curious, why no bridge to discord?
#
jacky
lahacker: I think there was one
#
GWG
lahacker: There was, but it was a Discord bridge from the Matrix bridge I think
#
GWG
And no one used it, it just brought in random names
#
aaronpk
It had a kind of critical flaw that it joined every discord member into the room, and it was a discord for a bunch of communities too, so it ended up making our freenode user counts look extremely high so we're were a huge spam target
#
aaronpk
and in discord you don't get to choose which channels you're in, you're just in all of them
#
GWG
aaronpk: The Slack bridge only shows people in sometimes. What are the criteria for that?
#
jacky
that's a slack thing IIRC
#
jacky
like based on who's away or not
#
jacky
remembers this faintly from having to write a bot once
#
jacky
actually, it states that in the quit message
#
GWG
I'm wondering if there might be a similar way to do that in theory for Discord
#
GWG
Not volunteering to write it. Just pondering

It's a choice I made for the bridge, to drop nicks with no activity for some time

From my view of it rotanarotana is taking a positive view of it and encouraging an IndieWeb perspective. I'm not so sure that others outside of us may be reading it with the more critical eyes we may be.

↩️ Rotana Ty, I'm curious if you've tried using any of the IndieWeb plugin suite for WordPress? Webmention/Semantic Linkback plugins for site-to-site notifications/conversation or Micropub plugin and clients for making posting simpler? (http://boffosocko.com/2021/02/12/55786995/)

↩️ Love to find month old threads about other platforms, but this all checks out. Coming from the same fedi place just b4 Mastodon blew out GNUSoc/Quitter in popularity, I can confirm these statements. Looking back, one could even extend this to earlier iterations like "IndieWeb".

↩️ And the tragic thing is, most of these sites are invisible even when discussing disappearing websites. IndieWeb's list, for example, is overwhelmingly focused on "services", which draw more attention when they're closed because users notice their accounts getting locked.

↩️ If you are talking about the list at https://indieweb.org/site-deaths, it does specifically refer to "content hosting sites" not the individual sites I think you are lamenting. No-one could keep track of all of those, although there is http://archive.org in a pinch.

what is alt text?
#

alt is a required attribute of the <img> element and should be provided in any use of images on indieweb pages from photo posts to featured and other images in articles https://indieweb.org/alt_text

Some bullshit went down last night that really reaffirms my stance that the fediverse and Mastodon is mostly a model of what to not do at this point.
