those pages.
#
[chrisaldrich]
I will note that having etherpads for some of the pieces like Intros, Demos, Project Planning helped on multiple levels.
#
[chrisaldrich]
They were a bit more accessible than trying to get people to edit wiki (or having potential conflicts doing so).
#
[chrisaldrich]
It seems like it helped people focus more directly in one place for note taking rather than needing to copy notes over from chat.
#
[chrisaldrich]
It also cuts down on the amount of attention one needs to split between the video, the etherpad, AND the chat AND other channels to follow what's going on ...
#
[tantek]
yes, Etherpads are so much better for real time collab
#
[tantek]
no pressure to save, no fear of "what if someone typed something when I was typing and I couldn't see it"
#
[chrisaldrich]
I'm not sure if it was the same for attendees, but I felt a lot of additional anxiety about the need to be able to watch/check half a dozen different places simultaneously between video, audio, multiple chat channels and etherpad simultaneously as an organizer. Just too many inputs all at once.
#
[chrisaldrich]
slack didn't seem to want to give me any notifications of my name being used about half the time either... and I particularly checked the settings on Thursday night just in case.
