I'd really like it if all these larger sites/people starting to write about the 'indieweb' and how great it was, implemented some indieweb protocols. Do you think they're aware of the impact they could actually have by doing it rather than pandering to it? :/?

Do you have particular examples Ruxton?

chrisaldrich: that smashing mag post that keeps popping up is a prime example

definitely a good article

Just saw one of the comments on the Smashing post, and it asked if "Presumably a radical feminist GC lesbian like me would be welcome on the IndieWeb?"
#
[tw2113]
I had to reply that yes absolutely welcome. We couldn't exactly moderate in any way even if we wanted, at a technical level
#
Ruxton
writing about it is great and I'm not trying to shit on the fact they're making a larger audience aware of it, but imagine if when they wrote about it and people could use the stuff they're writing about to interact :O

Hallo @IndieWebCamp, how do I make twitter to link back!? Twitter profile link could not be added by rel="me". Thanks for your hint. https://indiewebify.me/validate-rel-me/

↩️ You don't, any more. Sadly, twitter started to use their https://t.co linking on the profile pages as well, so even if it was a rel-me, it wouldn't be linking to any site, just https://t.co.

Ruxton, as a small point of order, that Smashing Magazine post was written by a community member who "syndicated" the article to the magazine for the extra reach. Her sit supports the spec IIRC. Sadly she doesn't have control over the site to have them support it. I remember trying to talk A List Apart into supporting Webmention when I wrote about it there; I think they're still considering it, but it obviously requires more work on
#
[chrisaldrich]
their part than just publishing good content. 🙂
#
[chrisaldrich]
And generally, Smashing Magazine is posting content on their own site, so they're really Indie enough with just that.

I watched The Social Dilemma last night. If anyone is curious why STS scholars could be so upset with a documentary that at its core espouses an agreeable and important critique of social media, here's a thread. 1/11

gwg, aaronpk, tantek, did one of you get a photo for the microformats session for the newsletter?
#
aaronpk
oh! i think i have one?
#
aaronpk
wait no
#
aaronpk
that was GWG
#
[chrisaldrich]
I've tweaked the DoOO session again so it shouldn't show the featured photo....
#
[chrisaldrich]
there were two, a normal one and a "close up" one as I recall...
#
aaronpk
hm maybe i shouldn't use featured photos for the newsletter
#
aaronpk
deleting cover image from HWC for now
#
Loqi
[Event Updated] aaronparecki.com updated "Sep 16, 2020 6:30pm Homebrew Website Club West Coast" changed cover_image https://events.indieweb.org/event/146/history/598/diff
#
aaronpk
the newsletter doesn't look like it's pulling the featured photot at all, how did that HWC cover image make it in there?
#
aaronpk
is confused
#
[chrisaldrich]
aaronpk, I just changed it, it was pulling the HWC logo from the post I made.
#
[chrisaldrich]
I just uploaded the correct photo and used a <data> element to make my post with a featured image turn into an rsvp and remove the photo. I don't think it had regenerated.
#
aaronpk
then whoops i shouldn't have removed the cover image :)
#
aaronpk
oh well
#
[chrisaldrich]
it's alright....

The reason careless errors like this are important is because, as science and technology scholars teach us, tech is not created in a social vacuum. It is built within, and often reifies, power structures. By ignoring that lesson, we keep those power structures in place https://twitter.com/pessimistsarc/status/1306011195212783618
