@megarush1024
OK #WordPress #a11y and #Indieweb, I have an official announcement. John @whiskeydragon1 and I are getting married on June 19 2021. There’ll be something virtual for those who can’t make it, and we’re still trying to figure out accessible wedding… https://www.arush.io/archives/100590/2020/10/19/22/30/

↩️ The whole idea behind indieweb Is that u initiate the conversation on your own website and then it gets syndicated out to social media silos & from other websites like the old days of BBS. I could make a reply to in my comment section and it would get published on your website

#
@DenverProphitJr
↩️ The difference being, your comments come from your website and are distributed out to targets and syndication sources like twitter. Read https://indieweb.org/ when you have the chance.

have we thought of trying out discord for hwcs and maybe also bridge it?
#
petermolnar
I'm seeing a lot of newish projects using it instead of, say, slack
#
petermolnar
to be frank, it's a LOT nicer than slack for chat (for non-irc people), but I'm yet to try the video part of it

jacky
petermolnar: you mean like the video rooms?
#
jacky
hmm I don't know if they're any different than Zoom
#
jacky
definitely would have higher levels of permissions
#
aaronpk
what i don't like about discord is that they essentially gamify the instance management
#
aaronpk
so you have to get a certain number of users on it before you unlock features and such
#
jacky
me to peloton tbh
#
aaronpk
doesn't seem very indieweb friendly
#
aaronpk
at least slack and zoom are tools an organization can pay for to get some list of known features
#
jacky
I don't even think a solid video bridge could be implemented too :(
#
jacky
I do like how Discord is pretty friendly around self control for A/V
#
jacky
like it feels more okay to be video-off there than in Zoom
#
jacky
but that might be cultural tbh

fair point, I didn't know about the gamification part; that's certainly not ideal.

things I like about the platform IIW is using for the event:
#
aaronpk
the "home" screen has a clear list of all the breakout spaces with links to join the zoom room for each
#
aaronpk
each also shows the faces of people who are "in" the breakout room so you can see at a glance the activity
#
aaronpk
there's a dedicated "coffee cart" and "snack table" space (mimicking the real-world event that has these) which are for general hangouts and meeting people
#
[schmarty]
aaronpk: ooh, are the breakout room "in" lists updated automatically??
#
aaronpk
sorta yeah, there seem to be two parts to it
#
aaronpk
if you click on one your face appears automatically, but you're not really "in" it other than saying you're there. if you then join the zoom video it adds a little video icon next to your face

interesting. looking forward to hear more about how that works.

From #indieweb-chat, this seems like an exceptionally bad idea, due to lack of internet access (nevermind inability to escape infectious diseases), and I certainly wouldn't recommend an IndieWebCruise, however perhaps the "Offline Camp" crowd could make good use of the opportunity: https://news.yahoo.com/unused-carnival-cruise-ship-could-203758641.html (or maybe IIW could use it to try to figure out how to do identity without internet access)
#
[tantek]
(I've been on a couple of these cruises, so I can answer quite a few questions about the experience, limitations, etc. Overall both were quite positive and fun, though I don't think I'll do another due to the contagion vulns)
